550 for example is a limbing saw and you really want the snappiest throttle response you can get. The husky 5 series have the transfers outside of the bore into the case which make big case volume. So you want those stuffers in there to get a normal case volume. A limbing saw with bogg in the response is nothing to have. A big cc saw for bucking big trees are a different story.

    Good show Harvey
Crank stuffing vs. volume, and the equation of volumetric ephiceny based on piston volume, lower displacement pluse.
Now just add a tuned pipe to increase the pulse, and we can test those head bolts.
Hope your wife has a full and speedy recovery. God's Speed to you both.

I just finished building my first Farmertec 372 and am satisfied with the build. I did put a Nikasil cylinder and upgraded piston on it and replaced the pto side seal in it but that’s it. It runs great. A lot of it was new to me after building so many Stihl saws. The chain break is not intuitive in its assembly but it is working fine, now, even though it is a little stiff. The one thing I like is it does not beat me to death cranking it, like my MS 460.

Good day Harvey! Yeah, the past is forgotten pretty quickly. Hyundai came out with a variable lift and duration cam linkage, recently. The holy grail of power! I looked at it closely and guess what I saw? I saw the variable stroke geometry of a old shaper. You know, the old shaper machinist tool. Hyundai adapted the linkage to the valve train! Take a look at it some time. And research the metal shapers of a century OR MORE AGO! Yeah, I was one of the first who recognized the relationship. Big fooey for me. 2 + 2. Basic observational gargle. Hope all is well. You look really healthy. Get on out there and plant ...spring and Mother's day is on the way... another thing I recently learned: Mother's Day is the TIME TO PLANT! I agree that more case volume facilitates the potential for more air movement through the saw. Only comes into play with modified saws.
As stated many times engines are just air pumps. The more air you can pump through the engine the more fuel you can add to achieve a bigger boom! As long as the supporting parts can handle the bigger boom the more efficient and power the motor will be. Air volume is always the biggest limiting factor in building power in an internal combustion engine

Interesting stuff Harvey. I remember back in the mid to late 90’s Polaris ran what got dubbed the “can” crank on their 440 race sleds. Basically had a stamped steel can on the outside of the crank wheels to fill them in. Those engines ran awesome and those cranks were highly sought after. Like you say, maybe in a few more years some young engineer will re-invent the crank wheel and they’ll do it again! Ha

Just got into this porting and did my first little build based off a lot of what I learned on your channel.Well after a few 2am nights and all the porting was done I did more reading and figured I messed up and the saw might not run.
Went agaist all the rules for porting a small cc saw but did it accidentally. Anyway long story short it rips really good and I have a new addiction lol.

Hello Harvey, getting ready to tear into my poulan pro, having an issue after 3 years of running it, it died out while in the wood, and wouldn’t restart, I had been running the 50:1 true fuel mix in it, when it died, thinking fuel issues, drained tank and cleared the carb, tune up the saw, (fuel filter, plug, and air filter) tried to restart, it ran for about 3 seconds and shut down, ( put it aside for 2 hrs, cooled off, ) and again the same result. I am thinking of pulling the muffler, and checking the top end, if it needs rebuilding, i will let you know, but what else should i look for or do before I dive in?

@@theironhorse6600 no, i dove into it and found a few things from the main issue, when i pulled apart the recoil starter side I found a random nut stuck to the magnet, and that was only part of the real issue, a vacuum leak! Somehow the “random nut” had vibrated off the right side carb stud, and found its way to the magneto side fly wheel. So i cleaned up the saw from 3 years of use re- assembled and fueled it up, primed it fired it up on the second pull!
It is running better then when new, will post video soon

  • @DaveyBlue32

Hey there Harvey... I was looking at the 357xp cylinder with the one side transfer port nipple that is feed from the cases... I was going to delete that until I convinced myself that I should be adding another one to the other side... I was thinking that I would want a check valve or those two booster ports... so it’s able to maintain it’s back pressure and then started thinking that I’d much rather loose the stuffers for the volume... I haven’t got to that project yet but I’m definitely going to be tapping the second nipple to run the left side port... the volume over the pressure I proved worked as on my 350 cylinders I cut out the material between my upper transfer for the volume over the speed and they run like a much bigger cc engine in the torque department. I’d much rather have a saw with a 12k top speed that can pull chain at 10,500... than a saw that spins 13,500 top rpm’s but then drops to 10k in the cut... personally I don’t like stuffers because I don’t believe in a increase air fuel mixture speed over sure volume... I don’t think the material between the transfer does anything but provide support or stability to the piston ring and restrictions to the fuel charge...??? The water flow with them gone looks a lot better to me?

Excellent video Harvey. I enjoy your videos very much. Crankcase volume is one of my favourite topics on 2 strokes. It would interesting to do a side by side comparison of 2 identical saws. One with crank stuffers and one without. I wonder how much power is lost out the exhaust do to no tuned pipe. Once a saw is cranked right up, how much of that fresh fuel and air mixture is going right out the exhaust? Without a tuned pipe that’s a tough one to deal with

@10:57 : Harvey, IMO, with those CO2 cylinders, you're not really going to make more 'case volume,' you're attempting to make 'transfer resonators,' which in a round-about sort of way you could say that they increase 'case volume,' but not really. I think it may help push more charge into the piston cylinder, though.
Very interesting concept. Are you installing two cylinders per transfer? And if you get the resonator tube and cylinder size calculated and matched for the rpm's you want to optimize, this idea just might be something. You could even have two different resonators that will resonate at different rpm's, expanding your power-band.
I like this idea! But you're pushing for 16,000 rpm?! Ouch! At that rpm, the torque curve has jumped off a cliff long time ago. Will you're proposed reed valves survive or even keep-up at these high frequencies and still be able to breath enough? RC model reed-valved engines do get up there, but they're no-where the displacement as your saw is! The petals will have to be pretty short to be able to stay below their resonating frequencies at your proposed rpm's, and you'll need plenty of petals to keep up with the charge demands.
    Awesome ideas!

A lot needs to be looked at machine been alter do more than was designed to do. That or machine pushed to break point get more parts out. Now a days most companies want more than looking at top quality parts. That or you get a good engineer some companies don't want hear or step outside there normal production. Yes it going cost money in beginning but a lot times it will make a better quality part. That or less machining time. I've seen so many good engineer get fired where I work because what they accomplishes. It sad and some those are the one that share what they learned. If that's true then why would Donnie Walker make full circle cranks with two piece heads and pop up domed pistons for Husqvarna 3120xp hot saws, or why he loved the 357xp because it comes with a full circle crank from the factory, by having a full circle crank it actually allows more fuel into the top end thru the transfers dues to less volume in the crank case, I think you are just thinking about it in the wrong way, it does make it accelerate faster, but just cus it does accelerate faster off the rip doesn't mean it's not Gunna have top end power, or by putting a full circle crank in place of a counter weight style it will impede top end, it doesn't, the new saws with full circle cranks that don't have the top end like u describe is due to the total engine design, not just because it has a full circle crank.

Personally my opinion on stuffers is a little complicated. The 5xx series husky’s does use stuffers on a lot of them. (562, 572, 576, 550, ect)
I don’t think any of those saws are slouches in their weight class and produce power comparable to the older 2-3xx series stuff but with a different powerband. The 357xp and 359 were some examples that showed older saws of similar size utilizing both stuffed and unstuffed cranks. The stuffed 357 was a zippy saw while the 359 was a bit slower but seemed to have more grunt to it. I enjoy watching every one of your videos while I work in my shop and hope to bounce ideas off of you in the future. I’m a lot like you in the fact I love trying different things with my projects. I currently have a 359 crankcase that I’m going to put 357 crank stuffers in and mated with a 272 piston and cylinder. Doing a autotune delete and rebuild on a 562xp. Have a 371 that’s getting a hyway big bore with pop up piston. All kinds of stuff. Keep up the good work and the best to you and barb and the kids

Then why does walker saw shop out of Canada who worked in r&d who built the best husqvarna race saws swear by full circle crank? Its un the fuel air mix, it in the tuning, when it comes to the 357xp why is it a better fater saw than the 359 non exp? Both same saws the 359 no stuffers? Its the design, dint hog out the transfers on full curcle, concentrate on squish and use pop uo pistons to use compresstion and port the exhuast muffler to incrrase flow and focus on the tune, my hyway pop up piston, cylinder moded 357xp hokds its own to any x tork 372xp. Im a production arborist in the feikd coming on 10 years ill tell u stuffers have tgeir place, the 365 special sucks compares to the 357xp and the 357xp blows the 359 out of the water? Why is that?

Every single high performance 2 stroke has stuffers. They make more power with them.
