I wonder if the businesses in your building look for old stuff to dump and take an internal office vote to see what they'll leave for "our local eevblog bloke" then watch teardowns of their old office equipment at some monthly office party bash.

Dells won't charge from an HP cord. There's a 1wire communications to a chip that if it doesn't detect the correct Dell chip with the wattage, it goes into slow mode and refuses to charge but will boot.

Yup I had the same problem with a Latitude. One caution, the center pin on the power adapter plug is the data pin. If you try and probe there is a high probability of shorting the center pin to to the inside sleeve which is at a high voltage. This will burn out the serial rom in the power module. Ask me how I know.

Reasons why Dave is the analogous form of Director Taika Waititi for electronics tutorial videos:
    1) Every production video is based on idea and executed without script.
    2) The end result is entertaining without fail.
    3) Humour and emotions are always present.

You could probably just install an mSATA in that WWAN-port next to the WiFi card. Standard port, and you won't have to look around eBay for an hdd caddy for this particular machine. Also, you need to use a Dell charger. Dell laptops refuses to charge at all with HP chargers, even though the plug is exactly the same - the same vice a versa HP laptops won't charge with a Dell charger. They will however power on, as you see.

Sometimes 'in theory' you can put a better CPU in the same socket, but with a lot of lower end big box motherboards they do not have sufficient power regulation for the wattages as well as BIOS support for the cpu. You are usually good to put anything on a ASUS board. I have an acer one here with a i5 650 and I'd like to put a i7 on it but nah, no voyage.

Ok so it seems wise to do a shake test before switching on tossed equipment because there might be some loosey goosies dancing around in them.

e-sata is actually USB with no power. You can plug in a powered USB hub to the e-sata port to get more USB ports if you need them.

Errr, no, it's eSATAp, which is eSATA with USB - which means with power.

No it isn't. SATA is a completely different interface to USB. There _are_ USB/eSATA combo ports but that still doesn't mean eSATA is USB.

I don't know what's your problem with Dell desktops, our company uses almost solely Dell PCs with very low failure rates, a lot of them are OptiPlex 380 from 2010 and still going strong, some HDD failure mostly in those which run 24/7, but mostly trouble free. We had capacitor failures starting in ~2015 on motherboards from the earlier OptiPlex 360 series from ~2006, but no such problems with the 380s from 2009-2011 yet.
Oh, and my laptop at work is a Dell Latitude E5500 from 2009, still going strong, built like a tank, it's heavy and thick as hell, but survived several drops without any issues. And it was a very cheap business laptop in 2009. That price category is very flimsy now (not just from Dell), non-replacable batteries in everything, usually intergated RAM with maybe one expansion slot, and you can lift one corner of the laptop from the desk up to an inch, while the other three corners are still on the desk... With this E5500, you could possibly slap someone to death, and still use it afterwards.

Yep. I don't get it either. Had great runs out of Dell. I can only remember one Dell desktop that had main board failure at 9 years old so nothing unusual. Others still going. I even have my Pentium 3 laptop. Booted it for first time in a few years the other day, perfect.

I don't get it either. My organisation had over 10,000 Dell machines. A few average spec models here and there but Dell was the only supplier who ever met the tender specification requirements.

We also have many DELL machines at work, and the failure rate is significantly lower than on the few lenovo (and also some others like HP) machines we have. And if there is a failure, the Pro Support fixes the issue within 24-48h
