I always sleep with either the TV or radio on, and I've listened to Jim almost every night for over a year 😂😂😂
@LeoGotRock same..and piddle my pud...
@LeoGotRock big facts 😀
But he’s not really in the business
Listening to Jim Cornette is more entertaining than today's wrestling.
i said that 10 years ago
Modern wrestling is not real wrestling. It's unbelievably coordinated ballet. I'd rather watch any old match.
Ah yes, the count out victory. What better reason to drop balloons.
Talking about the balloon drop at the end, Brian: Things are starting to drop right now. Jim: Yeah, enthusiasm!!!!! Line of the watch-along!!! Love these shows, best podcasts on here!
😂😂😂😂💀
Haha
It wasnt a slam, but Shawn simultaneously threw Yokozuna and Vader over the top rope in the 96 Rumble. Arguably the most preposterous spot in wrestling history up to that point.
That was ridiculous it usually took 8 men to eliminate Yoko and Vader
Maybe Yokozuna and Vader leaning on each other made them top heavy so Shawn didn’t have to push much to have them go over the top lol
@@MorganTyler86 During that time nobody talks about this but It was a *Super Shawn* at one time..
Yoko had tremendous cardio for a man of his size in his younger years. Extremely underrated wrestler and champion.
For sure.
Banzai!!!!!!
That ending of the match was the Participation Ribbon of celebrations.
Thus, creating the wrestling we have today! 😁
He was supposed to win the belt but Bret started crying backstage. He said he paid the dues and worked hard for WWF and deserved the push. He had also told Patterson to put Hogan Vs Bret in Vince's mind. Hogan refused.
Anyway the post Balloons and crackers celebrations were planned because Luger was winning the belt.
Patterson and Prichard told that they should drag Yoko Luger rivalry to Wrestlemania. Then in 94 they told Vince that Luger isn't drawing and told Vince to put the belt on Bret and hence they did a double elimination because Vince was still confused. But when Patterson and Brisco told Vince if they go with Luger they will quit WWF along with Bret, Vince decided to not put the belt on Luger.

Yokozuna is imo the greatest super heavyweight wrestler of all time and my favorite wrestler of all time. RIP. Gone from this world but never ever forgotten.
Oh, and I am glad that he kept the title at SS. Yoko was a far better worker than Lex, and losing that match completely so soon after winning the title again would have buried him, especially after his hogan loss at WM (which at least had somewhat of an excuse because he had already wrestled a whole match prior).
I look forward to these watchalongs all week.
Love to see them do Bret Vs Bulldog from December 1995 next!
“Yoko’s ass bouncing better than the ring ropes” Jim Cornette 2020. Pure gold.
Lex Luger is underrated imo.
Worst build up to a babyface not winning a world title!
Comparing Cornette's review to OSW's review is like night and day - especially regarding who actually got gassed first.
I see a bit of both sides. Like Cornette, everyone who worked with Yoko during his top run spoke about what a great worker he was, Nash and Taker in partucular. I don't think you can judge him gassing out in the same as other people although he was obviously knackered by the end.
From personal experience, a metal plate would hurt the person with the plate far more than it would the person getting hit. I still have plates in my lower right leg from a soccer injury years ago, and anytime I hit the plate on something particularly hard, it feels like my entire lower leg is on fire.
I Bet Cold Weather is Torture on Them Plates...
I Myself Have Missing Bone Structure...but I Don't Have TheSurgicalMetal.
@@aretnap3653 yes it is. I have plates and screws in my ankle basically holding my my foot and leg together from a sledding accident 25 years ago. On the wrong day it still acts up. As the older folks say, I can tell when rain is coming.
"You can't apply logic to an illogical situation."
I actually have the same plate in the arm Lex has....snapped it in a car crash on the steering wheel. I can totally vouch...my forearm has never been the same even with the plate and screws....when I try to lift something heavy I have nerve pain that shoots like crazy....
Point being, I would NEVER try to running arm tackle somebody with that arm 🤣🤣🤦🏻♂️

"a hiptoss"
I always loved Ron Simmons. I thought he was so cool as the WCW champ. I wish Vince had given him a serious singles push.
@@joshuam190 I remember when he beat Vader for the WCW title back in the day. Good stuff
@@joshuam190 He could have come in as Ron Simmons, but the WWF at the time was "new gimmick" territory.
Then miraculously, that deadly steel plate in the forearm was forgotten a few weeks later and it was never mentioned again as a gimmick in the following year.
Aside from the lame ending, the only other thing I remember was both guys sweating like pigs under 250 watt shop lamps!
I remember meeting Lex during his Lex Express tour when he visited the North Riverside Mall in Illinois. Waited like an hour to meet him.
He was supposed to win the belt but Bret started crying backstage. He said he paid the dues and worked hard for WWF and deserved the push. He had also told Patterson to put Hogan Vs Bret in Vince's mind. Hogan refused.

But when Patterson and Brisco told Vince if they go with Luger they will quit WWF along with Bret, Vince decided to not put the belt on Luger.
Keep these watch alongside coming!
The WWF dug themselves a Luger sized hole and should have stuck with it, done the only sensible thing at that point and put him over.
He could have held the belt for 4-5 months and when he inevitably failed, he then drops the belt back to Yoko at the Rumble and Bret wins it at Wrestlemania.
If they were going to not have Luger win at Summerslam, his push to the title should have ended then and there. Then Bret can win the Rumble solo.
To save the Bret Vs Owen match that wouldn't happen in your timeline.
The Million Dollar Man Ted Dibiase returned at the 1994 Royal Rumble.
I had your same idea of Lex losing the championship at the Royal Rumble but then have it that Ted Dibiase bought out the No.30 spot and have Lex be in that spot turning him heel.
Then have the exact same finish with Lex and Bret winning but instead Lex is now a heel and the lead wrestler of the Million Dollar Corporation.
Only thing then it's heel vs heel at WrestleMania X so idk if you keep it the same or turn Yoko Babyface at WrestleMania, maybe attacking Cornette but having him lose the championship. So Heel Lex winning the championship, going to the main event and losing to face Bret.
@@spetterman2916 So no Yoko/Taker feud in this timeline either? How do you write off Taker in that instance at Rumble time?
Vince thought that he had learned after the Warrior debacle, and so was trying to be cautious with Luger. Instead what happened was, it totally killed Luger. They shouldn't have rushed the program with Yoko so quick.
Jim has always helped with my anxiety.
Anyone else remember the followup to the body slam on the Intrepid when Fuji and Cornette kept claiming it was actually a hip toss, not a body slam. Though this might've been something that only played out in the pages of WWF Magazine.
It was more closer to a hip toss to me. I remember Ahmed Johnson slammed Yoko in 95 or 96.
Corny was literally at ring side when Ahmed slammed Yokozuna. come on man ;_; it's like the one of the two good things he did in WWF
He got kisses from Goldust and he got beat up by Ron Simmons
Talking about the difference in WWF and JCP style of match, a better Luger match I'd like a Watch Along of would be Luger vs. Pillman from Halloween Havoc '89.
Great match, I will always disagree when they say that Lex wasn't a good worker.
Jim. The wrestling treasure we all need. One of , if not , the greatest wrestling mind we have. Best podcaster in the buisness by far.
Cornette the Express were badassmfrs back in the days of good wrestling and today he is a beacon of profane hope !!
Lex Luger is the only wrestler in history going into the main event as a babyface replacement for another (Sting in WCW and Hogan in WWF) and not winning the title due to a countout because he wasn't over enough.
Can you think of another one with this distinction?
Bret hart cried backstage and threatened to leave and they changed the finish to count out so that it doesnt hurt Luger. Then Bret inserted himself in the rumble and burried Lex. Later lex didnt beat Yokozuna for the title and never became the WWF champion. That was all politics that Jim wont admit even if he knows.
Damn.... Lex Luger was always put in some f__ked up positions..
@@bourbon646 It did hurt Luger though because of the stupid celebration at the end. If not for that, it wouldn't have been so bad. But that whole pomp and circumstance (complete with Randy Savage in the ring for it I'd add lol) after the match, totally buried him beyond recovery. There was no way he could be taken seriously as a challenger for the title again after that.
@@ajk Not really. Luger won VIA Countout. So he didnt get burried. He still looked strong.
But they had to book Luger vs Yokozuna at Survivor series 1993 for the title. The fans back then wanted Luger as the champion. But the thing was dragged till Wrestlemania and it got stale. Luger was still popular despite that. But making Bret the co winner of the Roayal rumble and him not beating Yokozuna and winning the title in the longer run burried him.
I'm not sure of your age but Luger was much bigger than Bret as an international Star back then. He was quite Popular in WCW and they had to build right in WWF to make him big there. Luger was no Hogan. And nobody was even remotely close to Hogan till Austin in 1998.
Lex Luger, without a doubt had a better WCW run (even a better NWA run) than he had in the WWF/E.
In WCW=Multiple time World Champion & World Tag Team Champion.
In the NWA= United States Champion.
In the WWF/E=?????
The title should have “(the burial of Lex Luger)” at the end of it

The Trapezius claw a.k.a. the shoulder claw. If someone grabs you correctly and manipulates it right, it jolts your nervous system and zaps your strength, no lie.
The trapezius hold always bored me in matches.
Yea. Yokozuna was mainly boring in the Wwf
Savage cried during Aaron Neville's rendition of the Star Spangled Banner.
I can tell you that as a kid watching this, Luger was indeed over. Looking back and during WrestleMania 10, it seemed that the kids in my area were more into Luger while the adults wanted Bret. My house was also split. My father, myself and my youngest sister were rooting for Luger while my mother and older sister were rooting for Bret. I remember a lot of people going crazy when Luger slammed Yoko and they talked about it a lot.

Luger was never believable as a babyface, but in the NWA you could cheer for him against the Four Horsemen, who were REVILED at that time. It was great wrestling, and you could tell that the ongoing Dusty finishes really did piss off Luger, which made him give a stronger performance.
Yoko took a weak steel plate forearm shot to the head, bounced off the turn buckle corner, & literally walked into Luger's arms for that smoke & mirrors bodyslam. On Monday Night Raw, Ahmed Johnson, fake, implant triceps & all, was the only man to legit slam Yoko without a bouncing Yoko assist, from a static position.
Love these watch-alongs. Thanks, guys!
Even in hindsight they had nothing to lose putting the belt on Lex. They might as well have.

A thought on Lex: when he was first introduced, he was the Narcissus. I loved his introduction at WrestleMania, Heenan delivers a great promo about his near sexual love for Lex's body. A few weeks later, the Narcissus takes on Crush, who beats him in a match where the story is "this hotshot idiot gets overpowered, in an almost purely strength contest, by the tall Hawaiian Babyface with the nice smile". Then we get to the Intrepid, where Crush, a man who is clearly stronger than Lex, cannot pick up Yokozuna, but Lex, who it is clear in real life cannot pick up Yokozuna, because you can watch Yokozuna jump, and that was an awful body slam, barely picks up Yokozuna and messily drops him to the ground. That was what really killed this matchup for me. I don't want to watch Lex try Yokozuna, I want Crush. They shouldn't have had Crush on the Intrepid, they shouldn't have had Lex versus Crush, or, they shouldn't have pushed Lex as the strongest man in the WWF after being beaten by Crush.
Crush never defeated Luger. Luger defeated Crush on a few occasions.
Luger was a bigger international star than Crush.
@@bourbon646 My apologies.
On April 26th, 1993, on WWF Raw, Crush and Luger battle it out. In every instance, Crush is stronger than Luger. He overpowers Luger on a number of occasions. He proves that he is stronger than Luger. The match ends in a countout after Crush sees two Doinks in the crowd, and, as he is staring Doink down, Luger hits him with an elbow from behind. The ref does the quickest 10 count, and Crush is disqualified. Crush still proved he was stronger than Luger. According to the story they told us, Crush was the stronger man.
@@blaze5645 No doubt Crush may have been stronger. But Luger was the IT wrestler of that era. Specially Luger was so huge specially in the early 90s. He had the star value to drawn in kids and teenagers. Crush wasnt main eventer, he was upper mid carder at best.
Haku or the Stieners could whoop Hogans ass in a real fight. But Hogan was what made WWF big.
Similarly kane or Big show could have beaten Austin in a real fight. But Austin was the superstar and drew in a lot of money. That's how the business works.

Luger was never going to be Hogan,it just wasn't going to work. For people who complain that Vince should've let Luger have a run with the belt, where was the same energy when Crockett had 2 chances in 1988 to put the belt on Lex, Bash and Starrcade 88 cause he was hot that year. Just saying. 🤷♂️
Very true
Yokozuna was one of my favs in the day still is sad he is gone. I was watching Yokozuna from 92-94 his best years he was a great monster heel, his matches with Taker, and Bret great. But by 95-96 you could tell how much weight he put on as you could really see it, he was sucking wind after just a few minutes not like here.
I always wonder if Yokozuna lost the weight and got back to the weight here, or even WM9. I think Vince have brought him back in 98 as he was under contract by then. I can see him in some big feuds like Yokozuna vs Stone Cold would have been good, Yokozuna vs Kane two monsters, Yokozuna vs The Rock, Yokozuna vs Mankind, and for sure Yokozuna vs Undertaker to great rivals.
Off topic but its gonna be a long week before i get to hear Jim on the stipulation for the new match between Jericho and Pockets lol

I just wish Yoko and Bret had a year long feud after Bret’s loss at Wrestlemania 9 that didn’t include Hogan and Luger.
Ahmed Johnson body slammed him. but was basically same way as Lex.
Luger at the time of the Yoko match could not possibly have been juicing. When he came in as the narcissist yes but when he did made in the USA he was skinny. Definitely when he went back to wcw he was on the juice but when he was made in the usa he was small. I remember thinking, why did lex shrink??? Anyway. I felt the way a lot of people did then, lex should have gotten the belt, probably for a few months and then lose it back to Yoko. They should of never turn lex baby face he was good as a heel
The actual problem with the booking here more than the finish was the stipulation that if Luger didn't win the belt then he would not have another shot at the WWF championship and the Rumble was far away in people's mind to even consider it, so they're like "oh he won, but he'll never be champion now or have a rematch for the belt so why caring about Luger from now on?"

Agreed 100% with Cornette, Lex was a natural heel.
Even in WCW he seemed more comfortable being heel with Harley Race going against Sting and even being part of NWO he did some great work .
July 7, 1993 WWF Superstars Lex Luger is still shown as the Narcissist. Six weeks later he is in this top spot. Six weeks wasnt enough time to get Lex to the top face spot in my opinion.
I love the wrestling stories but Jim's politics is the pits..
As of today on the PeaCOCK, I think the ideal start time is around 2:16:10 instead of 2:15:56 because of edits
Randy was doing it all in '93. I think they figured everybody liked the Macho Man, so why not have him announce Luger? Though admittedly, his use here deprived us of the golden voice of Howard Finkel
I was about 12 when this match happened but I remember my cousin's then boyfriend talking about meeting Lex Luger in the hotel he worked at in Chicago and Lex told him he either hurt his back or his bicep (can't remember which) slamming Yoko but just think if he was able to get under him he probably would've been injured worse.
Yoko would have probably given him more if he wasn't blown up for a like 19 min match.
Funniest match finish ever. Lex Luger doesn't win the title but celebrates as if he has with fuckin confetti and everything. It's great lmao
Vince was stuck with the All-American idea.
I was starting to watch WWE around this time and remember seeing the body slam challenge and all the Lex Luger promotional hype they were doing at the time. Then the ending of the actual match when Luger didn’t win the title and even back then I was like ??? All that and he didn’t win the title? That was disappointing to say the least. You could tell WWF gave up on him quickly as he was in the midcard after the Yoko stuff was over with.
Lex Luger is a natural heel.. had no business being face..
Extremely strange decision after all that buildup

Ahmed Johnson slammed Yoko too. It was WWF's way to get Ahmed over. It worked.
I knew the celebration was bad but oh my god the video package afterwords. They made it seem like a Lex Luger memorial. And they compare him to Neil Armstrong, JFK, MLK, Washington, Lincoln, etc. that was painful

Yoko's ass bounced more than the ring did!
I would compare the way that they pushed Lex Luger 2 how they pushed Roman Reigns the first four years. At least that's what it felt like to me as a kid like we already knew Lex Luger from WCW and he wasn't getting any better no matter how hard they shoveled it in
4:49 he's hyperventilating already lol
Should’ve been Hacksaw Jim Duggan vs Yokozuna.
That a man named Lex Luger was supposed to be an american hero also boggles the mind, if you think of it 🤣
This is one of his funniest watch alongs
This is the match were Jim slapped around luger and Yokozuna backstage and threatened they're families
Pardon?
The brutal rock bottom from Yoko was on Vader during the Survivor Series match. Not the easiest opponent to attempt that on, but was pretty ugly.
Let Lex go over, if he flops, do a screwed finish at Survivor series that gets the belt back on Yoko and go from there
Where is the link ? is it on youtube or network ?

Early in 93 Lex was a monster heel as the Narcissist. his gimmick was like a much darker, meaner version of shawn Michaels with the mirror flexing routine. Narcissist was a total psychopath. its strange that was the guy they tried to make the face of the company just months later.
It was clear after that, that WWE had no plans to put any Championship Titles on Lex Lugar and they didn't.
I think he had a tagteam title run a couple of years later
