LEO standpoint, if you are in a situation that you need to defend yourself and this extent of force is justified and available, you MORE than likely would NOT be able to deploy a firearm. If someone is on you pummeling you and you can get your finger in a ring and pull across their torso, it is a fight ender. It would actually do MORE damage than a firearm. Using deadly force justifiably is not as black and white or easy as people tend to think. MOST of the time, you are defending your life against an ambush not an old west man vs man standoff. Force multipliers guys, your life is worth it.
I know this is an older video but I wanted to still say thank you for this video. It has given me new perspective on non edged impact trainers and how else to utilize them. It amazes me every time I watch one of Doug Marcaida’s training videos. He has such a unique way of thinking outside the box but such a way of simplifying the explanation.
Nice vid. Would like to see you'll make a video with the 599 impact and a guy in full protection armor so a more faster paced real life scenario can be displayed. .. love the vids. though keep em coming. ..
A $244.95 knife? Does it come with a personal trainer at that price? I have a feeling that most people who could afford to get this knife, could also pay for a private security force to follow you around. Why bother with the knife at that point?
Well that is not too bad. Considering it is a defense weapon. It is something you want to function when you need it. I guess it'd be better to pay more for quality in this situation, than to skimp and save with a cheap knife that'd break before you ever really need it.
If you are ever looking for a good quality knife it's gonna be right around $100. Cheaper knives just can't be trusted, I think $130 is a good amount to pay for your life.
What is your life worth? I think a $500 knife is crazy, I also think carrying a $30 knife is crazy. I am not a "knife guy" but I did buy a spyderco paramilitary 2 when they came out. I think i paid $200 or $220. There is no reason that i wont be leaving it to my son in 40 years unless i break it, i am not sure if it has a lifetime warranty but most of the high end stuff does.
I'm a knife enthusiast and I mainly collect high end knives, some as much as $400. To an average person it's not necessary and they just need something that functions. It's all about what role you need the knife to serve you. I personally get enjoyment from my mid techs and semi-customs, but I understand that not everybody is willing or able to spend hundreds of dollars on a knife. You definitely get better craftsmanship and quality materials with more expensive knives, but I wouldn't dismiss cheap knives altogether. There are some pretty good budget folders from Spyderco, CRKT, and Cold Steel among other brands that are in the $20-60 range and it will serve you well for defensive purposes. That said, just don't buy any of the crappy MTech or Tac Force knives. Those are not just cheap in price, but cheap in craftsmanship as well. I personally own and carry the Fox 599 karambit and I would highly recommend it as a tactical knife.
I recently purchased both from FOX, the 599 karambit trainer and actual knife, and Funker Tactical forgot to mention a very tiny but very important detail about the knife. While it's closed, you have the Emerson Wave feature facing away from you, but palm-side, there is a point. Not a sharp one, that's part of the "assisted opening" detail (when pushed, the blade is pushed out). That little point, when doing that little flail, if you hit something, that point can leave a real nasty mark or gash.
I have the Cold Steel Steel Tiger. LOVE IT.....but its too big and kind of impractical. I gotta grab one of those FOX karambits. I understand Cold Steel is releasing a folding karambit but it doesn't have the catch on the spine of the blade
Whats the song that plays during the second half of the video? (starts around 4:25) EDIT: Its apparently an insturmental from "King Reign - When My Eyes Closed" however i cant find the instrumental and at around 5:04 it starts to sound very different from the orignial. I also checked "Samuel Nevarez" soundcloud and while some of his stuff has a very similiar style, this particular instrumental isnt there. I hit a dead end, this song is so good but i cant for the life of me figure out what or where it is...
Or, for about half the price, you could carry a Cold Steel Rajah II, or for about the same price, a pocket pistol, or a nice stun gun. Hell, go for broke and get a Taser. Just competitive potions for y'all.
Just love how smoothly Doug speaks and demonstrates in the same time. Edit: While im at it, just imagine Doug in MMA with his Kali skills (since Kali can be used for Hand to Hand combat, and we've seen how great he is), every punches that goes towards him, he will use against his opponent. He'd probably make fighters submit in such a way we haven't seen before in MMA yet.
well... im not crazy enough to take on someone with a Karambit, you gotz more chances of winning a snowball fight in hell before fighting a skilled Karambit
Or, for about half the price, you could carry a Cold Steel Rajah II, or for about the same price, a pocket pistol, or a nice stun gun. Hell, go for broke and get a Taser. Just competitive potions for y'all.
Hey guys could you make a video where the guy is actually trying to hit Doug? I want to see this in real action where there is a hostile environment that would simulate a real world scenario rather than a drill environment shown above. Thanks! I love watching the videos btw keep up the good work XD
Allan Paolo Mejia no he’s asking if the companion of Doug can actually fight with Doug with trainers instead of creating openings on purpose to let Doug show the uses of karambits. But if that’s what happens, he wouldn’t be able to actually show the karambit functions as clearly and organised as in this video, in a tutorial DVD, which is intended to teach people by showing the actions step by step and in slow mo. Also, the skills and physical capabilities of each person in those kinda fights are major factors in deciding who wins. Not to forget mentioning that real life knife fights end quickly so we wouldn’t really catch what happens with our nooby senses. But I have to say, even with trainers, against Doug, the opponent would most likely die either of accidental heavy injuries (like “oops sorry didn’t mean to break ur skull”) or of shame. Idk why did I type all that, seems like I have nothing else to do in my nerdy life. Thank you for reading till the end I guess.
I think the Editor went to lunch and then repeated the bit from 2m:20s again at 2m:40s. Or am I just sleep deprived? Great video though, and Doug is incredible.
Question: how sensitive is that wave feature? Does it NEED clothes to snag, or can you just flick it against anything to open the karambit? For example, your opponent's chin after an uppercut like the one at 4:11 in this video or some other exposed part during a strike (noticed that both guys in the video were wearing long sleeves--what if you both had t shirts on? There are less surfaces to hook then), or a pass over your free hand (the wave looks pretty hooked though, so if it does catch on bare skin I think I'd rather bruise/hook the other guy instead of myself). I know Doug said it'd scratch if it connects, but would it actually deploy if you opened your hand? I'm considering getting one for martial arts practice/self defense, so I'd appreciate it if anyone that owns/has used one can answer this.
KPlaysHere I would say it depends on the angle of the wave feature snagging spike and also the sharpness/ pointiness. If for whatever reason one decides to sharpen it to a pencil tip’s sharpness then yeah I would say it will catch on a chin. Also, if your opponent has a sharp chin, that helps too. But even if it can catch onto a chin with the factory specs, I wouldn’t recommend doing that in training. Who would want to be hooked on the chin and have a bloody piece of metal spring into his/ her face right? XD when deployed the blade springs outward, which is extremely hazardous in training when u deploy it on chin and have an upward motion. It may hit your opponent’s nose or even eye.
Late response, But that little hook always gets caught on whatever clothing I wear. I cannot carry this knife in my pocket with the clip TOO DANGEROUS.
I know this is just for demonstration but it would be more applicable if his training partner was using his other arm also . . . . . . instead of just a single one.
I'm so tired of watching him go full speed against fake attackers. Lets see it full speed against a determined opponent for once. It seems really movie fake to me
Instructor and student both use markers and wear white. This is how real knife training is done. These "Doug" videos are getting old. Bottom line is dont be in a knife fight, there is no winner I don't care how Doug you think you are.
Fighter preparation and training are fundamental in case of fight. 1) Doug is insanely fast at full speed 2) acting fast is cool and give some show.. He's selling DVDs, you know? 3) I have 11 years of experience of knife fighting with straight knives and I saw a lot of blatant dudes that once distracted and shocked with RUBBER knives move not faster than his mate in the video 4) forget any knife duel: in knife vs knife he try to extend his reach as much as possible as any skilled fighter
Dim mak instant death pressure points are within your target range. The videos are on TH-cam & you'll be amazed. The problem is getting your hand into poking & hard striking condition without harming your hand & knuckles. You'll love those.
That's an interesting tool, but I'll stick to my H&K .40 for self defense. I'm sure it could be quite useful if you were to train extensively in it's use, but it's still limited.
If you're lucky enough to carry and deploy a firearm to stop a threat then great, but keep in mind that within striking distances, a firearm is basically a one-directional stabbing weapon, meaning you need it pointed towards meat to do any damage at all. A knife is multi-directional weapon, meaning it can stab, slash and cause extensive damage from many different directions, making it the more dangerous weapon within that combat range. It also doesn't have problems with ammunition, stovepiping and misfires. Is that an argument for one or the other? Absolutely not! Carry both if you can.
Waiting on the All new Improved 600 Series XT Karambit cant wait its gonna be better than the 599 XT HURRY AND DESIGN IT I wanna Buy One!! the 599 XT is just the prototype for the 600 XT MODEL
Bare handed against a wing chun guy they would somehow stand toe to toe. But if bare handed against a brazilian jiu jitsu or mma guy he would easily get taken down. But give him a knife in his hand and hes lethal.
Then people wonder why i love the Karambit. P.S. you can buy a trainer karambit if u dont want to kill the person... if u just want to beat him into submission and use the hooked dull edge to work the man or womans wrists or elbows u can... Im only 16 and i carry a Trainers Karambit just in case any Man starts a fight... :D love it
I got the 479 and can't wait to get the trainer for it, love this fucking thing. so epic. I was carrying my ka-bar usmc short and a spyderco tasman salt (Still carry that for random-whatever stuff) but the 479 is a bigger version of this from my understanding, can't be by much. Can't beat the deployment!
Dude that would be so weird in a fight to have a guy try to hit you, then realize his karambit isn't open. You fight and see him trying to catch your clothes, and you're like WTF!!!??!?!?!

Very nice indeed. It is a pitty that you cannot use a knife with both sides of the blade sharpened but I understand that it won´t be allowed to have it on you in public places. I live in Europe and this differs from state to state. In the Czech Republic there is no official limitation so good and bad depending who is holding the knife. Back to the video, it is incredible how Doug uses closed and open knife and can change it very quickly. Awesome as usual ;-)
keep in mind two things. 1 all that you're shown is happening at a slow speed for you to observe and study. the real deal or in a spar, it is much faster. 2 it's a knife. it's not as easy to fight back against someone with it, especially if they're skilled.
+Blazin'Blades Stop and think. First, this is training where he's trying to demo "how to". Second, how often have you seen two hands coming at once. No matter how fast they are, they generally come 1-2. Now the body has a scientifically proven neurological response called crossed extensor reflex action. As soon as you put pain signal into the first contact limb , intense and localised, the opposing limb will retract or at least malfunction momentarily. The beauty of the Fox trainer is you can achieve this without cutting the other person .( This is explained in the video series.) However,do it with a live blade and the lacerated limb will retract and the other one WILL hesitate. Hesitation in the face of a live blade = failure.
Doug is a great teacher but I feel so disadvantaged with a single-edge Karambit. like what is the point of using the clock system when only one side will cut? the impact of the weapon isn't enough to stun someone rushing you. You're so limited to what you can do compared to having a traditional double edged karambit.
This would constitute 'Assault with a deadly weapon' here in California and if you felt that much threat to deploy just the ring aspect, then that constitutes deploying the blade as you're in fear of your life or great bodily injury.
Using a knife without deploying it? If you are going to use the knife then you are all in. No fuckabout with blunt techniques. It's the business end or none at all.
And then explain that to a jury of 12 after the event as they cart you away to the pen. Same goes with a firearm....it's lethal force or not, but maybe you don't want to put holes in the guy. Doug is demonstrating non-lethal deployment techniques of the karambit which is brilliant because you can go from impact weapon instantly to lethal force depending on how the situation unfolds. People seem to focus on the physical combat, but seem to forget that there are two fights that can 'f' your life...the physical altercation and then the legal fight afterwards.
Force multipliers guys, your life is worth it.
That's a nice weapon, even without a blade it seems it can be used for lethal or non-lethal self-defense.
Doug is badass ! But it takes a significative amount of skill to apply this kind of techniques.
This video ages like good Scotch . The more times I watch it the more impressive he becomes.
Jesus mode this is why i love the karambit i can defend myself without cutting someone

Yes the 245 one comes with a trainer but you can buy the knife itself for 130

4:43 dude, that was really close omg
thought he died
The orange handled one is a blunt training karambit
Anyone know where to get that sick bag aka "George" that Doug uses? Or what it's called?... would really love to train while using one

Well done video. It's too bad there are so many people talking smack about solid training. I like your catch deployments. Great work.
imagine it being deployed on the chin and on the ear as you strike, i love kali its techniques apply in a variety of weapons!
that dojo is beautiful!

+Smokey Nope Same here, best we can do is ask +Funker Tactical - Gun & Gear Videos
pretty douchey that they still haven't responded...
Toxically Masculine Ik ;(
+Toxically Masculine Music by: Machinima Sound, Anze Rozman and Samuel Nevarez.
so just google this, and ask them ;)
I still can't find it. Did you ever figure it out?
Doug, thanks for sharing.
Do you ever let your demo partner win ??
:-D
An unemployed karambit in the right hands..... will KEAL
Doug Is A Great Instructor, But Iam A Student Of Instructor Zero, Create Space & Pull A Good, Hi-Cap 9mm, Then Its GAME OVER...
Iam beggining to think that the karambit is a grappling tool

IN OUR DIALECT KARAMBIT IS SOME KIND OF DELICIOUS FOOD,,,,,,,,,,,,,,MIX STIR FRY VEGI....... TNX FOR READING
Knuckle-dust? love it!
Can you make an instruction video on How To Fold The Karambit?
Or, for about half the price, you could carry a Cold Steel Rajah II, or for about the same price, a pocket pistol, or a nice stun gun. Hell, go for broke and get a Taser.

Im a fan of doug but i always giggle at his technique with his arms flailing around lol. I've just never seen it before.
Lol damn you dyslexia for a second i thought the title said scary fake karambit knife

Austen Shiau lol do u want someone do die?

trainers that would leave paint markings as hits
I think the Editor went to lunch and then repeated the bit from 2m:20s again at 2m:40s. Or am I just sleep deprived? Great video though, and Doug is incredible.
If I'm right handed should I use a karambit in my left hand?
Train both sides
That alive hand is so important
Sadly, it's illegal to carry them in germany
Doug is such a fucking badass
Me gustaria q explicara en español
Any precaution in using the ring to avoid breaking my own finger?
deadliy weapon .....by right technic
Never forget your knife in a ninja fight, guns help too lol
That's all well and good, but will it KEEL?
Will the blade stay in place when slashing while the lock is off?
do the kali martial art use leg? something like kicking technique?
But nobody is punching that slow
If the guy against who you are has just a t-shirt, he will suffer when you will deploy the blade on his arm XD
Anyway, very impressive, i like it ;)
Question: how sensitive is that wave feature? Does it NEED clothes to snag, or can you just flick it against anything to open the karambit? For example, your opponent's chin after an uppercut like the one at 4:11 in this video or some other exposed part during a strike (noticed that both guys in the video were wearing long sleeves--what if you both had t shirts on? KPlaysHere I would say it depends on the angle of the wave feature snagging spike and also the sharpness/ pointiness. If for whatever reason one decides to sharpen it to a pencil tip’s sharpness then yeah I would say it will catch on a chin. Also, if your opponent has a sharp chin, that helps too. But even if it can catch onto a chin with the factory specs, I wouldn’t recommend doing that in training. Who would want to be hooked on the chin and have a bloody piece of metal spring into his/ her face right? Late response, But that little hook always gets caught on whatever clothing I wear. I cannot carry this knife in my pocket with the clip TOO DANGEROUS.
my question is, can the karambit be forged as a solid blade, or does it need to fold?
Karambit can be fixed blade as well. Normally very small blade the size of your middle finger.
Music sounds hot! lol
4:43 damn he almost sent that guy to the hospital for stitches.
instantly deployable small karambits like this one and the Karambite are the perfect solution for me
now i dont want to use a gun anymore :v
I know this is just for demonstration but it would be more applicable if his training partner was using his other arm also . . . . . . instead of just a single one.
hey GN, how can I get an Instrumental Version of this song by King Reign? any leads or links would be a great help. Thanks much Bro.
I want this knowledge so bad :( o yeah, i don't need it. i have gun :)
2014 motherfuckers :)
no seriously this is awesome.
I'm so tired of watching him go full speed against fake attackers. Lets see it full speed against a determined opponent for once. It seems really movie fake to me
How you can practice with knives against someone unless you go out on the street and pick a fight? he isn't going to cut his students.
Instructor and student both use markers and wear white. This is how real knife training is done. These "Doug" videos are getting old. Bottom line is dont be in a knife fight, there is no winner I don't care how Doug you think you are.

3) I have 11 years of experience of knife fighting with straight knives and I saw a lot of blatant dudes that once distracted and shocked with RUBBER knives move not faster than his mate in the video
4) forget any knife duel: in knife vs knife he try to extend his reach as much as possible as any skilled fighter
"Wow let's see that again!" Lol the last one got me.
I know what i'll be bringing to work next time
Can the training device be used as an impact device in self defense scenario?
Yes it can
Fucking awesome
Dim mak instant death pressure points are within your target range. The videos are on TH-cam & you'll be amazed. The problem is getting your hand into poking & hard striking condition without harming your hand & knuckles. You'll love those.

Great stuff!

Great video, would have been 1000x better without the annoying music... completely unnecessary
KARAMBIT!!!!!!
My advice is Do Not Buy the karambit if you don't get the training knife that comes with it, personally glad I did ;)
Absolutely mind blowing amazing, blade work
I’ve heard those Fox Karambits are total garbage. Anyone have one? How are they?
I like defender because I try my best to save my opponent lives but if I'm in danger killing is possible..life is valuable for me
all very easy when someone leaves a hand out for you to get........................zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
スムーズな動きですね。 鉛筆は削りにくそう。
So what time is it right now ? One O'clock ? Three O'clock ? Or what O'clock ?
a real master 🙌
That Asian guy reminds me of the movie the hunted lol I bet he could kill so many people using a knife
all of Indonesian have this weapon. sorry i cant speak English haha
is it legal to bring a karambit with you ? im from Philippines
Thank you. Very interesting and informative
To anyone: is there any sort of martial arts that specializes in weaponry liike this? if so, can someone tell me the name please.
Then people wonder why i love the Karambit. When you buy a 599 FOX Karambit Knife do you get a training knife too? I'm more interested in impact weapons like a kubotan then slashing weapons.

What about the opponent's free hand?
Everything is showing as if he has a dis functional left hand...😀

The beauty of the Fox trainer is you can achieve this without cutting the other person .( This is explained in the video series.) However,do it with a live blade and the lacerated limb will retract and the other one WILL hesitate. Hesitation in the face of a live blade = failure.
Doug is a great teacher but I feel so disadvantaged with a single-edge Karambit. like what is the point of using the clock system when only one side will cut? the impact of the weapon isn't enough to stun someone rushing you. You're so limited to what you can do compared to having a traditional double edged karambit.
This would constitute 'Assault with a deadly weapon' here in California and if you felt that much threat to deploy just the ring aspect, then that constitutes deploying the blade as you're in fear of your life or great bodily injury.
that is a nice knife and I will get a Karambit but I'm not going to pay $300 for that fox 599.
Hey, why dont u come to mexico city to give us a seminar?
Where is Doug located? What type of classes and how much?
what martial art does he uses
Kali
Doug, I take it that ... knuckle-dusting is pretty much the same as a "gunting"!??!
Someone please help what is the name of the music at 5:11???
Excellent deployment, in a real scenario you wouldn't see it you would be dead or bleeding severely and disarmed, thank you Mr.Marcaida
People seem to focus on the physical combat, but seem to forget that there are two fights that can 'f' your life...the physical altercation and then the legal fight afterwards.
does anyone know where i can buy that style hoodie?
If the other man has a knife are you reaching out like that or do you protect your neck more ? and go limbs and cuts.
