@Bailey Law Made even worse in hindsight when you realize that if the lords had opened up to each other, basically 80-90% of the conflict could have been avoided. But considering that Edelgard is so emotionally damaged she walled herself off to prevent further loss, Dimitri is one bad moment away from becoming an unfeeling, rampaging monster, and Claude, who is in a place similar to Edelgard's because of his heritage, though far more optimistic, is to wrapped up in his own schemes and Alliance politics to reach out to the others. Not to mention Rhea, who should have been able to prevent this due to her position as Archbishop and overseer of Garreg Mach and thus the students of the Academy by the way, was to focused on ressurecting her mother to notice or care about these issues. In short, the issues of everyone in a position of power made this war not only a possibility, but inevitable, El just lit the fuse to the bomb EVERYONE helped make.
Depending on your worldview she either did EVERYTHING wrong or she did nothing more than what she had too. I personally side on the latter. Given her situation and what she was ultimately attempting to accomplish in eliminating a faulty crest system that determined your worth in life practically before you were born, and destroying the Goddess that perpetrated that system she did what she had to do. She attempted to handle things peacefully at first but like someone mentioned above, with Dmitri being a head case and Claude being too untrusting and prideful in his schemes, war was the only option available to her to change the world they lived in.
And also, Edelgard’s war was with Rhea and the church, not with the faith of Seiros itself. She actually had no ill will towards the alliance or the kingdom at first. However once it became clear that the kingdom would unquestionably side with Rhea, she had no choice as but to go to war with them as well. Not as Edelgard, but as the Emperor of Adrestia
Well... she lead a secretive rebellion for years that resulted in many casualties, she colluded with arguable the most immoral group of individuals in the world behind countless wars and massacres, started a war that killed hundreds of thousands of people and poor managed her troupes which lead to pillaging and looting of defenseless settlements, and tried to forcefully take away one of the most efficient coping mechanisms known to the world (faith) because she wanted to force people to be entirely self-reliant which would cause a lot of people who use it for support to fall even if they function will so long as they have that support.
In short she was overly idealistic, extremely short sighted, and just plain treacherous. Yeah Rhea isn't much better considering the shit shes been doing for an even longer period of time but comparing two apples that are rotten to see which is less rotten is kind of pointless because they are both poison.
Edelgard didn't even try to make the changes she wanted to see peacefully. Sure her childhood was fucked but that doesn't give her free reign to trample anything she doesn't like underfoot
