UPDATE: There are 5x300GB and 3x900GB 10k RPM SAS drives, and yes one of them was setup as a spare. Looks like the 900GB drives were not setp yet. There was also a Windows Server 2016 recovery disc in the DVD drive, so presumably they reinstalled it from scratch.

Dual Raid Arrays is pretty common, the odd drive could be a spare, it may even be the boot drive, or like it has failed and had dropped from the array and its probably stuck in a power up cycle.
The battery is the server is for the RAM on the Raid Controller to maintain transactions on the array in power failure situation. You also can get batteries on TPU/TPM security modules too.
This is a low end setup. Bare basics, Just been used as a Domain Controller or Router maybe even a bit of storage.
Very surprising seeing Drives left in it.
Salvage Wise, Fans & PSU are the only decent parts,
Server Fans are an ALWAYS for the parts bin. So bloody powerful for there sidze.
HP Server Power Supply's are excellent quality, alot of people make DIY bench Supply's from them.
The RAM may come in handy, Specially with being ECC RAM.
CPU: ebay or take it to bits.
Motherboard FTW, FTW being "For The Wall"
You could take the RAID section out from the case and use it to make your own Desktop Storage Areay, With a RAID Card that has External SAS and a long SAS Cable.

@@blitzwing1 not really true. For someone interested in setting up a home lab environment for IT, it's still a fairly modern server that will do a good bit of work. Parts are also cheap to beef it up, and it's massively expandable. Can turn it into a pretty nice Proxmox or similar host for very little $$$. It's all in that space/performance/price trade off.

    • @eDoc2020
      @eDoc2020 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

@@blitzwing1 Where these shine is in expandability. Each CPU can handle 384 gigabytes of RAM and you get a gazillion PCIe slots. The included CPU and RAM are worthless but with a 20 core upgrade it will be _way_ faster than a laptop.
I agree that it's current config isn't very good for a storage server. For that use you'd swap out the drive cage and fit 18 3.5" hard drives.

The HP Raid controllers are mega bits of kit.
    Don't try this at work!
During a raid array rebuild (when all of your data is moving across the drives) switch the server off (don't close it down just turn it off) then remove all the drives and reinsert them into different physical positions.
At this point, the unwritten data that did not get to the drives is backed up in cache (backed up by battery or a super cap)
Say grace to the HP Smart Array gods :) then turn the server back on (accept the new array config) the server boots and the raid array flushes the cache to the drives & the rebuild continues.
    Incredible!

HP used to build these in Cypress, Texas even in 2013. I worked on the assembly line for HP servers during high school summers. They were all built to order custom configurations (BTO). I built severs for Facebook, AOL, Stanford and hundreds of other customers. We knew how to build all server models (40 or so). Was a great high school job. Although I haven't worked there, I have heard that many companies don't allow for publicly accessible dumpsters so that people don't buy new stuff (at corporate cost) to then take "old" stuff out of the dumpster. In my environment that hasn't really proved to be true and those dumpsters are a lot nicer so that a lot more of the still usable stuff gets a new life instead of ending on a landfill or at a recycling site. At the dumpster where I work there are usually no super fancy things in there (VGA cables, computers of the floppy drive era, CRTs, etc.) but once in a year or so there is a good chance of finding somewhat decent computers (5+ years, age usually). So it's not like there is expensive stuff getting tossed at a daily basis.

The motherboard, storage back plane, drives, and power supply will likely fetch a decent price if you were to sell them. A lot of IT. Admins run host boxes that are a couple generations behind in their home labs. I specifically know of one person who was looking for a motherboard for the rack variant of this server. He was looking at $250 US for a salvaged board. Hell, when I went to replace the storage back plane in My Dell t420 I think I paid something like $100 for the board.

Not a bad find :-) The drives are 900GB 10K, pretty decent. The one drive which has no LED on is probably configured as a spare drive, it will only fire up when one of the others dies. The card with the battery connected is the RAID controller cache with battery backup (to prevent data loss if you have a write access to the disks while there is a power loss to the server, the raid card will keep the data in the cache and write it to the disks when the server has power again).

      @freibier 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

@@hardscorerockkssss Technically, it does not actually keep the data in the memory of the controller - the battery backup lasts for about two minutes, and during this time the data is written to flash memory on the controller card. Yep, this guy is of a vintage that has some decent resale value. For someone who is still running one of these new parts are way over priced so admins often turn to the secondary market for spares of things like fans, drives, risers, PSus and so on. CPUs and RAM are pretty common but for someone looking to get a bit more life out of their nearly 10yo dual socket mobo w/ only one populated socket, the secondary market is a good way to go. Drives are a bit tricky though, savvy buyers will know these likely have a high power on hour count and may be unwilling to purchase them. I guess that's what "Used" "as is" is for...

One other thing you should explore is iLO. There's an extra ethernet port on the back of those machines, and you can connect over a browser and see all sorts of cool stuff about the machine when it's running (like a view of all the different temp sensors spread across the motherboard, a plot of power consumption over time, etc). There's an iLO option in the BIOS to configure it, and there's usually a pull-out tab on the front of the machine which I think includes the default password if you reset the password for the machine.

Power hog? Your PC probably has higher capacity power supply :).. I recently got used Dell R620 from Amazon. Probably around the same era this server was made. Mine had 2 CPUs almost exactly the same one as this server has. I upgraded the CPUs to 3GHz (20 logical cores each) and 128 GB RAM. I machined high surface area liquid cooling blocks out of copper, got a small motorcycle radiator, four Noctua fans, water pump and designed the circuitry to put it all together (fan speed control, temperature sensor on cooling blocks as well as radiator inlet and outlet). Liquid vs Air cooling is day and night. At 100% utilization (Prime95), I dropped the average maximum core temperature from 80.15 C to 49.80 C... Maximum any core ever got was 53 C and CPUs are rated for 100C... Fans are not even audible in continuous 100% utilization. I'm using the server for running custom AI on my cameras. Of course, it is nothing like having 4-8 GPUs (at $15k each), but costs MUCH less with tolerable performance; ~500ms vs 3.5s doing the same thing in Google Colab and my server, respectively. I would rather have GPU system but thanks to Covid, cryptocurrency mining dickheads and those grown-ass man playing games on PC to no end, it is not easy to find GPUs at MSRP. Everything is 3x the price. Even in ideal pricing, 2 GPU system would have cost around $2000 to put together. My server costed $800 including the upgrades. Now with the Ukraine situation, raw materials for semiconductor production will further strain. The world is going down to shit...

An with the speed control of the fans this thing would be worth investing in an using as a strage server or even a work horse if you upgrade the cups. Unlike slot of stuff today that thing can be left on 247 an asuming wendows dosent brick it self it will run happy doing that. Like the old Dell demention series computers.

Does anyone here have experience with using these models? I have one, but having trouble with mine, and would love some help or advice!
I’ve been planning to upgrade the CPUs and do some other tweaks, and finally got around to spending some time on the machine. I went to all of the trouble of upgrading the CPU’s, only to realised BEFORE i do this, i have to run an update ISO prior to doing this. I admitted defeat, and replaced the older CPU’s in the server, to begin the process of properly upgrading the CPU’s, the way HP wants… :face_exhaling:
On restarting the Server, it posted with RAM an CPU, then proceeded with:
    1611 -Fan 1 Missing
    1611 -Fan 2 Missing
    1611 -Fan 3 Missing
    1611 -Fan 4 Missing
    Fan Solution Not Sufficient
Critical Failure Detected - System Shutting down in 5 Seconds!
Now, on a bit of research (not that it was required, really…) obviously the error is pointing out that the iLO (Intelligent Lights Out , HP’s IPMI) hasn’t detected any of the 4 fans, and has shut down to stop overheating.
Many have posted this, but usually only pertaining to having 1 fan not being detected.
My case, ALL fans are not detected. The fans are, however, On, spinning, and the 4 fan lights on the MB are all lit up with a GREEN LED.
I’ve tried cleaning the contacts, swapping fans, even resetting the NVRAM… to no avail.
Does anyone know of what is happening? Have i missed something? Should i roll back the BIOS? is there anything else i can do, other than buy a replacement montherboard?
It just seems odd that all of a sudden ALL fans aren’t recognised, when before they were all working fine.
Appreciate any help here guys… thanks in advance!

Fans sound near as bad as my Zen 3 AMD system..... Those hard drives are SAS drives and need a SAS controller to work they will not work on a SATA controller. By the specs of that system it was a network attached fast storage server with 4 Ethernet ports and one out of band Ethernet port for maintenance/other work on the system Those Xeons can fetch a decent amount of pennies to the right buyer at the right time generally Gamers buy old multi core Xeons to build bargain basement gaming rigs and that card with the battery would of been a cache type card for the SAS Raid array for a power outage to keep the memory alive when it shut down and when the system starts back up it then writes that data to the drives as that is its fail safe guard.it looked like Windows 10 was its OS but I could be wrong there usually your the man with all the info for us to nerd out on but I work a bit with servers something that age that amount of ram single CPU definitely just a glorified enterprise level NAS hope that helps Dave my friend. My Ivy Bridge core i5 I use as a Linux server with a hypervisor to virtualise as a firewall too has 12GB Ram and 2 4TB Drives in it for my NAS system and firewall soon to configure the web and email server on it but running Slackware 15 and virtualbox I very seldom go over 3GB so I have over kill for ram even with samba running for the file share and smoothwall as my firewall any how you got a great find there some stingy gamer would cream themself over that Xeon but yeah if you want to use those SAS drives there are SAS PCIE controllers out there if you want to get one to use the drives.

IIRC the drives on those arrays have light pipes, worth checking those? I've worked with those servers for years and they've always provided excellent service either in the tower form or the rack units the boards are excellent and you get years of service out of them however they are thirsty for any sort of home use unless you really wanted them. I got myself a nice little HP Microserver Gen8 for home, the router sits on top and they're lovely little 'lab units' for this and that. Nice find but just parts I'd say. Thanks for the video Dave I got a kick out of this! (edit: now that I think about it maybe it was the earlier gen drives with the light pipes but it's been a while)

E5-2620 is pretty weak and worthless but with an firmware upgrade you could put Xeeon E5-26xx v2 series CPU in there for relatively decent performance. And of course making use out of the whole quad channel RAM. The non lighting up disk has probably burned out diode. Or maybe is configured as a spare.
