Great, short and concise information… been looking at Merida and Panama and the DR for retirement… like every where it’s costing more and more to survive…
Those were the 3 countries we considered. We chose Mexico because it’s not an island and has all the services we need. Mérida is also the 2nd safe rest place in North America and it’s close to the beach.
Monty, Perhaps its because we're both from the ATL (Clayton County/Jonesboro) that I agree with your assessment. Albeit, I was in Meridia for only three weeks. Three weeks where the daytime temperature didn't fall below 104°f. In fact, the day I returned to the ATL was the first day of rainfall. That said, I too, came to Mexico for the adventure. While I keep an eye on expenses, I came to Mexico to enjoy their culture, and cuisine. Last November, I started in Tampico, then came south to Veracruz. From all the reviews on YT, Yours being the top-tier as far professionalism and credibility, about Merida, I booked a flight on Delta/Areomexico from ATL to MID, and 21 nights at a budget-friendly hotel in Centro. Frankly, I wanted to see if Merida is a hot as some folks say. It is hot 🥵, but it's not hotter than west Texas, and it is manageable. Monty, I watched your video about Tren Maya. I wanted to take it from one end to the next, specifically to Cancun, but because My spanish language skill needs practice, and because I was down to My last few days, I didn’t go. Next time I may fly into CUN and either take ADO, or Tren Maya to Merida. You nailed it when You said do your running in the morning, then try to stay out of the midday sun. Evenings in Centro Merida is amazing. I already miss it. Except for bus ride to Progresso, and the tour to visit Mayan ruins, Yellow Town, and cenotes, everywhere I wanted to go was within a half-mile walking distance from my hotel. In fact, the hardest part of My day was determining which restaurant I was going to eat at. And while it may sound counterintuitive, I lost weight even though I ate a full breakfast and 3-4 fish tacos, or 3-4 pork tacos and a couple beers, at least five days a week. I had to buy a smaller belt to keep my shorts from falling to my knees. Probably, it's because the restaurants in Merida serve local grown, non-GMO produce that was not sprayed with preservatives and pesticides. But, hey. Mexico is a "developing third-world country". What do they know about growing quality produce... 😉 Monty, keep up your good works. I'm looking forward to your next video. -Hobo Nomad
Hi, because of you I took my first trip, I got back to the US last night, we had a great time in spite of the rain 🌧️.. We stayed with a lovely Mexican couple and they treated us like family... Can't wait to take my next trip. Beautiful place, people, Monti is right don't listen to the negatives, go see for yourself
Most importantly, as long as you pay your taxes, are respectful and don’t gentrify then you should be good. Mexico is very accepting of people who love Mexico and want to stay.
Happy for you. We're on that journey to live abroad. We've been going to Mexico for over 32 years. reliant on my wife for translation is going to have to stop, and I'm going to increase my ability to conversate and interact by learning more conversational Spanish. Great video.
basic connversation didn't take long. The uber speak was pretty routine doing my first 3 weeks of intensive classes. It took 1.5 years before I would engage random folks with I came into contact with humor or small talk. Today was a good example. I got into the uber and started the conversation with the driver asking him how his day was going.
I tried looking up info about the foreign national registry program but couldn’t find any info. Do you know where I can find more info? Thanks so much!
The special regularization program is known in Spanish as Registro de National Extranjeros. Translated to Foreign National Registry. Try looking up those terms for sources.
Hi Monte, you always share valuable information. Question: I live in the US, and I am seeking to apply for a temporary residence in Merida, Mexico. Do I need to show a Mexico address to apply? If so, can I use an Airbnb Mexico address?
You just start with residency which starts at a consulate outside the USA. I have a course that teaches you every step of the way. At the very lesser you should check out the outline as it covers the things you will need to be concerned with in your first 24 months of planning your move. There are about 30 ie tram all electric units. They also just added about 40 hybrid electric smaller va y ven buses. Other cities like Campeche also implementing these units From China and Spain
@Mexitplans My sister-in-law says MX City has some All-Electric buses. We just took several Tufesa buses from Nogales, MX to Mazatlán and back with our 2 Toy Poodles. We had a great experience, really smooth buses. We did have to stay in Obregón, MX for 24 hrs (stayed in Airbnb) on the way to Mazatlán, bc there are only certain Tufesa buses that let you take your dogs on the bus with you. We only had one crazy bus driver from Mazatlán to Culiacán, that tried to say that his bus was not a bus that accepted mascots, which was bullshit, bc we had the tickets for the dogs and were identified as mascotas on their tickets. She wasn't having it though, my wife being from Mazatlán, Sinola, doesn't take any racist shit towards me being a gringo.
Ok. I’ll bite. Tell me one positive story you’ve ever heard about Mexico. When the US Media only reports drug trafficking, violence, and migrant problems do you think that’s not a concerted effort to make Mexico seem inhabitable? I don’t experience any of those things living here but I’m sure they exist just as they do in the US.

Yes. You can use the temporary address of your airbnb. That’s what we did. When you move. You need to submit an address change.

how are the locals dealing with the growing expat community? are they frustrated about it?
Not really. It’s growing but it’s small comparatively. We are about 16K total Canadians included.
@Mexitplans thanks for your reply. I'd love to hear more about the green spaces in Merida
I googled foreign national registry and could not find it.
Go to the inm.mx.gob this is the immigration site. Foreign National Registry is translated from registra Nacional de extranjeros

Yes.
I’ve owned a home in Merida since 2015. I could never afford a home there now. Best investment I’ve ever made.
Good to hear. Prices are definitely increasing all over.
