    Watching Gabe Miller's video makes me glad my first real synth and main synth is a Novation Circuit. My Circuit is not the Tracks, but OG Circuit. A used OG Circuit is an unbelievable value!

    I just decided to KEEP my Syntakt too. Thought I'd flip it but it's just too good! 😊 Just posted my review of it, comparing it against the Digitone. I am thinking about selling my MPC however. As much as I love it, it's a bit too much of a DAW in a box to me, and I already have a DAW.

    • @GabeMillerMusic
      @GabeMillerMusic  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah the ultimate fate of my Syntakt is still up in the air but it stays for at least a while. For me the MPC has become a partial DAW replacement, but it's not sufficient or all that fun to use for everyone.

    • @sinewaymusic
      @sinewaymusic ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@GabeMillerMusic Yeah I feel like the MPC is overlapping just a bit too much with my DAW to the point where I began to seriously question why I'm adding the cognitive friction of porting/stemming work from one DAW to another one just so I can sit with an MPC in my lap first. I tend to spend hours on mixing, EQing and compressing tracks on the MPC, only to want to redo it again once in the DAW. It becomes a bit of a waste of time.
      The Syntakt makes that initial jam/creative session easier because it's not pretending to be a DAW in the first place. It's similar with the MC-101: these are "just" grooveboxes, they're not trying to be full production environments. The use case then becomes more deliberate: I will use them only to get a track going, as opposed to trying to EQ, mix and finish it in the groovebox itself. I find that this clearer separation in the hybrid workflow works better for me because it forces me to bring the work into the DAW sooner rather than later, before I'm tired of the song already. 😊

    Thanks for the video, I can relate to your experience. I recently sold my Digitakt as well as Digitone and Syntakt that help fund my purchase of the MPC Key 61. As a keyboard player and singer the MPC gave me more than enough sounds to use and a workflow that made it easy to create songs. I found my Elektron gear was very useful for jamming but I was not being productive in making finished songs. The fact that the Mpc allows such a seemless workflow with software has meant I can make my song ideas on the Key 61, perform them with vocal effects to flush then out and perfect the final touches on the computer. I thought I would deeply miss the Digitakt in particular but I have been happy with the MPC. I do wonder about relying on one device as a gigging musician but so far the process has been good. I appreciate your channel and commentary. Thanks.

    Good video 👍. I have a couple of synths that I'm not sure why I keep. The Boutique JP-08 is one. I'm probably the only person in the world who actually likes the cute little faders (a finger pinch instead of a wrist waggle) but too often it sounds like a generic analogue model shoved through something to make it sound like a Jupiter. It's hard to make sounds on it that get me excited. That same day I also bought a Reface CS which has got mojo by the bucket. The CS is definitely a keeper.

    I’m older. My advice… buy and store while you are young. When you are older you have lots of other financial obligations. I have enough old gear (and a place to keep it) that as long as I sell first I am never actually spending new money. Also know that sometimes gear doesn’t click with you when you get it… but it can turn into a favorite down the road. Just my opinion (which took a while to figure out, lol)

Basically anything that doesn't have a keyboard. They take up WAY less space and they're perfect for backing up smaller grooveboxes because I'm just gonna sequence the synth anyway, you know? Or I'll break out a midi controller if I need to. Nanobox Lemondrop + Dirtywave M8? :chef's kiss:

    I haven’t been able to convince myself to let any of my gear go yet, even if I don’t use something for a while-though I’ve certainly thought about it. I become so attached to having everything in my arsenal.
    I try to avoid buying anything with too many redundant features with what I already have, which makes it harder to give something up and lose its capabilities. I also save money till I can afford higher end gear from the very start, so I’m never tempted to upgrade-at least for the core parts of my studio. (E.g. RME interface/Adam A7X monitors/Senn hd600s) - though I also love low cost options where it makes sense, like with Behringer analog synths.

    I sold a ton of synths and samplers recently. I've young kids and realistically theres no chance of my using this stuff regularly for the next few years. So much of what I have is technology based (Im not into vintage synths) so I was faced with the option of storing it until I have free time, which means letting it massively devalue while newer (and likely better) devices get released. Or alternatively, sell a lot of it and reinvest the money in other instruments that are less technology based that wont devalue nearly as much, and in some cases increase in value. I went with the second option.

    Being a guitar player first beat making was, and to some extent still is, a challenge for me. I bought a TR-8S and forced myself to learn how to program beats. After I got that skill down I decided I needed an MC-707 thinking that the drum machine inside would allow me to ditch the TR-8S. Nope. I decided to keep them both. If that wasn't enough, before I bought the MC-707 I bought a Maschine MK3. I like the flexibility of all three and don't want to get rid of any of them. I don't see myself buying another piece of equipment in this area as I know how easy it is to accumulate gear while existing gear collects dust. Selling or keeping stuff is always a struggle, but I've let it go a bit in recent times.
    In my attic I have a closet full of gear that has either been replaced, I currently don't have have room for in my setup or I have something better. There's a couple of analog and digital mixers, drum machines, synths, etc in there. Sometimes I take stuff back out and redo my setup again, but really sell the stuff? Usually once the stuff is a couple of years old, people won't value it anyway, so I just keep it. So has my Digitakt, it's been in and out my setyp multiple times but recently I really got into it again and actually bought a Digitone to pair with it. These two are now central brain of my setup. Another one of these pieces is my old trusty TR8, I've had it since 2014, it's beat up and still works great. Sometimes I miss the immediacy of it, so I take it back out, put it in my setup and jam on.
    I do sometimes sell stuff though, especially when I've had something for like a year and I notice I don't use it a lot. Sequencer are usualy the things that I buy and sell the most, I just like experimenting with different sequencers to keep things interesting.

    I’m feeling same about digitakt. I don’t have syntakt, but I have MPC One and Force. If digitakt was a stereo sampler and had an SD card it would still be on my A-list, but otherwise sample management is a problem. Still great for dawless, but between the akai’s and Deluge, having a hard time justifying it. Still,I find it gets me going on pure techno jams unlike the akais, workflow just naturally goes that way, and has maybe some of my best results in that genre, so quick and easy. And it’s workflow and footprint naturally go hand in hand with octatrack, hard to give up one without the other, when the pair is a techno powerhouse.

    Yeah I had a similar thing and let almost all my Volcas go. I realised I liked having them just to have them. But practically, it just wasn't working. All my other synths are USB power + MIDI, and to have 4 small, not-that-versatile synths use up *12* cables is kinda nuts. Actually 16 if I include the cables that go from my hum-destroyer to interface. Still got a couple left but might shift them too.
    Now I have a Microfreak, Minifreak, TR6S, MC101, Deepmind 12 D and a Neutron. And honestly, that's got most sounds covered. I can do modular bloops, FM, lush pads, wobbly 80s stuff, drums, bass. Can't complain. I would say I'd like some centrepiece thing like an MPC but, I have the Maschine MK3 and the Push 2 (which tbh may also be on the chopping block). And I work on a computer all the time anyway so there's no benefit to doing what I can do in a software sequencer. Just not quite as good.

    He claims the Syntakt's fate is up in the air, yet he removes the screen protector... ;) Yeah I agree with your take on the Digitakt. Have an M8 as well and the M8 is just better than it in every way possible. Also, I think you mentioned the M8 being a mono sampler - the sampler is stereo, or at least it handles and plays back all the stereo samples I've chopped up, recorded, and such. Unless there's something I'm missing (which I probably am!) And I gotta agree with other comments - MPC is too DAWlike for me. Super powerful, but I could just sit on my computer. So I always go for my SP for my chopping and lofi beat sample creation.

    But I love the Circuit Tracks. It's this convenient little toy-like thing ... then you plug it into the app and you're like "OMG this is a legit synth!" Nevermind that it can sequence 5 external devices, mix 2 devices, runs on battery, and has 2 MIDI outs and sync.

    Hi Gabe, thanks for your valuable and detailed videos. After seeing your videos, I've decided to buy a MC-101 a month ago, however I still didn't get it because it‘s out of stock. So I'm wondering if I should buy another groovebox instead or just wait for MC-101.
    I once wanted to get a model:cycles for a long time before I knew MC-101, I still find out there're many great works came out from the M:C, but I rarely see a full song production from MC-101 (only) that really attracts me. I know MC-101 would have much more functionalities than M:C, I just want to know if it can really produce great songs like what the M:C videos achieved.
    I find out you just want to sell your M:C while keep MC-101, so do you think MC-101 is the winner if compares to Cycles? Considering I could only choose one of them for my budget and I don't have other Elektron gear. I want to buy a portable device which works standalone (DAWless) and I want to make full song on it. I haven't find any video that compares these two devices side by side, do you want to make one or do you know if there's any video about this?
    By the way, will Circuit Tracks be better than all these two? I know you love it very much.
