I fell in love with this piece when I heard it back in the 1970s, and I was one of the pianists in a performance of it. Loved it when I heard it almost 40 years ago, loved it when I performed it and I still love it!
Mood music of the ultimate power. Saw this performed at New England Conservatory a few years ago, the overtones blended over each other so much that I thought I was hearing trumpets! No lie. It was intergalactic.
I like this for lots of reasons. It is an accomplishment in discipline and precision. The tempo is frantic, but somehow relaxing. My mind doesn't wander and I'm not bored. The attraction is uncomplicated. I'm better for the listening and that is all one can expect from music.
Wow, the first time I "really" listened to this piece (on a really old iPod I had) was actually on a plane, staring at the clouds and fields through the window. I remember just siting still and silent through the whole trip after the recording ended. Seeing this video gave me quite some chills... Hehe
Often play this recording in middle of the night with my ear-phones on, with a few glasses of chilled, Pinot Grigio. My best wishes whoever reads this. XX
I've become a fan of Reich through Reich Remixed. Impressions of pieces interpreted by other artists. I really love this interpretation, masterfully done, tempo is perfect. The one Reich piece I can't skip through, I never get bored. Bravo!
Simply awsome!! Those cords, beautifull sound, I dreamed away. I've played Reich in the past, great composer of this minimal music. Thanks for posting!
I put this exact recording on my iPod, opened up iTunes, played this, and then played the TH-cam recording at the same time. Results? 12 PIANOS. It's absolutely great
.... I totally agree ... buts it is more than that playing it this way, the harmony is so strong and present nearly always. The melody tries to take you away but the harmony and rhythm are constant.
Omg I've just realized that you're the one with that awesome soundcloud account, who's playing mostly perfect the pieces of Arvo Pärt! I liked Six Pianos here and other pieces on soundcloud, but now I see that you're one musician. Thank you so much for sharing your talent!
Nice interpretation. You obviously hear the train in this piece - as you hear the horse in Chopin, Beethoven and so many classical pieces. So it's funny to use pictures taken from an airplane! Yet this describes well the "flying effect" that this train music nevertheless has.
Simply awsome!! Those cords, beautifull sound, I dreamed away. I've played Reich in the past, great composer of this minimal music. Thanks for posting! A persussion fan! (Wiebe)
Hey! This recording is MUCH better than the one by Steve Reich Enemble itself, which accompanied me since I got the record in 1972 (?) as a wish from my parents for christmas. The arrangement and development of the pattern is much clearer. Thank You Mr VanVeen!
For the ones who have doubts about the percussive touch, there's also a version with Steinways (?) here on youtube - "Steve Reich: Six Pianos.", but unfortunately it sounds like a hand wound band organ. I prefer this rendition because this is how it's ment to be imho.
Amazing work, I thought I had heard all SR had to offer this is really something else! thanks for sharing uploader! Minimalism is maximal for me... cheers!
Totally different to the "original version", but very, very "own fashioned" aaand...may I say that? .... Soumetime better than the original!! A very own, but brilliant sound-style!! This is a "must" to hear it! Subbed You immediately, Jeroen!! Thanks for this fantastic upload!! Best regards from Germany, Volker :)
Idk why every other recording of this piece is terrible besides this one. This one sounds like the way reich would have wanted it to be played. Please always keep this version up.
There is no such thing as a "perfect tuning". Read the literature guys. Sounds from 2 instruments playing the same note (as in frequency) will always be slightly "off". Tuners can only try tog get the "variation" as close to nothing. There will always be a shift pitch. And besides that...... if you are focussing on such minor detals you are missing the point of this work.
Have you listened to Philip Glass' earlier works (like Two Pages, Music in Similar Motion, Music in Contrary Motion or Music in Twelve Parts)? I find those just as original as Steve Reich's pieces.
Silly question - is this an actual composition? Or, is this an arrangement of Reich's 'Six Marimbas'? I can't seem to find the score/rights for this piece anywhere, and I'd would love to perform it with some of my students. Thanks for the help!
Actually I believe "Six Marimbas" was transcribed from "Six Pianos." This is just a more recent recording. I too would like to find a score. If you do, I'm sure you wouldn't have to deal with rights and permissions if you're limiting score reproductions and performances among your students. Also, I would love to purchase a copy of this recording, but I couldn't find it anywhere on the artist's website.
Within only the first few minutes, indeed, I feel the mental increase necessary to even solve the issue of world hunger, and the bickering world leaders. These repeating notes shall solve all of life's problems with one simple listen.
I wonder what a Jazz version of this may sound like. What about a version with various strange synthesizers (from clavinet to squelchy noises)? Someone should make those.
I fell in love with this piece when I heard it back in the 1970s, and I was one of the pianists in a performance of it. Loved it when I heard it almost 40 years ago, loved it when I performed it and I still love it!
Probably the best interpretation of this piece I've ever heard.
I prefer this version. The mics are closer and there's more attack. It's addicting, can't stop listening...
;)
Couldn’t stand listening to anything but this for a couple years straight !
the staccato attack on this version is quite nice indeed
Still now I feel this.
It's like a plunge into refreshing cold water.
Fabulous performance. Can humans really play so precisely ? And very good sound quality.
Mood music of the ultimate power. Saw this performed at New England Conservatory a few years ago, the overtones blended over each other so much that I thought I was hearing trumpets! No lie. It was intergalactic.
I think Reich calls those 'resultant patterns", or someone does. It sounds almost like a choir of soft voices that are just there in the background
And five years later.. this is still a special piece.
And even in 2020 during the pandemic... Timeless.
@@tedpiano even now

This is my favorite recording for the piano version thus far. Very energetic, yet hypnotic. Classic Reich.
Astoundingly beautiful. More pieces of music should be made like this. Amazing work
Wow, the first time I "really" listened to this piece (on a really old iPod I had) was actually on a plane, staring at the clouds and fields through the window. Beautiful , very relaxing and hypnotic
An excellent piece and performance.
Often play this recording in middle of the night with my ear-phones on, with a few glasses of chilled, Pinot Grigio. My best wishes whoever reads this. XX
awesome. its rare to find minimalism where i am in any shape or form let alone those who appreciate it, this is certainly an instant fav!
I've become a fan of Reich through Reich Remixed. Impressions of pieces interpreted by other artists. I really love this interpretation, masterfully done, tempo is perfect. The one Reich piece I can't skip through, I never get bored. Bravo!
I've also have this Steve Reich re-mix, love the track: Eight Lines.
Hank Hammings Reich Re-mix, how about track : Eight lines, I just love it. I live in U.K.
Peace to all !!
Such brilliant piano music. It will never get old.
Simply awsome!!
Those cords, beautifull sound, I dreamed away.
I've played Reich in the past, great composer of this minimal music.
Thanks for posting!
This is pretty addicting. I couldn't bring myself to pause it. Especially the previously one I just listened to with six marimbas.
Music is Art, and Steve Reich is a Great Artist.
Such a unique turn of phase.
I agree, often listen late at night this music through my earphones, gives good feeling. I live Bristol UK love to hear from you.
.
Steve reich, génie incontestable, qui vous transporte dans une autre dimention...

The pictures fit this piece perfectly.

I'd never heard of Simeon ten Holt or Canto Ostinato before. Thanks for mentioning it. It's an amazing work!
Hoorde het voor het eerst in de 1970's het sloeg me plat en dat doet het nog!
I much prefer this staccato way of playing to the other recordings. Sounds great.
I totally agree.
.... I totally agree ... buts it is more than that playing it this way, the harmony is so strong and present nearly always. The melody tries to take you away but the harmony and rhythm are constant.
My absolutely favourite piece !!! :-)
I love it so much !
Love it so much! I have already loved their ARGO albums. Especially compositions like LINE, 16 and Which ever way your nose bends by Simon Rackham
I would agree with you, this piece is a lot more evocative, and never lets up.
Makes me want dance all around my home.
Cette version est excellente.

You're welcome!
Very beautiful and peaceful
Please upload the whole piece :)

Playing two copies of this song in tandem with two second latency is pretty novel. I recommend trying it.

Great composer,piano's heaven !! He's the master.
Simply awsome!!

Thank You Mr VanVeen!
Thank you for that idea, I did it with ten tabs, at first all in sync, then out of sync, for some, absolutely gorgeous.
For the ones who have doubts about the percussive touch, there's also a version with Steinways (?) here on youtube - "Steve Reich: Six Pianos.", but unfortunately it sounds like a hand wound band organ. I prefer this rendition because this is how it's ment to be imho.
I found the album and the track on spotify, but it's unplayable, grayed out. What a shame, I love this version.
thanks a lot! i even opened three copies and it's still awesome.!
(music for 18 musicians ;-)
very soothing.... addictive!!!!!
@amistrymister I really think this and the brilliant dynamics make this the best version of 6 pianos I have heard!
Is there anywhere I can get this particular recording please author?
Perfect video to complement this sonar landscape.
He actually got a point in that SR's pieces are usually more intensive and have more information.
Don't you just LOVE IT.
i want to listen to this forever
Reminds me Tim Hecker's "Virginal I" sort of eerie how close it is. this is definitely different as hell though
Andrew Zetek Damn dude I thought the same thing!
+Thanatos probably a reference to the piece
+Stuart Campbell give me a break
Where were these pictures taken?? Sublime performance by the way!
God I wish I could find this exact recording on a music streaming platform. It used to be on Spotify years ago but one day it suddenly got pulled.
Excellent. Sadly it seems to not been fully recorded, the end is missing. Has anyone an idea where to buy the complete piece?
Fantastic version, i like the staccato instead of legato
Amazing work, I thought I had heard all SR had to offer this is really something else! thanks for sharing uploader!
Minimalism is maximal for me... cheers!
You do realize that the bolero was not intended too seriously. Ravel himself said that it contained "no music" or to the effect of that.
2022, timeless ✨️
aaaaah so good!
Best regards from Germany,

Gorgeous video, btw! :-)))
This is amazing!
This is seriously addictive.
This is exhilarating!
I like that a lot.
best composer alive
... завораживает !!...
This is trance inducing.
This music is completely captivating. It would be absolutely brilliant in the game I'm developing. Wish I'd composed it! :(
funky!
Idk why every other recording of this piece is terrible besides this one. This one sounds like the way reich would have wanted it to be played. Please always keep this version up.
lovely, but I will never understand why people upload cut-off sound files to youtube.

+egid blezer no reason it cant be pointed out
exactly. even in an orchestra, every violin is slightly off tune, but thats what makes the strings sound luscious
the deutschgrammafon version is my favourite recording, but this is still a great and subtle version!
Super

I have found the score to Marimbas - would you like a link?
It gets cut off. Why? Copyright reasons?
Within only the first few minutes, indeed, I feel the mental increase necessary to even solve the issue of world hunger, and the bickering world leaders. These repeating notes shall solve all of life's problems with one simple listen.
@dracainbloodly So why is it faster? I listened to it on CD just the other day.
hello? what is this ending?
I like this one with six marimbas.
you should try Simeon ten Holt, speaking about Ostinato; Canto Ostinato
Did it get cutoff early at the end?
That simply note at 8:17.
@ishouldplayzelda To you, no doubt - to me the faster version sounds wrong. Maybe it depends on which version you first hear.
Took that long?
Epic!
Good
I wonder what a Jazz version of this may sound like. What about a version with various strange synthesizers (from clavinet to squelchy noises)? Someone should make those.
to me THIS is the jazz version...
@@maurotedeschi5001 Well, this is actually classical not jazz
genial

yuuuuuUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A hundred rays of sunlight falling on a thousand spiderwebs, and picking up the reflections of a million water droplets.
