I love my Force, bought all the plug ins, when on sale. Had a 500GB SSD installed, filled up quick so ordered a 2TB. I’m a sucker for grooveboxes, i got MC 707, Verselab, SH 4d amongst a few other bits and bobs. I hope they make another Force, upgrade it with a decent processor, 8GB ram, mpe, throw everything at it. There’s a challenge.
I caught that "as of late June 2022" near the end, look at you flexing your backlog :). Good stuff! I own a handful of those and the MF is definitely "weird" - it says it right on the box, but in a very good way! The tracks is almost utility at this point; but the Syntakt / Polyend Play get more attention of late because they're new and different.
Thank you always for the content on your page, I've learned a lot about the circuit tracks and the old school Korg Electribe2 both of which I use, but your tutorials and encouraging sound design and synthesis is amazing, your channel is an invaluable service, thank you!👍
I agree that the "128 voices" of the MC 707 can be a bit misleading. What I found helps is to stay away from the "virtual analog" stuff where even the filters eat up extra voices beyond 12dB. For most of my own sounds, I stick to PCM where it seems to be the case that 1 oscillator = 1 voice and the TVF is "free" as far as I can tell. But your mileage may vary, and I may be wrong. In any case, here's to hoping for an MC 707 MK II with a more powerful CPU/DSP, the machine could really use it. But then again, it could also use ACB and FM but I guess Roland will never go there since they have the TR-8S to sell as well.
What you said at 15:59 ("it's so powerful, but not as powerful as it initially presents itself") pretty much sums up the MC-707 experience compared to the marketing materials perfectly.
Hey Gabe. Have you done any sound design on the 707's software editor? I have the TR8S and its software is great - just wondering how good the equivalent experience is. Thanks! 👍
I don't have a 707 (i do have the mc101 & tr6S), but the mc101 has just received an update that unlocked damn near full sound design capabilities for the ZenCore Engine, & the flexibility in the sound design is surpisingly deep, so I can only guess the mc707 is the same if not a bit better. I'm not sure how much access you have with zencore stuff on the tr8s, but the tr6s is fairly limited when compared to the Mc line, but it makes sense since it's focused on drums
I've done a little bit with the software editor and it's pretty good. Given the choice, I'd still design sounds on the units themselves rather than in software but it's pretty well laid out.

Great video Gabe! @14:36 very fair criticism of the MC707, I think a hack to get over the polyphony limit is to bounce stuff like chord stacks to a looper track, maybe utilize looper export & have a drum track solely dedicated for melody/harmony looper exports. Still, very annoying & should've been taken into consideration when making a flagship product, but at least with the updates, they have suitable work arounds (at least for me when I'm working in the mc101)
The last freak firmware update was great, but still no metronome for realtime recording, love it’s strings and the cycling envelope. The microlab has cord memory as does the freak in all the oscillators types.
I really enjoy MC707 stand alone but I use it primarily as a sound module for MPC Live 2. The two together is a very powerful combo even if recording some external gear. I think the stock Akai sounds are so-so while the 707 stock sounds are much better. I have no interest in buying expansions or plugins from Akai so the MC-707 gives me over 3,000 quality sounds/presets to pick from and add effects to. Then I use MPC Live 2s sampling capabilities, looper and song mode to bring everything together. Alternately I can run MPC Live 2 into 707. I prefer the other way of 707 into MPC because I can first capture all the sounds I want for a song from 707. The samples/loops/clips/keygroups etc will be saved on MPC. Then I can disconnect from the wall and 707 & use MPC Live 2s portability factor to finish the song outside, at a park, on the couch, in bed, etc. to put it all together. Yeah the cost of the two together is as much as MPC X by itself but I get 3K more sounds, 16 more pads, physical faders and portabilty the X don't have. ✌️
Always appreciate your content, Gabe. Quick question on the MC voice stealing you spoke about. Do you find that since the 101 only has 4 tracks, you plan your composition in such a way that voice stealing is less of an issue than on the 707, where the extra tracks make it a bit more enticing to scale things up?
What about Native Instruments? Did they reach out to you? :) Aaaand: Have you had any requests or collaborations regarding software (DAW, plugins, etc.)?
