Well that's an interesting way of building the porch roof. I love building. Built my place over 100,000 square feet of buildings and follow building channels. Everything I've ever seen is built upon the existing roof-like the back porch was done. It's your build..Though why you want to build in such an overly involved manner when building upon the existing roof both ties into the existing roof and is lightening fast, I don't understand....
Whatever gutters you decide on please do not get the leaf guard. They cause so much water damage and do not work. Also when you get a ice storm it creates a dam and the water just pours over the edge when it melts instead of going in the gutter. They are a expensive product that doesn’t work
Gary, when you cut the top of that tall post while hanging off of it, it made me think of the old cartoon character sawing off a beam while sitting on it only to realize too late that he was sitting on the wrong side of the beam, hee! Like the Wiley Coyote. You managed to do it safely, but I couldn’t help but cringe.
I remember when we put up gutters , was 7 yrs old at the time , gutters were galvanized seamless and lasted over 30 yrs and were still in good shape when we took them off the garage ,garage was 45 foot long , we could park 3 1/2 big cars if we wanted to but my dad a shop in back , anywhere I digress, gutters can be over sold to make u think you need to fancy when good old galvanized works great and last a long long time ..... place is coming along great. ..... jk>> You could put up a heavy beam and pull engines with that stacked 2x's you got there
Hi Mel and Gary, I just watched Anne of All Trades TH-cam video - Please Don't Get a Goat. I thought Anne might answer your questions about what happened to Ellie May. She makes it sound totally normal to lose a goat for whatever reason it might turn out to be. With 10 years of experience, she explains some very good information. She said it took two years to train her guardian dogs. She raises goats and milks hers, so she knows a lot about it. I hope you watch her channel after this video. She has great gardening tips too. Plus she is a bit of a character. I find her entertaining. Enjoy!
Quelle agréable surprise d'avoir la traduction verbale en français, c'est plus simple car cela nous permet de suivre ce que fait Gary en écoutant. BRAVO. What a pleasant surprise to have the verbal translation in French, it's easier because it allows us to follow what Gary does by listening. WELL DONE.
That wood piece drill 4 holes though it into the post and put wood dials into them and glue and page your added piece. So your screws would go though with no problems.
Hey Gary, morning coffee watching you work. I can’t help myself writing comments but then deleting as I continue to watch as you sort out the challenge. The idea that came to mind was to suggest that the short pole would have been way stronger if you took it down, unscrewed the boards, then staggered them to the length that you needed, to insert filler blocks, glue and nail then stand it back in place. Yep, too late but something for later for Justin, Justin case you get into this position again in any future build. When I had this job to do I watched builders doing the same job, just to see their method. When I built in Victoria, Australia, I didn’t use any sheet board under the roofing iron. The iron was screwed to timber battens. I had to make an intersecting joint, a valley gutter. It was not easy for me as I too was building the first time, but got there eventually. Like you racing against the rain, tarp on and tarp off quite a few times. G’day Mel and kids. Stay safe and take care.
You're porch roof is looking great Gary. I hope you get that elusive deer you're hunting for. The best of luck to you! Hi Mel. I know you're busy indoors with the kids. ❤
Good luck Gary. Looking good so excited to watch what happens. Wishing you all a blessed Thanksgiving. Enjoy the day. Love you all from Cape Cod. Mel give your mom my love. Miss her channel. Thank you❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🇺🇸
hi there slr. i have a question (it may be a stupied one) you have 2 extra metal thing that you used for the beams, so here is my question, cant you use them to hold the beams togheter on the upper part also? in short, you take the metal thing and turn it up side down and mount it on the top then screw the planks on to the metal thing. hope you get what i mean, have a great day! :)
Happy Thanksgiving SLR 🦃🤩🥰🍗😍 Gary, hope your trip to the Deer Blind was Successful 😉 It looked like just the right kind of day for you to get a Big One !!! Until the next one 😉💞🇺🇸
Gutters are expensive😵💫 I need gutters but no money in the budget for them. Mine are super old. I might just get aluminum paint and repaint them and for the downspouts take them apart caulk the areas that they’re all leaking from putting them back together and hopefully they will work a lot better and look nicer. Right now they have that gray pitting look to them.
LOL GARRY I LOVE YOU BROTHER, BUT MAN I WISH I WOULD HAVE SEEN SOONER. THE BEAM SHOULD HAVE GONE UNDER THE DOUBLE TOP PLATE IN ORDER TO MAKE THE ROOFLINES MATCH.
It's called cantilever ,often done with bow windows and porches! ❤❤great job ,just thought I would let you know the name ,I might have spell it wrong old women here 77
I wasn't going to comment but felt it might save you some time. The posts should be cut an inch and a half shorter than the thickness of your beams from the double top plate. So if your beams are 2x8 than your post should be 8 3/4 shorter than your walls. Then you can use a bracket on the house walls and the beams can sit on the posts with the double top plate running across the walls all the way to the posts. That way you are not just relying on the nails in the bracket, but also are completely connected to the house itself. Take care and Happy American Thanksgiving
The beam is not going to work in future have to Replace it in 5 to 6 years you could made it last forever you stacked it together like a sandwich in one direction and 5 stack is too big going to add to your weight a 6 by 6 beam could work just fine same size post for were walk out porch having 2 honizontal beams connecting to monster beams I hope Gary doesn’t make them beefy beams just stacked 3 = 2 x4 s will work reasonably well anything bigger would add extra weight to your Roof Top if Gary add a 2x4 to those super beams but not stack in sandwich stack but cap both beams on side would Add extra sturdiness. And you not have to Replace both beams in 5 years it makes the monster beams bigger but it fix the Swaying in the future and make those two super beans, permanent beans just an idea to keep you have to go replace it in the future in the headaches of doing that I’ve been doing stuff like this for years. I’m in my mid 50s. I’ve been working on carpenter stuff and building decks and building the houses and stuff for up to 20 years. I know what I’m talking about dude.
I've sent you a sketch on how to build wall ladders that will make your work easier. They are solid and you don't have to risk your life reaching high points of your building. Being on my fourth house I can really recommend the use of wall ladders. ;-)
Don't let gutter people over sell you. I hope that you are putting a hip roof on that mud room. from experience if you don't within a few years it will leak.
I am not a carpenter, but I did not understand why it was not possible to design this structure from the very beginning and not to sculpt such a monstrosity now 😮
Come on Gary...we all know ypor the Master of all the weird calculations...jost wait until you decide to run this part with the front? or was it the back? man your still rockin it with the content :))
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving! Gary, I appreciate your explanations but have no idea what you’re talking about. 😂 I just can’t picture it. I’m also trying to picture how the gable roof main center beam connects to the main roof of the house but my girl brain ain’t registering 😵💫.
I am sorry but I think your channel is no longer one I want to watch. There was 2 minutes of work and 20 minutes of talk. Yes, I know progress is slow..... However, all Gary did was trim the height of 2 beams. Nor to mention that he risked serious injury doing so. Please, less talk, more action. T.I.A.
@SimpleLifeReclaimed Yes, I listened. There was a lot of information shared about what he was planning. However, I still feel there was too much talking. I'm not trying to offend. It is that, in my personal opinion, there was too much talking and not enough progress/ action.

Hi Gary the mud room build looks really good, you’re doing an excellent job. Have a Happy Thanksgiving from Southern Ontario 🇨🇦
OK, you're not Spider-Man. Please get the bigger ladder. It will be stronger for the house and the porch.
I think CRC are borrowing Gary's big ladder to put the iron on the roof of their storage room build.

Are you going to come off the pick of the roof with the top beam, and go to the front beam over the stairs?
Are you going to put a tank in to catch the rainwater once you put up the gutters on the house?
