dude, I see you as the new Eric Clapton of guitar at this day in age. That reference being that people refer to Clapton as being a "surgeon" of the guitar. I interpret that as meaning that there is so much attention to detail. I see it, but I also see the Jeff Beck (GOAT) references. You are the best of both worlds 👌
Such a great vid. I think you've got a blue "Fallen Angel" T built by Michael Couling. I've got the other one which is gold. Such a great guitar. Come to UK soon!
“Just cause you are working a 9to5 and playing music does not mean that you aren’t a musician or you aren’t a career musician or anything like that” God knows how much I needed to hear that Thank you so much for saying this 🙏🏻
Yes! If you are focusing your attention on music in a meaningful way outside of work you are still a musician! The 9 to 5 is reality but we still get to sprinkle our love for music all over
Ive been really struggling trying to catch myself emotionally when it comes to playing and practicing. Seeing the attitudes of these players in these interviews has helped me a lot. What awesome people.
Playing unplugged really resonated - it allows you to practice without disturbing the household, and also de-ritualises playing to a degree, which can definitely be a good thing. Mark has very quickly become my favourite guitarist. If a benchmark of achievement for a guitarist is to develop a unique recognisable style, then Mark has absolutely excelled at that.
I've really been enjoying these. Probably my favorite content from you, honestly. Just chill vibes, wonderful insights, and great playing. I really hope you continue doing these, and I hope they have legs view wise. I'd love to see more of the artists you've done Podcasts with in the past come on and meet in person with the same format. It helps so much that your such an amazing player in your own right; I don't think many people would be able to keep up with all of these legends (kind of just gotta be a legend yourself).
I had the pleasure to meet Mark at a PRS event at Five Star Guitars a couple years ago. He was wonderfully nice in person, very down to earth and super chill to talk to. It's so great when your guitar heroes are fantastic people on top of being fantastic players.
Man is Mark having a moment right now or what? I feel like he's been hitting his stride in a big way lately, or maybe I'm also just lucky enough to have caught him twice in DC in the last few weeks, both on his own in a really nice intimate venue, and then followed by the tour with Cory, and now a pleasant surprise to see him here! He's easily one of my favorite players, and he's really fabulous at not only commanding attention, but also carrying other musicians by elevating in the background in just the right ways, the 4th jam section in this is a shining example. I was lucky and got a few chances to talk with him over the years, and he could not be any nicer of a person, so if anyone is just finding their way to his music for the first time, please take the time to appreciate the sheer volume of amazing music Mark has been making over the years.
Man is a multi-time grammy-winning artist, and is always plays with some of the greatest musicians and artists in the world (many of whom he seems to genuinely love as people). He's been having a moment for the a decade 😂
@@how2betight Haha I'm just being facetious for fun, his career definitely continues to trend upward, for sure! I just found the phrasing "having a moment" kinda funny considering the astronomical heights of his success hahaha
Marks musical vocabulary is effing impressive! Well orchestrated episode, Tyler. I’d find it so scary trying to play along with Mark. You did a great job 👏
The part about the PR firm internship really hit home, I'm a professional animator now but years ago I was standing in a shoe store in Seattle thinking the whole time "I don't belong here".
I only know Mark from his contributions to the Fearless Flyers. His solos and great little parts here and there are sooo amazing. "Swampers" "Running Man" (the way he structured his solo on the live in Europe version - mmh such a treat) "Red Arrows" "Thunderbirds". Thanks for sharing your music, Mark and thanks for having him here and giving him the opportunity to share his views. I have to check out Marks other stuff
Mark is phenomenal. A great interview/hang, too. Watching you guys play is quite informative. We get to hear what you're talking about. Excellent format. Please do more like this!
Top 5 of all time for me. He is so tasty but recognizable... difficult combo. It's like Mark, Shawn Tubbs, Jimmy Herring, Derrek Trucks, and a handful of others that are insanely terrifying because they are full of chops, but it seems so effortless. Truly one of the best ever.
One of my favourite guitarists. Great interview. I felt "all along the watch tower" didn't work/jell so well. but, then the rest was just epic, especially the different moods within a solo. absolutely candy to the ear, and makes your brain explode with idea's. My favourite guitar style is anything where you can feel the soul of the guitarist in it. Mark oozes soul. It's taken hours to get to the end of this video, as i keep pausing and get inspired to pick up my guitar.
and i play unplugged all the time. Only as i like quiet in the morning at 4am when i wake up and family still asleep. but i find it inspiring as you hear mistakes well, i don't find it forgiving.
I've never questioned Mark Letteri's music in that the next song is "too different" his music to me has always felt like mark has his guitar in his hand, traversing through these different musical worlds respectfully adding a bit of himself into each of them, or telling an untold story . . . I didn't plan on getting Philosophical but I just started writing and this came out haha. basically i love and take a lot of inspiration from Mark Letteris approach and just the music itself . I've even started an attempt to create my own instrumental music and post it here on youtube. so far its alot of fun! If you read this all, much obliged . . .
Mark is the least "guitarist" guitarist I've ever heard. He seems like he'd be more akin to a game of hockey or football than playing guitar, then he straps on, and it's shred, groovy, amazing music. Lots of brotherly love for you, Mark!❤
This is incredible! I loved his explanation of dragonfly. It makes perfect sense now where he drew the inspiration and I’m gonna love listening to it all the more
While Mark is trying to figure out his voice we are all being blown away by his journey through all these different sounds and feelings he brings to our ears.
Mark is my favorite guitarist for sure. Ever hear the Guitar Band Album? His solo on Can't wait for Perfect is so good I listen to it over & over. The groove is so so good.
Great Interview. I was so disappointed when Snarky Puppy toured Melbourne Australia in early 2024 and neither Mark or Larnell made it along. Damn I so wanted to see them both. Maybe next time. Mark's latest album is a killer.
Really interesting perspectives about where we find inspiration. As a horn player I’ll happily confess that my inspirations in jazz improvisation include guitarists like Jim Hall, Wes Montgomery, John Scofield, and several others…
I take full responsibility for ensuring that Big Wreck gig occurred at the Sanctuary. I saw that open date and messaged Brian and urged him into looking into it. He called me out at that gig that night. It was completely epic.
"You might know him best from his signature PRS Fiore guitar" Not all of the amazing bands and artist that he's played in/with? 😂 You are a great musician interviewer, my guy, first time watcher. Great insightful questions, and unafraid of the more nebulous and philosophical sides of talking about music. Subscribed, looking forward to watching more!
As a songwriter, I SO relate to the dragonfly song section differences! Sometime when I’m stuck on creating a new section, I’m going to try to visualize the sections as different species or something to see what ideas come out. Thx Mark!
Big fan of bob reynolds from Snarky. As a tenor sax player ive had the reverse experience and planted guitar lines on the sax . Its helped me learn without any formal training.
Idk how I missed this model, but I just bought a PRS Paul's Guitar and I was looking for an HSS design- couldn't find one in the SE line. Both the retailers I checked must've been sold out of them. I just checked online, and several places had them, but neither of the places I checked had one and since I didn't know they existed, I didn't think to look anywhere else. I kept thinking though that it was really odd that they wouldn't have at least one HSS design in the SE line- it's an extremely popular config. All that said- I'm glad it worked out the way it did because this Paul's Guitar is freakin' amazing. Costed quite a bit more than the Fiore, but I think it's worth it. I've never heard a split HB that sounded like a real single coil- until I got this guitar. They sound as authentic as any real single coil I've ever played- and yet when in HB mode, it's gets as heavy as any LP I've ever played. With brass in the bridge, it will even do that Tele twang-thang. I suck at doing it, but it will do it if you know how. I realize I sound like someone who just got a guitar and is in the honeymoon phase but- go look up the reviews on this thing- I'm not alone.
I played unplugged for ever and it got to the point where once I'd plug in I noticed I played less freely, if that makes sense. I've never been an effects player, so the meh SS combo over too many years sort of boxed me in I guess. Oh, and I developed a heavy right hand. I finally use lighter 9 and 8 gauge string sets once I focused on a lighter touch. Helped to start using tube amps with some multi-effects and modelers.
Well damn, MusicIsWin!!!! You went ham on these jams!!! It ain't easy to stand before a guitar gawd and hang with him. Mark be goatin'. And i do agree. The horn players with a pedalboard go burr.
I don't tend to agree with trem bar nuances as being,"shredding." To me, when you shred is when you play with a variety of skill, speed, and intensity. His assessment of expression like a keyboard wheel or bender is more accurate of what he does. I do dig the Snarky Puppy stuff! Nice chat and jams. Thanks guys!
Unplugged yes! I do that all the time, when I'm learning songs, doing exercises, practicing licks, etc. Probably 90% of my playing time is unplugged and sitting at my computer. Part of the reason is that with 2 kids, and not really having a soundproof area to play, I can't get loud.
Solid hang, my dude! Thanks again for hosting and jamming!

Indeed absolute class

Mark needs a Horn section in his band... he got this!
Marks solo on “Easy Lover” the the Martin miller band is one of the best guitar solos in 10 years, it absolutely rips!
Absolutely!
This. It is my go-to for inspiration to pick the guitar back up.
I had the pleasure to meet Mark at a PRS event at Five Star Guitars a couple years ago. He was wonderfully nice in person, very down to earth and super chill to talk to. It's so great when your guitar heroes are fantastic people on top of being fantastic players.

This needs to be a series, the prs Mark series, you got Lettieri, you need Tremonti, Holcomb next.
Hell yes
100%
Quite a roster too:
Myles Kennedy
Mark Tremonti
Carlos Santana
Mark Holcomb
David Grissom
Dustie Wearing
Zach Myers
C’mon, Tyler. Do the thing 😊

Great interview. I love Marks' Fearless Flyers and Baritone Sessions (and everything else as well)
Mark's solo on Easy Lover with Martin Miller is pure MAGIC.
So glad you posted this, love that song and it was a great cover!
Great interview. Mark is such a legend, but geez Tyler you’ve turned into a beast as well man. Keep it going bro.
The intro jam. 1:32-1:38. And that chord he pops at 1:37. Dayummm. 😮
Love this style of interview with plenty of jamming and examples.
Long gone are the days of watching Mark Tuesday nights in the regal room! You’re crushing bro!! Such a blessing!
I love these podcast-esque videos. so cool 👍

One of the reasons I love the Jude Gold podcast is cuz he plays with every guest. More of this Mr win
I enjoyed this. Keep on with music being a language. Speak from the heart through the tips of your fingers. Good show guys.

Who wouldn’t want to jam with them? Love both these dudes. The ‘one-minute library’ was so relatable 😂.
Mark's solo in that Purple rain cover is literally a masterpiece. It makes me feel things I didn't know existed. Thanks MIW!
Say that again and now without that annoying and completely misplaced and unnecessary word "literally." It is a virus. Just stop it.
This 💯!!
Man, the demo with the whammy bar/vibrato arm was suuuuuper lyrical and sonically similar to slide-guitar. Lovely vocal qualities there

As a 20+ year horn player about 13 months into learning guitar... Can confirm - we are encroaching :D

I'm a huge fan of Mark! I keep bugging him to come to Grand Rapids, MI, but he continues to snub me! WTF, Mark?!
I play unplugged so often... I love the nuance and the nonsense. VIBES!
Love both of your playing and human-ness!
Mark you oughta add a shell pink or sea foam green to the PRS lineup, but with the grain showing like that red one!!!

the way he ties visual ideas to musicality reminds me of Devin Townsend when he describes painting a scene with his guitar
The fact that he called it "fake Jeff stuff". Respect, because their will never be another Jeff Beck 👍🏼

Agree. Play unplugged all the time when trying to work out a song etc.. plus it doesn’t po my wife🤘😎

His Solo album is very freaking great ! I’d love to put him in a time machine and play with Steely Dan .
3:42 you always know cory when you see him its unmistakably him 😂
Very inspiring , but what do you call the white fret board ? I never seen it before 🤪👍
Amazing Mark!
Hammer. That was badass. I’m relearning guitar thanks to Eddie vanHelen
Nice to see those 2 Strats hanging on the wall.😊
Is that an early 90's Strat Plus hanging on the wall? Great video btw!
hearing that Mark has “schmutz” on the same spots as me is such a relief. my fiore is BEAT
My current top player for sure, along with Lari Basilio
What’s the chord being played over the one chord vamp?
Mark's tone is WIN
ML makes it difficult to be start struck over him until he starts playing. Then you remember who you're in the room with. He's the best kinda guy.
Mark is such a nice dude
Good stuff !
He's my hero
I picked up my guitar to play it unplugged as soon as I sat down to watch your video 😅
Black Iris is my favorite song off the new album
You guys are to cool!!!👍
Dude ❤
Tyler, do you have a connection to Justin Derrico? That guy is absurd and I'd love to see him do one of these interviews with you!
I love the blue guitar it’s sick
