My hometown of Southend here in the UK had a massive "Pub Scene" back in the '70's with the likes of Eddie and the Hotrods, Dr Feelgood to mention just a couple. Wilko Johnson (ex Dr Feelgood) pops into The Railway Arms every once in a while to jam along with live bands. The Wilko Johnson Band is still going strong with the bassist from Ian Dury & the Blockheads (Norman Watt-Roy - incredible bass player). Going into the '80's and about 5 miles down the road we have Basildon, birth place of Depeche Mode and Yazoo. Also another 80's band, the very excellent Talk Talk, with their bassist Paul Webb and drummer Lee Harris also coming from Southend. Just to give you an idea geographically, we're about 40 miles east of London :) Have a good day guys!

having lived in SF from 80-84, there was a strong musical identity with the popular bands based there. on the radio you could not get away from Huey Lewis, Grateful Dead, Romeo Void, Y&T (to name a few), but the band who cemented the Bay Area association would be the Jefferson Starship ("We Built This City" anyone?). Los Angeles gets associated with the Doors for me thanks to LA Woman. Yellow Magic Orchestra name checks Tokyo. Rush name checks Toronto via the airport YYZ. the Clash, London Calling; the Smiths, "Oh Manchester/so much to answer for"; and 2 bands that named themselves after their hometown, Boston and Chicago; Australian bands don't usually talk too much about where they're from, but the exception is Men at Work who are from a land "Down Under"

The band Kansas evokes the state to me pretty decently. Angra evokes Brazil for me with the tribal rhythms on Holy Land and prog metal leanings that the Iron Maiden fanatics down there probably like. I was so close to being an Athens resident around the time R.E.M. formed. My parents lived there for awhile in the 70’s since my dad went to college at the University of Georgia, but moved back up to NJ a few months before I was born in September of 1979 (and it’s the state I’ve lived my whole life).
The fact that Kansas' founding members are actually from Kansas--I had never really associated them with their namesake state even though they had that name. Shows how dim I am. Dust in the Wind? Had to be from Kansas. Duh.

I hate to go with Slipknot, but they are an easy pick as they're from Des Moines Iowa. Another band I can think of is Rush from Toronto, along with their buddies Max Webster who are also from Toronto... which is also where I'm from.
wow. too many to name, but off the top of my head.... Lou Reed, Talking Heads, Ramones, Blondie, all quintessential New York City. then there's the whole L.A. metal scene with Motley Crue and others (lots of others in hair metal) L.A. punk with Black Flag, Dead Kennedys, etc. Nashville country artists. Just a pretty huge category. and then there's London. Where do I start? Also, Manchester UK scene. New orleans has Dr. John, Fats Domino, The Meters, Neville Brothers, just to name a few. .
BTW If you are a rock doc fan, watch Oil City Confidential, about the band Dr. Feelgood. Excellent, and gives you a great sense of their hometown, Canvey Island. Weird place.
Lou Reed~ New York, Dr John~ New Orleans, James Brown~ Atlanta Georgia, Elvis~ Memphis, Muddy Waters~ Mississippi, Funkadelic ~ Detroit, Black Sabbath~ Brum. The Dubliners, Ohio Players...
The ones I immediately think of are probably not very known in the US: Amy MacDonald ---> Glasgow Die Toten Hosen ---> Düsseldorf Kaelan Mikla ---> Reykjavik When it comes to US artists it's hard for me to differentiate between the cities. I would go with Red Hot Chili Peppers for California and that sort of things, but no city in particular.
Arctic Monkeys: Sheffield. I love how Alex Turner keeps his Yorkshire accent and colloquialisms. It keeps their music rooted in their hometown--especially since they have songs (Fake Tales of San Francisco) that criticize people pretending they're from somewhere they're not. Fleet Foxes: Pacific Northwest. Not a city, but the quality of their music evokes a sense of walking around rural Washington state. Cocteau Twins: Grangetown, Scotland. The icy sound of their music and sing-songy tone of Elizabeth Turner evoke a cold, rural Scotland town feel.
Wherever Tony Joe White came from. Most probably was in his musical bones.. Professor Longhair NewLeanz Naw Leans.. Mamas n Papas /Beach Boys.. CALIFORNIA.. Ray Davies bona fide London.. Paul Heaton.. Any given Northern English city /large town of your choosing.. But its Lou Reed all the way New York.. The vocals alone.. Smalltown on Songs for Drella.. Charming.
A whole world of rappers. Eminem-Detroit, Lil Jon-Atlanta, Dr. Dre-Compton, Bones, Thugs and Harmony--Cleveland, Wale-DC. So far all of Philly has been left off, I think. Let's say Harold Melvin. Macon, Ga has quite a few, including the Little Richard and really the Allmans, although I would assign them to Atlanta. Chuck Berry--St. Louis. James Gang--Cleveland. Hank Ballard--Myrtle Beach, SC. Dylan-Hibbing, Mn. Buddy Holly-Lubbock, Tx. Elvis-Tupelo, Ms.
I don't understand jokes about The Cranberries, they were really talented and unique. Probably the second most important irish rock band, even more than Thin Lizzy. They are from a small city in western coast of this island, in fact Dolores was born in a poor and rural district of less than 100 ihabitants.
It's okay Joe. No need to mention both St. Paul AND Minneapolis. It is called the Minneapolis Sound, after all. Pisses off all the St. Paulites, but they got the capitol so I thin they'll be fine.
Regarding Guns N' Roses and L.A., I'd say you can probably extend that to pretty much every noteworthy hair metal band in the '80s. Which begs the question, why did those guys feel the need to wear so much leather and makeup? I've only been to L.A. a couple times, but on neither occasion was the weather appropriate for leather pants.

The most Irish artist of all must be Van Morrison. He also sings about his heritage quite a lot, sometimes about being Irish (Irish Heartbeat, One Irish Rover etc) and more often about Celtic spirituality in general (do a ranking of his albums some time). The Beach Boys made a career singing about an idealised Southern California lifestyle. Warren Zenón was very much LA in a darker way. The Kinks were incredibly English but more than anything they were a London band (Waterloo Sunset, Victoria). What about Bjork and Iceland? I don’t agree with associating The Pretenders with Ohio. It’s where Chrissie Hynde is from but the band has never been based there. They formed in London where she lived at the time and were very much a part of the British new wave scene.

John, Fats Domino, The Meters, Neville Brothers, just to name a few. .
to add some Nola rap/hip hop artists: Juvenile, Master P, Lil Wayne, Big Freedia, etc.
Black Sabbath & Electic Light Orchestra - Birmingham
BTW If you are a rock doc fan, watch Oil City Confidential, about the band Dr. Feelgood. Excellent, and gives you a great sense of their hometown, Canvey Island. Weird place.
It's on the Criterion Channel right now, if any of you have that service.
Dr John...New Orleans
Lou Reed~ New York, Dr John~ New Orleans, James Brown~ Atlanta Georgia, Elvis~ Memphis, Muddy Waters~ Mississippi, Funkadelic ~ Detroit, Black Sabbath~ Brum.
The Dubliners, Ohio Players...
The ones I immediately think of are probably not very known in the US:
Amy MacDonald ---> Glasgow
Die Toten Hosen ---> Düsseldorf
Kaelan Mikla ---> Reykjavik
When it comes to US artists it's hard for me to differentiate between the cities. I would go with Red Hot Chili Peppers for California and that sort of things, but no city in particular.
Is Kraftwerk from Duesseldorf as well?
@@roxannewalsh Had to look it up but yes they are! I don't feel a connection between them and Düsseldorf though.
Oasis and the Smith's - Manchester
Kasabian - Leicester
Bob Seager - Detroit
Yinz are great!
LA - Warren Zevon 'nuff said
Chicago from Chicago
Wherever Tony Joe White came from. Most probably was in his musical bones.. Professor Longhair NewLeanz Naw Leans.. Mamas n Papas /Beach Boys.. CALIFORNIA.. Ray Davies bona fide London.. Paul Heaton.. Any given Northern English city /large town of your choosing.. But its Lou Reed all the way New York.. The vocals alone.. Smalltown on Songs for Drella.. Charming.
Can from Köln and Einstürzende Neubauten from Berlin.
Bruce Hornsby...Williamsburg
John Cougar Mellencamp.... Indiana
Dolly Parton...Tennessee
Grateful Dead...San Fran
Outkast - ATL
Tom Petty - Gainesville FL
The pistols threw London in our faces, but the Kinks represented that town much better.
I married someone from Pittsburgh. And we got married in Pittsburgh. I had to hear all about Donny Iris that day from her friends.
We don’t exactly have a vibrant rock scene. - Joe
I love Ah Leah! Great song (were the Jaggerz from Pitt?)
Do an mgmt albums ranking
I don't understand jokes about The Cranberries, they were really talented and unique. Probably the second most important irish rock band, even more than Thin Lizzy.
They are from a small city in western coast of this island, in fact Dolores was born in a poor and rural district of less than 100 ihabitants.
We were just messing with one of our commenters. Not a jab at the Cranberries.
“They Got the STEELY DAN T-Shirt”
the DAN- NYC
It's okay Joe. No need to mention both St. Paul AND Minneapolis. It is called the Minneapolis Sound, after all. Pisses off all the St. Paulites, but they got the capitol so I thin they'll be fine.
Oh and Caravan from Canterbury!
and Soft Machine!
Aerosmith from Boston
Steve Tyler and Joey Kramer are from New York. Joe Perry New Hampshire
Not sure if Thin Lizzy was the correct answer for band most associated with Dublin, Ireland...

Dr John, Professor Longhair, James Booker, Neville Brothers, Fats Dominos and a little bit Randy Newman to the New Orleans city.
I think of Detroit when I think of the White Stripes cause Jack never shuts up about being from there
Jack White has a long way to go before he catches up to Kid Rock in terms of not shutting up about Detroit.
RANDY NEWMAN- I LOVE 💕 LA.
PET SHOP BOYS- WEST END GIRLS.
Blondie/Dolls/Ramones = New York City
Seger
