- This video features the song “Headclobbers” by John Tesh, the same man who composed the song “Roundball Rock” which is famously known as the theme song of the NBA on NBC broadcast (1991-2002). The song is known as the NBA on NBC’s starting lineups theme.
------
HISTORY:
John Tesh produced three versions of "Headclobbers": the first version for the Tour de France in the late 1980s, a second version from his album Tour De France: The Early Years (1990) in which NBA Sports used for the NBA on NBC (the music featured in this video) from 1995 to 1998, and lastly, a third version - which sounded rock music-like - was introduced during the 1998-99 lockout season and was used until the end of the 2001-02 season, which marked the end of NBC’s contract to broadcast the NBA. Hopefully one day, the NBA will make it back to NBC.
NBC would utilize styled graphics and music to introduce the starting lineups of the teams who were scheduled to play that day. Most of the time, the format was used in games, such as a national TV game during the regular season, their Game of the Week, and most frequently, during the NBA Playoffs.
------
HOW I MADE IT:
Work on this project initially began back in late 2022, I was busy with a lot of personal things so I decided to resume finishing it this month.
For the music, I found the entire 1990 version from John Tesh’s album Tour De France: The Early Years, painstakingly screenshot the website with the music playing from start to finish to create a screenshot video, then detached the music from the video and export it into a mp3 file. Then on Audacity, I cut parts of the actual song to recreate the one that was shown on TV, and lastly, looped it on iMovie as I was putting this video together.
On the other hand, the footage (you’re seeing) with the graphics and music in motion came from mostly NBA games that took place between the 1994-95 and 1997-98 seasons.

Never realized how much influence John Tesh had on my childhood lol. I played these songs in my head imagining myself in the league
I like how each team has its own matching color scheme within the graphic.
I hope that NBC will use this music with updated team graphics to introduce the starting lineups.
I was watching the NBA in the 1990s via satellite broadcast in Japan. Most of the broadcast was from NBC, so I listened to the music as it was. I found NBA satellite broadcasts to be very fun, and I felt that it was a powerful theme song that gave me a sense of elation. I am very happy and grateful to be able to listen to this over and over again on the video site.
I hope this comes back with the new NBC deal
Better than NBA on ESPN in my opinion.
Everything with the NBA on NBC was epic, so many legendary moments, calls, players, and their presentation. As I said before, maybe soon the NBA will return to NBC.
@zaneboado5454 Getting it back we'll be pretty hard considering it hasn't been back since 2002.
@@Rocketsfan-fu1xo I am aware but I read that ESPN’s contract with the NBA will expected to expire after the 2024-25 season, not unless they will renew it. Later this year, the NBA will announce who will have the broadcasting rights. So we’ll have to wait.
@@zaneboado5454 don’t be shocked that ESPN & NBA parted ways
ESPN will never let go of the NBA
Comcast CEO said he’s interested in the NBA so there’s a chance we get it on NBC in 2025-26 if they get a deal with Adam Silver. I’m sure the NBA wants more than 2 broadcast partners.
Was used from Christmas 1994 to Game 6 of the 1998 NBA Finals
I heard the song play for the starting lineup of the Game 7 2000 WCF between the Blazers and Lakers. Such an awesome theme
@@QCSNGridironWhat you heard was a remix with an electric guitar.
WOW. Thank you for posting this. I've been looking for this song since I was a KID!!
NBA is possibly likely to return to NBC next year
Well, we’re just gonna have to wait. The countdown is on.
@@zaneboado5454 tv deal negotiations starts in a couple of months
Really????
2 B Honest It Never Should’ve Left
NBA Inside Stuff Should Return 2
@@kevtacular2846 yup 💯

Phenomenal job! OMG! I was actually thinking about this song from watching some NBA on NBC clips recently. Finally have a name and extended version for listening. Thanks so much!
Also NFL on nbc is my second favorite sports theme It reminds me of those two wild card wins we had from 2011-2012.
Love that Smits and Mullen share the same haircut. Amazing video
Was looking for this track for DECADES. Thank you so much!!!
Since they are coming back after next season they should bring back this theme too
This made you want to go hoop afterwards!!!
That Orlando Magic lineup of Hardaway, Anderson, Scott, Grant, and Shaq brings back memories
Great job but someone can find from every game from November 1990 to June 1998
Hope this comes back as well in 2025
Incredible
If the NBA does return to NBC, I wonder how they would do the team logo formations
Old school story intros
Knicks - orange
Spurs - silver
@@dreamcage1801 what I meant by how the logos are formed (i.e. the Heat logo was like Heat would scroll on the bottom of the screen and the rim would flip before the flaming ball would go through)
Thank You Zane
No problem man, I’m glad you like it.
2:08 I'm not used to seeing Rodman on a team that's not the Bulls.
Thank You Zane... Is it possible you can post the other bgm NBC used during there stat overviews?
I'll try, it may take some time. From what I observed during NBC's broadcast, they would use real songs from other artists or instrumentals that NBC created (assuming John Tesh produced them) and the songs changes for every game. For instance, I remember in some of the stat overviews during the 1996-97 playoffs, I heard Robert Miles' "Fantasya" playing the background.
Again, I'll have to do more research on it. Thanks for the suggestion.
Remember when the Magic didn't suck?
Anybody know the "flashback" theme NBC used during that era?
👁️ know someone has uploaded the Here We Go Celtics, Here We Go chant on someone’s TH-cam channel. Can U upload one with feeling? That 🪵 🐝 gr8!
3:03 George Karl smiled at the cam after seconds, i saw it from another video😂
Bro you saw Micah Parsons in the NBA celebrity all star game 😭.
Yeah, him and CJ Stroud were impressive tonight. Both really could really ball.
@zaneboado5454 It's crazy how he does better in games that don't matter compared to the Playoffs.
When did Rodman play for the Spurs?
After the Bad Boys Pistons ended in 1992, Dennis Rodman joined San Antonio for 3 seasons before he went to the Bulls in 1995.
@@zaneboado5454actually Rodman only spent a season and a half in San Antonio. 1994-95
1993-1995
Not as good as the original but more popular I would think.
