    How I train mine is by putting their poop into the litter box. Every time they poop, I pick up it up and put it in the litter box. After doing it for some time, they’ll eventually find out that the spot with all their poop is where they should poop. Works great and only took mine about 3days to get the hang of it

    This is by far one of the most helpful channels I've been able to find!! I had a guinea pig when i was much younger but I wasn't quite old enough at all to understand and learn what kind of care they actually needed so I made lots of mistakes like housing the poor guy in a store bought cage by himself and having a very unhealthy diet but I really really enjoyed having a guinea pig so now that I'm older and have been able to convince my parents to allow me to have a pair of guinea pigs with them knowing all that goes into them I have been trying to do all the research I can to make sure that I will be educated on how to fully accommodate them in the best way and your channel is a very informative! All of your videos are so great and helpful!

    • @sparklebutterfly5752

      I agree, this is very helpful. I'm looking for a friendly pet that doesn't bite alot due to having small children around but, I want it to be something I don't mind raising. It's either going to be guinea pigs or rats most likely. I'm aiming for guinea pigs because they seem to be the most docile. still debating though.

    I was very concerned about my pigs respiratory tracts, so I installed a washer and dryer dedicated to my guinea pigs. I lined everything with clean non-fragranced bath towels. I changed the towels DAILY and laid new towels. I shook the poop into the trash and washed the towels in hot water with fragrance free laundry detergent and fragrance free dryer sheets. This kept my piggies healthy, I also had them raised off the floor at five feet in a 12 foot by 12 foot pig palace that my dad built. It was completely enclosed for safety. This kept them safe from drafts.

    I used to have a pair. We adopted them as adults from the neighbours who were moving in December. They were eight and seven when they died. Considering what they went through before we got them (fed those peanut shaped hamster pellets that were too big for them to eat, kept in a store bought cage, little water, no fruits or veggies or hay, no floor or lap time, one of them was dropped out the window and broke her leg, which never healed properly and she couldn’t use it for the rest of her life.) I’m impressed and grateful that we got about five years out of them. After we got them, they weren’t spoiled (we wee just well trained)

    I use pine pellets that are made for horse stalls. It is sold at feed stores. It is pine only, no chemicals or dust. I cover it with a light film of alfalfa, also bought from the feed store in big cheap bags. Then I put their orchard hay in one end of the litter box. They sit in it and eat, and poop. I also use it in my ferret's litter boxes. I keep my ferret far away from my guinea pigs, of course.

    Aspen is apparently the only guinea pig-safe wood shaving. Other wood varieties are associated with a number off issues including respiratory and other chronic illnesses. I'd encourage undyed and unbleached paper litters, hay, and fleece.

    Far, far back in the day when I had a guinea pig (co-habiting with a rabbit), we lined the entire cage with wood shavings which is such a mess to clean, and the shavings get everywhere. I had no idea that fleece and potty mats were an option - and that they're washable, too! This revelation actually makes me consider adopting some again, haha.

    Thank you SO much for these videos! Our pigs started out in standard rabbit cages...until I started to watch TH-cam videos about them. Yours were some of the first I watched and I learned so much! They now live in a C&C cage, they get tons of play time, and they are litter trained pretty well! They actually seem like they are happier now and they for sure let me know if I am late on the veggie routine haha! Right now I have a female who was here first and then we added another one that turned out to be a male. So, for now they live with a divider. (the little boy HATES it lol) Again, I appreciate the effort you make to record and share the videos, they really help!

    I trained my piggy after I had him a few mos. he was already going in the corner so that is where i put the box. I bought the large triangular one, i drilled two holes in it, put string thru and tied it to cage. If i didnt do that, the box could get turned over. I put wood bedding inside it (aspen is best for us) and it’s good. I wish they made the sides a little higher bc sometimes he is squatting n not realizing his rear end is sticking over the edge n pees on floor. Lol. *Im here looking for a different box for that reason, and of course to steal any good ideas. 😁 I also hang the water bottle over the box so it doesnt get floor wet. I put hay over the little box and some will fall in it, or i hang it over a food dish, bc just like you, if hay piles up, hr will poop on it. I dont even use fleece, (only a 12” piece to chill on with curtain. The waterproof nylon floor is it. I sweep it and wipe it down. The issues came in when I thought I got a bright idea. Last winter i made a large little box n put his wooden house on top. ( i have to put a heavy slate rock on top or he moves it) It was a big mistake bc I essentially trained him to pee n poop in his house bc he associates the bedding as litter. 😫 I did this bc his cage is so big i didnt want it in my room and its kind of cold where he was. I thought putting lots of bedding in his house would keep him toasty warm. Big mistake. He even started peeing in his little fleece houses too. It has taken a long time to get him where he was before, and it’s almost Winter again and he’s still not right. I used to brag at how he was trained and did like a 95%. ☹️
    I think this is impressive for 4 guinea pigs tho. I see u have those small problem areas. Maybe if u hung the water bottles over your box or food dish to drip in, (those darn leaky bottles) they may not pee there. Or maybe move the main box to that side. It may be worth the try.
    Thanks for video. 🙂

    I gotta comment again to say you did a GRRREAT JOB on the video! I love that you showed the days and how you handle it. I do the same thing I spot clean the litter box and spots in the cage. I have a mite problem so Im not using fleece anymore until I get it under control. So I use puppy pee pads very expensive and now they just started putting that diaper solution that turns to jelly to trap urine so I will be calling them soon for a fyi call.
    I put shavings on top Aspen but I found that is still bothers a couple of them at times so I just use it in the corners of the cage since they are not trained they used to be but now they are not feeling well from mites and I noticed they just go where ever they have to go now. It's weird cuz once the ivermectin is in their system working they are trained again. I thought the mites were gone but nope had to start another round.
    Thank you for the video

    All these Guinea pig videos make feel guilty over the size of my cage 😔
    To be fair tho I let him out daily for 30 to 60m. If i didn't have to watch him it would be more

      Hugo Stiglitz why is he in a small cage

    • @kristall5928
      @kristall5928 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      There cages should be 7 square feet minimum. Though if size is an issue then plenty of floor time and a c and c cage will work

      @Hugo Stiglitz
      Hey there I understand what you mean. These homes on here are amazing.
      Mine (I have got 3 & only recently got them.i kinda adopted them).
      At the momment they are in cages & feel guilty.but I am going to work on making a little pen like these.
      At least you let yours out for a run about,so it's not like your guinea pig is left in the cage all day & night. So don't feel guilty.you give your piggy love.

      Hugo Stiglitz you can buy those dog fences without the floor and make it into a cicle on the grass and put your piggies in it to play.

    hi I know this was years ago but what I do is go to Tractor Supply and they have big bags of pine bedding for horses and other animals so I just get the bedding for $5 and it lasts me a about a month

    • @TeachersPiggyPets
      @TeachersPiggyPets  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The pine was very strong smelling and I was afraid it could possibly give them a URI so I chose the wood burning pellets bc the odor was minimal.

      @@TeachersPiggyPets ok. well Ive been using it for 6 years and all my guinea pigs are ok but I do pick weeds and grass for them every day that might be why they are fine but idk 4 sure. my guinea pigs are free in my room and I do take them outside so they can roam around I don't put them in a cage cuz they don't go far from me and I do watch them and I have dogs and cats they don't bother them well my can might smell them but he won't try to eat them lol.I live in the country so I like the smell of pine and my guinea pigs are all 4-5 years old and they have no health issues so I think it would be ok 4 them as long as they have a healthy diet.

  • @VictorianAngel1

    I bought CareFresh for my piggies and rabbits ... unfortunately a couple of them ate the stuff (and they had never eaten anything that was not food before this) ... one rabbit died and one rabbit and a guinea pig were deathly sick from it ... it was touch and go ... the stuff blocked up their intestines. It was a battle to save the lives of the two that didn't die and I was heart broken at the loss of the one. I wrote the company and told them. They offered to replace my rabbit but so far I have not taken them up on it. This should not have happened. There should be a warning on the packages about it. :(
    I actually already do what you suggest for their litter boxes with paper and pellets but am going to add the treats into the area as you suggested. Thanks.

    • @VictorianAngel1
      @VictorianAngel1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I told them at the time when I called the company that there should be a warning label on the bag ... that was three years ago ... to date I still don't believe they have added one. :(

    Just put a scoop of old soiled litter in the tray, and position the tray where they usually go to the bathroom anyway With that many piggies I'd use a bigger litter tray, like a storage box. They're cheaper too!

    I have a 3 yr old boar I rescued. He showed up at my house with his little suitcase, so how could I turn him away? I use the guineadad fleece liners and treat him like a king. I’ve never tried to potty train him. I sweep daily and change his liner once a week. He goes to the vet once a year for his wellness check.

    What do you do with the used litter? I put mine outside and use it as a compost. Since I only use safe natural bedding over a layer of wax paper, it works great. I remove the wax paper but the hay, wood shavings and poop go into the new compost heap. It will be ready to use in the spring as a soil enrichment for some plantings. I really enjoyed your video and am sharing it with my daughter who has the most adorable 1 year old boar. In fact today, October 1, 2019 is his 1st Birthday!! Love my fourfooted grandpiggy!!🎂💖
