  • The Kinslayings of the First Age of Middle-earth were tragic events in Tolkien’s The Silmarillion, however, they were important events that shaped the world of the Elves. Thank you all so much for watching, let me know your thoughts on the three Kinslayings in the comments below. As always, a great thanks to the online artists whose visual works made this video possible! If you are one of the artists, please let me know and I will post your name and a link to your work in this description!

    • @timonsolus
      @timonsolus 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Luthien was already very powerful for an Elf, being the daughter of Melian the Maia, and possession of the Silmaril would have greatly increased her powers. She would have been at least as powerful as Galadriel later became, perhaps almost as powerful as Melian herself.
      Perhaps that made her too great a foe for the sons of Fëanor to overcome, and they had to wait.

    • @JoshMorgantheNinja

      I could imagine that had the sons of Feänor been stupid enough to attack Luthien and Beren for possessing the Silmaril, I think that Luthien would have yeeted them like how Galadriel yeeted that Orc that was hurting Gandalf in the extended edition of the Battle of the Five Armies movie.

    I can't believe they help commit genocide on their own people for three rocks.
    Morgoth was probably elated to see the sons of feanor slaughtering other elves for the silmarils cuz then he realized that's less work he has to do on his part

    • @aleclightwood721
      @aleclightwood721 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      i think that was his goal in the first place. considering it was him who corrupted Feanor into thinking the valar wanted the silmarils for themselves. and he did a very good job at separating the elves from the valar, and elves from their own kin.

      @Glenn Krenz the Silmarils were not worth the bloodshed that was spilled for their sake. "How did it come to this??.......the days have come down in the west....how did it come to this?"
    It was a tragic time to be certain, but I feel that Tolkien put these tragedies in the tales to show the hubris and flaws of the elves; which even tho they were immortal and "divine" they were just as flawed and imperfect as the rest of creation in the world.
    I know I always saw the elves as perfect, strong, and above evil. These occurrences always remind me otherwise 💔

  • @snehilsrivastava6249

    People forget that Fëanor's rebellion and subsequent kinslaying (1st) was not just to recover the Silmarils. It was also to avenge the death of his father. Even Tolkien said that his father was dearer to him than the Silmarils. Morgoth made Fëanor an orphan, the first orphan in Valinor and the Valar (in Fëanor's mind) were unwilling to do anything. So he decided to take matters into his own hand. This is no way justifies the 1st kinslaying but the Silmarils were not the only reason. Fëanor wanted to avenge his father.

    • @akuntansibersamaratna2166
      @akuntansibersamaratna2166 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree. Another thing that also concerns me is why the Valar forbid the Noldor to go East. Forgive me if I am mistaken since it has been a long time since I read the Simarillion, I just can't bring myself to re-read some parts of it T_T.
      However, I thought the Elves came West by invitation. They wake up under the stars in Beleriand. If only the Valar did their job properly with containing Morgoth, the elves might decided to stay instead of going to Valinor. I thought, the Valar can advise the Noldor against chasing Morgoth, telling them how foolish it is, but the final choice should remain in their hand. The Teleri refused to lend their ships to the Noldor since they do not have the Valar's blessing. Adding fuel to fire, as you said Feanor was in warpath, then you have a kinslaying (T_T). I may be mistaken though, I can not bring myself to re-read the Oath, the kinslayings, and the Battle of Unnumbered Tears, my heart can not bear reading them.

      Manwë released Melkor from bondage in the Halls of Mandos after 3,000 years, and allowed him to walk freely in Valinor, believing that Melkor was truly repentant and had freed himself from evil.
      Melkor was skilled in the crafts of Aulë that the Noldor wished to learn, and he befriended them, and spoke many lies to them carefully hidden among fair words, and many of the Noldor became corrupted, especially Fëanor.
      Thus the root of the Kinslaying lies with Melkor, although the pride of the Noldor certainly puts them at fault.

    We only see two of the sons of fan or show any kind of remorse for the terrible things they did. Technically it was more of just maeglor himself. He orphaned dior's children and grandchildren and then adopted elrond and elros out of guilt. And where he could redeem himself he chose to soiled himself further by continuing to fulfill the oath. Cuz apparently breaking oath off was that taboo.

    Feanor is a complicated guy, he is not good but he is not dad and this is why he is one of my favorite characters, he is a complicated guy who borne without a mother, who was killed giving birth to him and he probably feels guilty about it, the father that he loves marry another woman has other children and with that, he feels jealousy he feels alone and ended up building anger, resentment inside his fire spirit and with that, he not only brings destruction to those around him but to himself.
    I understand people do not like him but I ask that you try to understand him, even if you don't agree with his actions.

    I have a feeling that after the Nirnaeth Arnoediad Maedhros was kind of broken and when news came to him and his brothers of the Silmaril in Doriath he just didn't care much to make decisions as leader of the house and left it up to the others to decide and thus Celegorm and Curufin ended up leading the slaughter with Maedhros passively following in the background and it was at the end when he heard about the children and probably witnessed some of his brothers' deaths that he snapped out of his stupor and went to look for them. As for the third kinslaying I like to think that at this point Maedhros was tired and now looked upon by the elves as a monster and a murderer and saw no reason to prove them wrong anymore so when he heard of the Silmaril in Elwing's hand and she refused to give it up he just did what he thought he had to do to end this which of course didn't go as planned and more innocent people were senslesly killed:(

    It's a great intro to the whole world of Middle Earth. In case Faenor did not have this initial rash decision, resulting in genocide, they would have wiped the floor with Morgoth as currently presented, and there would be no LOTR. Elves suffering quietly for millennia due to their own misdeeds, Morgoth must have been quite pleased with the outcome.

    I know it's a serious video but just the fact that elves having weapons in Aman, in the Years of the Trees seems a bit odd, especially from the Falmari. While I can guess the years by the shores of Cuiviénen saw some need to craft bows and spears to hunt and defend against the "Great Beasts" that Orome hunted, I can't imagine them keeping that tradition, especially after 3 ages in Aman. I imagine the Falmari only having fishing spears, boat hooks and other tools of craft that can be used to fight, maybe bows if hunting sea birds was a thing. As for the Noldor it seems even funnier, Aule looks at the Noldor making swords and armour and not getting concerned a little. Looking at Feanor confronting his half brother at the feast in full armour and a sword, I always assumed was a big deal because Feanor secretly creating armour and a weapon in Aman was so shocking to everyone, but that all the Noldor had made weapons and armour and had them all ready even before the Darkening of Valinor and the Oath.

    • @Crafty_Spirit
      @Crafty_Spirit 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good point! I assume that Feanor created a stock of armour and weaponry while he was under Melkor's influence. Probably he told himself: "I forge these swords to vent off, I won't actually use them, this is my me-time and hobby only..."

    • @melkhiordarkfell4354
      @melkhiordarkfell4354 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Crafty_Spirit Yeah, I know in some notes it says that Feanor made some armour and weapons in secret before confronting Fingolfin but yeah doesn't quite accord for a fully armed Feanorian faction at the time of the Kinslaying or most importantly the Battle under the Stars when they crossed the sea into Middle Earth. And again, how did the Falmari even fight assuming they had only fishing and sailing tools.

    • @Crafty_Spirit
      @Crafty_Spirit 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@melkhiordarkfell4354 Hey :-) I found a more satisfying answer while reading the Silmarillion. In chapter VII of my print it is clearly stated that several Noldor independently of each other forged weapons.
      It is quite perfidious: once they felt pride and wrath, Melkor spoke to them of weapons, but only to isolated persons or small groups - while the Noldor began to show up publically with shields that depict their houses (and their growing egos), everyone assumed to be the only person creating and hording weapons. Feanor's "army" was therefore not equipped with a standard set, but individual creations.
      Where the Teleri received their weapons from I don't know but perhaps they defended themselves with hunting and kitchen tools like you suggested. Remember that the Teleri were the most numerous initially (and perhaps still after the sunderings en route), so this fight could have been a small, well-armed group butchering a larger, ill-equipped one.

    These are of course very tragic and beautiful stories, but except for the storytellers perspective, is there are reason to why the elves take death so seriously?
    When they die, their spirits go to the Halls of Mandos, wait a bit, and are reincarnated. I would have thought that elves should be quite cavalier about death. Sure, it is annoying when a teammate kills you and you have to respawn, but it's more of a "What the hell man?" moment than "You and your bloodline shall be cursed forever and your lives will end in misery!".

    • @ecencronzeton1641
      @ecencronzeton1641 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Anne O'Nymous I believe you're right! But the elves they "killed" in the kinslaying would just respawn anyways, so being barred seems like such a harsh punishment.
      It's like receiving the death sentence for starting a brawl.

    • @Crafty_Spirit
      @Crafty_Spirit 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't think that Mandos cursed them, rather he a) pronounced the Valar's policy ("We will not punish you for this horrible crime, but you are no longer welcome in our lands, and we will ignore your future problems") and b) predicted the effects that the oath would have. Oaths are magic in themselves, there was no need for Namo to curse the Noldor.
      I am currently rereading the Silmarillion and of Namo (Mandos) it says that he proclaims the Valar's consentual will and that he has the strongest faresight of all. I can't rule out a hundred percent that he did not curse the Noldor, but I think not. Tolkien is not very precise on this, it is often hard to distinguish whether great words spoken cause something or just predict something.

    • @Crafty_Spirit
      @Crafty_Spirit 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      By the way, I think Celebrimbor as a descendant of Feanor acted freely in his life, not enslaved by an oath or curse, which also speaks against the idea that Namo cursed the elves...

    • @Crafty_Spirit
      @Crafty_Spirit 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sry one more thing :-) I am not sure, but isn't it the case that the reincarnation system is hardly described. I thought it was an exception as there is only one mentioned specimen and it's even vague (Glorfindel)

    • @ecencronzeton1641
      @ecencronzeton1641 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Crafty_Spirit That the "Doom of the Noldor" is perhaps more of a prediction than a curse is something I hadn't considered, but I think that sounds very reasonable! I will certainly have this in mind, so maybe the punishment isn't quite as harsh after all :)
      I would say that reincarnation for elves is indeed a general thing though.Tolkiengateway lists its source as The History of Middle Earth vol. 10, "Morgoth's Ring". Reading a few sections of that I would say that that it does indeed seem that elves do have their bodies restored eventually. It is of course not written to be as clear cut as a simple respawn timer, but I would maintain that death wouldn't be as big a deal to the elves as it is to mortals.
