Considering how stripped back and bare bones his setup and approach in the Stripes was, he got some pretty damn good mileage with it I’d say. He’s a master of a less is more philosophy, and playing what serves the song. He can’t be like Petrucci or Vai, but he doesn’t strive to be. Unlike a lot of those guitarists that are objectively more skilled than him that he beats out on those stupid lists, he can actually write a song with what he does on the instrument that sticks with people decades later. Give credit where credit is due, he strives in the areas he’s known for, for better or worse lol

John's raking technique which he uses during soloing is kind of difficult to get on with. Even in this video in Who did you think I was it was demonstrated to perfection without any string buzzing. It will be good if you do some lesson on that technique.

Im plugged into a Bugera V22 -not cause I like it, I just didn't have the budget to get a better amp back at the day :/ But the secret to this tone is a Route 66 (compressor and overdrive pedal) by truetone, and spring reverb from the Strymon BlueSky. These 2 pedals with a neck pickup on a strat will make any guitar sound good! Check out my SRV video, I used the Route 66 on that one too - amazing pedal
