My 10 Predictions About the Future of Video Games

- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 7 มิ.ย. 2024
- An older gamer makes predictions about what the video game landscape is going to be like in the future. These predictions are shaped by his past experiences, his autistic way of seeing patterns, his recent experiences in the "online revitalization" of dead multiplayer games, and his recent experiences in the emulator scene. This isn't a Top 10 per se; just a list with 10 things on it.

Come back in 20 years to see how accurate I was.
I don't think that will work out. Even with modern "emulate it all" software like "R.tro.A.ch" we face multiple problems most people are unaware off because their focus is too narrow.
Look at this guy trying to double dip on video views by making us come back in 20 years. Nice try. We're on to you.
I don't plan to live that long
I think things will flatline a bit as educational institutes shift then in 50 years there will be a paradigm shift.
Economics I think will adjust as ways people even on entry levels or living situations change.
Space will become more limited as communal living increases. Technology and entertainment in 200 years will be no more games or entertainment. Instead, it will be simulations and concepts people are invested in like living large digitally.
NINTENDO WILL NEVER BE FREAKING GONE DUDE
I'm sad that physical media is slowly going away
I predict that Nintendo will finally show a trailer for Metroid Prime 4 a single day before the heat death of the universe.
This guy dropping the hottest takes of 1992
My favorite gaming channel on TH-cam. Keep up the great work!
And here I was hoping for some optimistic predictions...
Honestly, this is fascinating. I work in UX Research and this is a lot of food for thought, not only for video games but software delivery in general.
It's nice to see some future predictions that aren't everyone fighting for expired canned goods in an irradiated wasteland.
I think my biggest disagreement is with the idea that games will become so immersive that it'll be like in Jason X. We all believed similar things until the Wii came along... and then we realized that no one really wants to move around while playing games. lol The future of how video games are experienced will have to be both practical and not be something taxing. Even with VR, not many people can have long play sessions with it. Unless younger generations become more used to it, I can't see it working long-term.
Really hope your predictions about emulation comes true, though. Just for the sake of preserving games. I'll always prefer physical, but that is definitely not going to last for much longer, and when all of the discs become too scratched and all disc drives stop working, then what? We need to find a way to keep those games around.
that living in the movie is a cool idea, like a guided tour through the movies setting with events happening as you view them.
This is a very insightful video! I really liked it.
Absolutely loved this video, great work.
Great video, gotta love content that makes you think. A lot of food for thought there.
Great ideas, awesome video :)
I'm a time traveler from 20 years into the future, you were wrong on all of them
No spoilers please. 😁
It breaks my heart but i believe you are right. I've already switched to emulation for all my 8-16bit gaming but i wish i still had the original hardware and games for some of those systems. I did buy a multi cart for my Sega Genesis that has 200 some games on it but im not sure if that's still considered emulation or not. Im so happy that i was born in the generations that had and have the nostalgia for these consoles and games. Thanks for the video
I was just thinking about this yesterday and some of your predictions 👍
Agree with you on the "no more physical media" prediction - it's dying out already.
This is a very fun video. You have some great ideas. For certainly the future of physical media is not looking likely.
I believe in the feasibility’s of most predictions with a big IF. Moving all computational power outside of your home requires a major technological breakthrough in terms of network latency. It’s difficult to provide < 10ms service unless you deploy your service physically in all ISPs which from an infrastructure point of view it’s a financial challenge. With that said, increasing network throughput will definitely continue in the next decades.
ohohoh, that prediction 9, games being movies being games - I can totally see that happening like you describe, but maybe one step further - Imagine being VR style thrown into Alien, watching the movie taking place, scene by scene, «in» the scene, all that stuff happening around you, maybe to an extent interacting with it, or doing missions in mission impossible, or sitting in the car doing the blues brothers car chase in real time, or charging down the plain in ready player one or avengers end game - I can totally see that happen some time in the future now that most sets already are pretty virtual and motion capture is on it’s way to be almost done always to some extent, it won’t be long before motion capture and facial expression capture is as easy as just having some tiny sensors beneath your clothes, and next step having so much movement data and data power that recreating realistic motion will be partly AI (not there just yet, but it will happen) and partly people with creative visions.
You will own nothing and you will love it
This is pretty good. I agree with most of these
What is the data that 80% of games are out of print and impossible to get outside of a secondary market… no way that stuff comes back without a fight for monetary consideration.
Sounds like a bleak future, glad I'll be dead soon after that.
Also, not saying you are wrong, just that, it's depressing.
I imagine the future of gaming to be more virtual reality based, sort of like the game in the movie Jason X where these guys were playing a game in a room and shooting dinosaurs.
Unless you can have the game streamed right into your brain its not gonna happen. VR is very taxing on the body. Its not very comfortable to play long term.
Part of the problem with stadia (and services like it), is that they run into the speed of light barrier... games need to operate at 16ms per frame, and that has real implications - I believe that's around 3000 miles... So if you spend zero time rendering a frame, your server can't be over 3000 miles away, or you will experience lag -- and that's at 60fps, if future games use 120fps, then it's even harder.
Maybe in the future it won't be one giant network, but instead a bunch of local networks.
@@GamingTheSystems1 ya I think totally reasonable for big cities, but would be hard the more rural the area
I don't know if in the "future" we will game on the cloud, simply because nowadays is uber cheap to have decent computers inside, well... everything. And it's cheaper for companies not to rely on their servers to compute. Think youtube or streaming in general: your computer reads data from a data centre, but the processing of that data is done locally.
Is your XEGS white? Don't recall seeing any like it (yet I didn't see many)
I turned those photos into black and white ones.
@@GamingTheSystems1note to self: coffee
Salve , le volevo chiedere se poi ha risolto il problema della consolle watara supervision che non si vedeva lo schermo ma si sentiva l'audio grazie.
E se gentilmente mi può dire come risolvere il problema grazie.
Hey kevin why didn't you use numbered console's playstaion 1 ps2 etc....
I hope most of that doesn't happen. What a sad and disconnected world that would be.
But absolutely think care homes will have more games. I surely will request it when I'm in one 😉
1:30 You're close in saying companies like Nintendo are releasing dev tools for the public with Capcom announcing the REX Engine. I don't understand what motivation companies have to not license and just make it free, If it's just the realization that their AAA scope can't compete with the personable magic of a smaller scope indie release, then they wouldn't even be taking an asset microtransaction model to their free release because individuals would be able to generate unique assets in an efficient time frame.
Gaming the systems! Where are you??? Love your videos
I have a video in the works involving the Vectrex.
@@GamingTheSystems1 Awesome I can’t wait!!
What will happen to GameStop?
I've been thinking about this for a while. There's been mumblings for some time now that so-called 'Triple-A' style games are not sustainable to make, and coinciding with the probable future collapse of global civilization, the game industry may at some point throw in the towel. There will be a 'last generation' that fails...either the hardware doesn't live up to impossible late-stage capitalist standards in terms of sales, the games become prohibitively expensive to develop, or gaming itself becomes a luxury that few can afford. Fully open-source development and a centralized hub for all games produced would be a smart way to get around all of that. Neither Microsoft nor Sony need their consoles to survive. Only Nintendo does, and the industry has been rapidly leaving them behind, despite the persistent quality of their product.
Prediction 4: I think this would be awesome, but would never exist in a legitimate way. I thought the same thing with netflix, everything would eventually be available on it. But the copyright holders are greedy and want more of the pie. The end result, I suspect, would be several big companies with a subscription fees and other ad based game services. Much like the streaming platforms.
Prediction 1: You can already do that, no need to have any programming skills or experiences.
Prediction 2: How boring would it be to bring my apartment to live in a game? Sounds like an AR with extra stepps.
Prediction 3: Agreed. Physical media will be very rare in the upcomming years. Atleast on the western hemisphere where you have fast and cheap internet.
Prediction 4: This is wrong on so many levels. Never gonna happen.
Prediction 5: Same as Prediction 4.
Prediction 6: You are talking about some sort of AR and VR fusuion. That could happen but not the way you describe it.
Prediction 7: Brain input could be possible in very far future.
Prediction 8: We already have that. It is called MMORPG.
Prediction 9: We already have that. We have visual novels in VR, we have games like Detroit become human or the Dark pictures.
Prediction 10: We already have that. Old people play games too you know?
TLDR: You have wild imagination, but you have no clue about how technology work, or how licencing works.
Prediction 4 and 5 is already a thing today but the issue with them is controller support
The only thing I disagree with is that I think company made games will still be around. I think the bigger companies will each launch their own service on Phones, TVs, and PCs. Some will be subscription based, other will be free but you have to pay for specific games or content. It's the reason why Microsoft is making all of these acquisitions.
This was interesting and fun thanks for sharing. I think the life long games are already a thing for example those free to play games like fortnite or those huge triple A tittles from these huge gaming companies all they do is release a new season pass. Movies and Games coming together might happen that's basically what Sony is doing with their first party games. But I hope games don't turn into movie walkthroughs. I love games with amazing long stories but how it is now is different. The retirement home video game predicition is funny imagine 100 + year olds going off due to losing in Mario Party 1. Prediction 6 sounds painful. Now I personally don't like vr the idea sounds great and I'm happy other people have fun with it. But for me I get headaches and yeah. The first two already exists gamers from the past are the game developers of today and there are tools out there for free to start making games not triple A tittles but like indie games. I do hope many gamers who wants to be game developers do find programs and tools to create what they want and bring their dreams to life. Cool video. ^_^
I agree with everything you but 6 and 7.
Not that vr is going away but I think a controller and tv setup will still be the normal stand point.
People work 40+ hours a week when they come home they want to relax and wearing a bulky headset is not for them. Small phone games and apps work great. but hardcore games need a physical controller.
Have normal nerds play dark souls in VR and see how that goes.
But tell me, what happens when one scrappy band of rebels rises up against this future utopia, assisted by their robot dog, sparky?
My major prediction is that in the future we will be able to have sex with any character from any game that we want
And sex with real women will be illegal.
You’re thinking about Sonic?
@@MrMarrekkkLOL 😂
prediction 7 is funny. imagine dying that way and nobody would notice right away.
I dont think life long cames will be a bizarre thing i started playing Super Mario 64 at 4 and plan to play that at 90 and that doesnt have added content lol
If we are all making our own games will we enjoy playing them?
I believe so, because it's still fellow humans making games, same as it always was.
@@GamingTheSystems1 Gameplay matters the most, 99% of video games released are not worth playing
Same would be the case with everyone making their own video games
Only very few would be able to make games worth playing
10/10 I think all of your predictions will happen. The hologram running on a giant accessible network at instant I think will Happen. I have thought this for years. Nothing will be physical and everything will be basically a giant search engine like google but way bigger and more complex (bet less complex in terms of accessibility). I think this also will put into play alot of political and religious issues that I won’t get into here. Humanitarian stuff
I think u right, in future cloude gaming will take all gaming market even now market is shifting to subscription model, companys want more stable income like 10$/m on microsoft ofice that can be easy predicted, even windows 12 will be on subscription model :)
i agree on the one withouth fisical media, and things like google stadia,
I think videogames will become more tangential as overlap occurs between passive and non-passive forms of entertainment and that the particular forms of social media media will be synonymous with www.
Choose your adventure books of the 80s forms of videogame entertainment will become a reality. This means virtual exploration in an nft marketplace, gambling, or something more exciting like Westworld just not to that extreme. It will be worse then better then worse then better as is the case with most things in history unless some sort of catastrophe happens to set the clock back again.
Choose Your Adventure forms of movie entertainment may evolve towards the end of our lifetimes. Beyond that I think consumption forms of entertainment begin to gradually change maybe at first as a theatrical experience then in the home.
I think also moviewise people will make their own content sort of like stage plays but simpler. The idea of greenscreen some utilize for gaming won't grow but something else similar. Capitalism will eventually create certain companies that license out and people will flow to these platforms. Educational institutions will begin utilizing this too.
Sounds like a miserable future to me.😢
I think he speaks truth. I mean .. think about it.
In the future, there will be four classes of humanity: those who are addicted to video games, those who are addicted to drugs, those who are both addicted to drugs and video games, _those who are neither addicted to drugs nor video games._ Caste system.
Who's at the top of that caste? From my experience, not being addicted to things actually tends to make you an outsider. Especially since COVID dialed people's vices up to 11.
prediction nine Just came true or is about to .
Konami just released some interactive show for something to do with silent Hill
What the hell did I just watch lol
What the hell was this? This has got to be the most elementary near future predictions I have ever heard. The novel "Ready Player One" sounds way more realistic than this entire video. But, I did have a good laugh this morning watching this. So, thank you.
LOL. I spoke about the complete transformation of video game culture. What was I supposed to talk about, gaming on Mars?
You look like Joe from Game Sack
Unrealistic predictions for the most part but not saying it's impossible. Last prediction is 100% going to happen.
that sounds bleak as hell. i’d rather die than live with any of this bullshit.
edit: prediction 10 sounds pretty cool though.
I think the collaboration part isn't something to be feared.
All of this is likely to happen, see you in 20 years.
I predict Xbox will drop out of the console market in this decade.
This sounds like videogame communism
I predict that climate change, war,and famine will make gaming a non--issue.
