Her shovel stuck into the earth with a wet shluck. The rain pitter-pattered against her back as she tossed the soil to the side. The sack to the left of the rest of the garden quivered and she smiled.
"You wouldn't listen," she scolded. "You wouldn't listen to him and now I have to deal with you. All you had to do-" she stopped to dig another mound of dirt up before continuing. "-all you had to do was obey."
The thing in the bag made a sound like a fox's squeal. Rebecca kicked it and the squeal turned to a whimper.
"You can scream all you want. No one's coming to help you." She shoveled more dirt. The hole was nearly three feet deep now.
"...lak...lak-ird...leas..."
She scoffed and continued to shovel. "He won't help you. I told you. You abandoned him and this is what you get. Don't waste what breath you have left."
The bag trembled with loud racking sobs that were barely drowned out by the howling wind.
She pushed her wet hair out of her eyes and opened her mouth to drink the fresh rainwater from the clouds above. She had set the shovel aside. "I am giving you mercy. I'd kill you myself but this is not up to me." She knelt down besides the struggling bag before whispering, "You're lucky."
She unzipped the bag, revealing someone bound by chains and bleeding from the mouth. The body was so beaten and broken that there was no way to tell if it was male or female. "...leas...we-ecka, leas, am hawrry..." The thing groaned.
Rebecca grabbed it by the chin and pulled it closer. It grunted as she forced its mouth open.
Its tongue was severed two ways, at the frenulum and half way across the back. It was barely attached and bled profusely. She knew they felt their own blood trickle down their throat as she held their head.
"I am done with you." She sneered and let the body crumple into the hole.
The rain was getting heavier now. Rebecca sighed and stood, picking up the shovel once more. She held her head high as she slowly moved the dirt back to its original place. "You are scum. You belong beneath all who are holier than you. You belong under us." She murmured as she packed the dirt tightly. As she laid the shovel to rest again, she noticed something that made her smile widen.
A white clump of something that looked at first like mushrooms sat where nothing had previously been.
She had failed to fully bury the person's hand. It was sticking just inches above the soil, desperately clawing at the mud around it.
"You'll be a perfect reminder for those who think they are brave like you."
The hand slowed to a crawl and the noise from the grave eventually ceased. It was only now Rebecca turned back to the house and let out a shocked little gasp.
"Mom?"
