  • You don't need some special piece of wood to turn an interesting project! Using a cracked piece of cherry crotchwood that was pulled from a firewood pile, I turn a wide rim bowl, maintaining the shape of the diverging branches with just a little strip of bark remaining on opposing sides. It is just under 3/16" thick, about 14" at the widest points, and the bowl is 5" in diameter.
I think the process is generally self-explanatory. I use a few different bowl gouges, a skew, and a bowl scraper. The only "trick" is working your way down the rim just an inch or so at a time and try to avoid having to back up to a section that you're already past. Just be aware of your fingers at all times.
Feel free to ask questions in the comments. I try to get to them all. Thanks, everyone, for watching! Please subscribe & share!

    --- Attention ---
Please note, my videos are for entertainment only. They are simply demonstrations and are NOT intended to be instructional. Proper training and experience are essential before attempting to use any woodworking equipment. Do not attempt projects or techniques that are beyond your skill level or your comfort level! Serious accidents can happen in an instant and bandaging wounds or sitting in an emergency room is much less fun than woodturning. You are always responsible for your own safety. The only rules are: 1) Be careful; 2) Have fun.
