Yooo this is so refreshing to hear. "Never allow yourself to be bullied or persuaded into scanning a patient that you have concerns about. If in doubt, postpone the examination." -MRI In Practice
That nurse almost seemed like she wanted to get you in trouble lol. I think she knew what she was doing. She knows there are protocols but it's on you so she dont care
She may not know the procedures in Radiology but she can’t tell you how to do your job, just as we can’t tell her how to do hers. Patient safety & MRI safety is very important!
Just finishing up my first year in a rad tech program. I've chosen MRI as my modality and am stoked to start that program asap! Thanks for the video, I love researching this field.
I’ve worked in Radiology for over a decade. It still amazes me how other healthcare professionals (and patients, for that matter) think they know our jobs better than we do.
A while back I remember my cousin, she’s a nurse tell me about a situation involving an MRI. The patient’s records had a mistake on it ordering the patient to get an MRI. The man couldn’t get one because he had a pacemaker. So hence my cousin was looking the records over. Had she not realized that he had a pacemaker something horrible could have happened. Mistakes and errors happen a lot in a hospital, it’s always good to keep a sharp eye out on the job.
Hey MRI Man, thank you so much for making videos. I come from a similar journey to being a MRI tech. Went to MRI school and now working the past 2 months. The most stressful part for me is 15 minute time slots and 30 minutes for Abdomen scans. So easy to fall behind
Thanks for watching! Im sorry ur in that system! Its all abt money in these private imaging centers. Your not alone I been there. We would get behind and it was soo stressful. But my advice is make sure u get the scan correct. If you get behin do to patient care soo be it. Its not your fault
in the same boat, it helps check the schedule the day before ur shift so you wouldn't be surprised. Have ur reception tell patient to come 15mins early to fill paperwork and scheduling a spine or brain no contrast after ur abdomen scan, can help you catch up on time .hope this helps!
Then the radiologist calls you and asks"why are you so behind?"...What the hay??? I had claustrophobic patients, the patients didn't change correctly or left all their metal on, the software crashed, The patient moved, I had to repeat the series...must I go on? LOL!
Those are tricky situations. Staying calm is key. Patients hardly ever have MRI cards. I have only seen three or four for devices. I am trying to get my ARRT passed off. Those Abdomens man!
Hey MRI man thank you so much for making videos! One been wanting to go to school for MRI for a while and your insight has helped me realize I am going for it. How about a video on different types of MRI machines and how they are used?
As a Technologist, you are constantly told that you are the "Gatekeepers", to stay on schedule, YOU are expected to....'make it happen'. If you get by. All good. If not, YOU go under the bus. Remember that, besides a possible tragedy happening, which is bad enough, YOU go under the bus. A referring doctor may complain specifically about you, even if the mistake is theirs. (I've contacted referring doctor's offices to find that the receptionist, their wife...often, wrote the Rx...STATIC! Apparently marrying a doctor, wearing a lab coat, and working the phones and desk at a doctor's practice makes you a doctor.) THIS is what it's like being an MRI tech.
True , soo often it comes.to us talking to some random receptionist at a ref docs office, who gives us a verbal ok to change the scan. Soo many wrong orders and some much time wasted on calling to change them as a tech.
So the obvious is scanning patients. But other than that. What are you doing before, after and in-between scanning. Like what are your other duties? If any. What paper work are doing? Do you transport patients? Are there duties that you do, You didn't expect to do when getting into this career? What else do you do as an mri tech or is it just really pretty chill?
Here Here! It can be difficult not to cave in to the pressure...how about when they bring ferrous pens in?!?! I had a scary moment in a small community hospital when I worked on a mobile MRI. They sent me an inpatient that had a pacemaker. Thank my lucky stars that because the patient was slightly confused...(this was in 1990), I insisted on seeing their admission chest xray. I saw a pacemaker, my heart dropped, I could have seriously injured or killed that patient if I would have given in to the pressure of get em in and out. I scan companion animals now, It's a different set of challenges...when I scanned humans...in the 80's and 90's I had a patient that had magnetic dentures! What a surprise. Great job, you are new and building protocols, where did you train? I am in NY and I have been doing MRI since 1988, MRI contrast was newly created:) I'm an oldie but I hope still a goodie. Nice to hear that you are so responsible and intelligent. Your patients are lucky!
I've been an x-ray tech for the last 6 years and I'm finally ready for a new modality. Found an online course, but my hospital isn't affiliated so in the mean time I'm watching TH-cam and dusted off my old cross sectional anatomy book. Wish me luck

Appreciate the insight. I am curious about what your hours are like, do you work nights? Do you work 4 days a week? Do you alternate between nights and days?
Whats up! Thanks for watching and commenting. I work 4 10hr shifts and usually get off at 5pm or 6pm. I never worked nights! Iam currently at a outpatient center
@@MRIMan No worries, I really appreciate these videos I’ve watched quite a few already, you’re the man! Interesting, I have spent 5 years working with people as I spent 2 at McDonald’s and 3 at a casino dealing cards. I’ve been in many high pressure situations working with people and I feel like this job is for me. I was definitely curious about your hours because I have always felt like 4 10 hour shifts would give me a much better quality of life than 5 8 hour shifts.
Hi I’m also in my 40s and need to start something with my life since my current job is stressing me out giving me high blood pressure with low pay. I want to start school and go from there. Please let me know if you already starting school and how much is the price for schooling? I have enough $ save up. How much do I need and how long will the whole program takes? Thanks again
Our radiologists can be such dicks when bringing these situations up to them! Like wtf ? I need help and need their help to clear them. They are so grumpy.
Hey. Thanks for the video. I really hope you see my comment and help me out. I graduated with a diploma in Aircaft Maintenance in 2012 and long story short, the wages and job security in aviation industry suck, so I am looking to change career paths and get into either MRI, Radiology or CT scan. Questions I have are: Firstly, do I need a background in nursing/any other healthcare related study, Secondly, How many years and how much money can I expect to spend on these programs, and Thirdly, how stabe and secure is the job market in these fields.
Hi, thanks for watching my videos. You don't need any backround healthcare. For a private school like the one I went to , your looking at 30,000$ 2 year program. Easy to find jobs as the demand for tech is growing every year!
@@MRIMan Actually, jw, my college offers MRI certification as just two additional semesters to those who are already certified radiographers. Is MRI a competitive position even with certification? Do hospitals make it difficult for people who want to continue their education? It just doesn’t make sense why anyone would go and study for two years and then just not finish one extra year to learn a bit more about the body and a few extra skills, and for what appears to be higher status and like double the pay. I have a distant relative who is also a radiographer, but for some reason never got certified in anything else. I don’t see why anyone would want to just stay a radiographer. Also, is it possible to work part time? I heard they’re weird about that and try to get people to work as many hours as they possibly can
MRI Man, it's George, one of your OG's! Hope all is well, I'm in a bit of a dilemma and was looking for some advice. I've been a tech for about a yr now, been watching your videos since I was still in MRI school. Im currently working at 2 different sites, both are chill af, and making decent money in between both jobs. My dilemma is this, I don't mind working at 2 different sites, in between both sites, I do get my 40 hrs a week, however, it's so hard to find a place that's willing to pick you up full time. I'm debating weather or not to go back to school and get a degree in medical management and try to get into the administrative side of radiology. I'd appreciate it if you could drop some advice on your next video. Thanks again, Im out! ✌✌
I agree I work at 2 different sites as well! It is tiring for me because both sites are completely different. I also drive 45min or 1hr+ to either site. The pay is good though. I can go back to a imaging center which is 15min from me but way lower pay and more work haha. Well look into what management does. My radiology manger looks over about 40 employees. Also doesn't scan at all. Id becareful going full management because you will lose all your skills . I think you should get atleast 2 year experience. But management is cool as long as it fits you. My manger deals with interviewing employees, having several meetings , visiting sites, handling call outs ect. You should ask how your manager or management how they truly feel about there job.
I'm positive that this whole situation could've been solved cross-referencing other imaging. And if there's a hospital in this world that doesn't do CT for stroke well before MRI, that whole neuro team has got to go. My suggestion to other MR techs: cross-reference ALL available imaging. Esp if you have Epic, start looking into reports from other facilities, too. There's almost always more than one way to scan a cat. Also, per neuroradiology, if you can determine the clips or coils are new by seeing none on older imaging, the statement was correct in the video: ALL new clips and coils in the US are aluminum and safe, but the susceptibility artefact is bonkers and makes the scan kinda not worth it for FISP, FLAIR, and...you guessed it: Diffusion. So not worth it for stroke.

MRI Man If I receive my AS In Radiology Technology, do you suggest gaining experience and working on the field as a X Ray technician before pursuing an MRI program? I’ve also heard there’s quite a wait for some community colleges to accept applicants in RT around 2-3 years, is it worth the wait or should I look towards a 2 year program from a ARMRIT and take an externship for my ARRT license as I believe you have? Last question haha sorry
King Vortex Definitely, I want to get to work as soon as possible, I’m about 1 hour away from Casa Loma College where MRI Man attended, it’s either that or just waiting it out at a community college. +Jesus Hernandez not sure about Colorado. California has school in the bay area and LA county. You need to search for schools that ARRT certified. Maybe check the ARRT website and search schools.
Hey Jesus I am also in Colorado and and currently going to CCD for pre request and hoping to join their radiology program soon. There is no schools in CO that will only do MRI I have done my research.
@@MsChivas92 I agree! I’ve looked and unfortunately we can’t just jump into the MRI school. I’m currently in the hiring process for a police position and if that doesn’t fall through I will be applying to the UCHealth school. I’m in Colorado Springs. I wish you the best! 😁
+Richard B I went to a school specified for mri. Its called casa loma college in socal. Its a AA degree program. You could also goto a community College and become a radiology tech first.
jacyah jones usually community colleges offer associate degrees in radiology! So if you get into a community college you can register for their radiology degree program. +Jonathan Monzon You'll be able to get a job forsure. ARRT is great! that's all that really matters about the school. If they have that ARRT than they are legit. The job market for MR is growing every year and thats a fact.
Hi I am trying to go to MRI program at High Desert college. But I don’t know if it’s correctly accredited like the school you went too. Plz help😢
how long did it take you too pay off your loan

Whats up MRI Man! I have been looking into this field and am wondering if you have any recommendations for schools in california?
If ur in socal , I recommend casa loma college or west coast ultrasound. They have great MR programs!
@@MRIMan I am in SoCal! Thank you. Im glad to have run into your channel.
Do you have to take call? That’s the hardest part for me.
+Aimesco1183 no I do not!

@@MRIMan thats a great question.
I can type a little. And mouse some ( hard to quantify how much that is )
Much less than all day. Its one of the things that has me so interested in MRI.
It appears to not have much typing and computer use
Would you agree?
In an hour, how much computer use would you have?
On a side note, I've seen a ton of your videos, they are very helpful!!

Are you an RT? If not, is there a disadvantage to only being MRI certified and not RT
I’m trying to find a school to jump into MRI instead of X-ray tech. I’m in Colorado and haven’t been able to find anything. Any suggestions on how to obtain the MRI license?
+Jesus Hernandez not sure about Colorado. California has school in the bay area and LA county. You need to search for schools that ARRT certified. Maybe check the ARRT website and search schools.
@@MRIMan thank you
Hey Jesus I am also in Colorado and and currently going to CCD for pre request and hoping to join their radiology program soon.
Do you gotta take some kind of radiology classes before goin into mri classes?
+Richard B I went to a school specified for mri. Its called casa loma college in socal. Its a AA degree program. You could also goto a community College and become a radiology tech first.
With a associates degree in radiology can you become a mri tech
Yes you can. Mite be the best way to go actually
@@MRIMan Thank you so much
MRI Man how do you get in tho ? Does the college offer it or do you have to go search into a program yourself?
jacyah jones usually community colleges offer associate degrees in radiology! So if you get into a community college you can register for their radiology degree program. If this doesn’t work for you, you can also search up online programs that offer radiology degrees by completing online courses. hope that helps!
What do you like most about the job?
+FlyHigh_Mamba Helping patients!. Being part of the process of making someone better or even saving their lives. I feel like iam helping my community
Where did you go to school? Can we do any part of schooling online.
I'm a single mom that's why I ask.
Nvm just saw the video for schools lol
@@mommaof1337 cool if u have any questions y oi u can email me mritechlife@gmail.com
🥺
Is Mri harder than Xray school?
+India Cunningham I would think it is
@@MRIMan I got accepted for Rad tech and MRI programs at my college. Is it easier first to do Xray? I feel xray will be good start first too see if I can handle it.
Xray is a great start.
was schooling hard?
It was challenging because I had to work full time and have a family. Physics was hardest for me. It took some dedication
what was your school schedule like? like what classes did you have to take? i’m considering an mri career but in order to do so i have to come back for an extra year of high school to finish off my bio and physics, so idk if the career’s worth the time 😔
Physics was sooo hard for me to grasp! Still is 7 years later.
