The Leviathan has become a Rotten Tomb! What was it like before this though?

- The Leviathan now hangs above the moon and is linked to Nezarec's Pyramid ship, but long before this it was Emperor Calus' pleasure barge, a golden palace of opulence and excess. Now it has been infested with the Nightmares from the Moon and with Egregore, a fungus with properties linking it to the Darkness.

This was honestly one the best seasonal stories for me. Even the location with its daily activities were good.
I dunno, even back then the seasonal story was super repetitive. One week it's "Oh, X-character is sad/upset and can't confront the memory of past person" followed by the next week being "X-character has found the strength to let go and overcome the phantom memory haunting them". Sure, seeing the Leviathan caked in egregore was awesome, but we didn't get any cool mechanics from it like the Glykon mission. The whole setup of Calus merging with his ship and trying to merge with a Pyramid was really cool too, but then Lightfall reduced him to a bucket-hat wearing glittery boy instead of some dark, terrifying emperor who forsook his physical body in pursuit of more and more power. Went from a rotting, decrepit, diseased, pale thing charged with immense power and hunger to just another fat Cabal with a big gun.
The corrupted, rotting, Leviathan, really was a smart way for the writers to reflect/symbolize, the festering, abhorrent, ugly, monster Calus was behind all the glamor and elegant oppulence. Peel all the gold and ivory away, and an atrocious, rotting monster was all that remained. By the midnight coup, Calus was slipping, by the time he’d became a Disciple, he was gone. The Witness took what was left of his rotten soul, in exchange for power as a Disciple. The greedy, power-mad emperor made a deal with the devil.

I have a completely different experience with it, but that's probably because I started playing D2 during Season of the Haunted. I just remember being a confused new light who just finished the opening quest, and was thrown into Savathun's throne world and then at the Leviathan.
I remember being confused why it was a big deal for the Hive to have the light (since there's no backstory) and why Calus' return was such a huge problem. It's already bad that I got thrown into a spoiler content without any prerequisite knowledge, but they had to throw me into two of them. So my memories of that season is mostly comprised of me playing the Nightmare event over and over again while listening to Byf's videos in the background. And it wasn't a pleasant experience at all. I immediately found D2's story experience in the game to be really bad.
If you think about it. It would've been a nice distraction for Calus and his forces to ram this thing into earth while they're in invading Neomuna.

Something tells me this will happen like the Almighty. I feel as though Calus’. mind is still there or at least fragments. The Egregore ferry memories and that ship is infested with forests of the fungus and dead scorn.

Story reasons aside, what would happen to Duality if it did? Honestly I'm not trying to give Bungie any more reasons to sunset content for the sake of lore.
When I started Destiny 2, my first clan took me to Leviathan for the first raid The Underbelly, I was fascinated by the Royal architecture, truly Majestic
Now seeing this vessel rotting inside out, is sad

You too?? The raid was my first experience and I loved the Gold engravings and whote as opposed to the industrial military structures the Cabal use. despite my brother playin the Red War on my account I never picked it up.
I hope the Leviathan returns as a proper destination, either where we explore the depths of previous raids and unexplored regions, or completely ruined as it crashes into some other planet
Or bring back the Leviathan Raid.

wish we could still visit, so cool to see the ship transformed and patrol the areas we fought in and learn more about during Haunted
I really wish they’d kept it as a patrol zone after they took the season out at least. They could’ve easily had it as a part of Lightfall where you need to infiltrate the ship for an exotic mission or added a vendor to the location like a scavenger who sells missions that you can do to get the old raid weapons (though of course since it looks like they’re doing that with into the light it’s not something that really matters anymore). Could’ve had us revisit old raid locations similar to how you get weapons on the moon.
Still one of my favorite places in Destiny
Season of the Haunted and Season of the Witch were probably the most Badass and Heartfelt

I still have no idea why Calus chose to just take the typhoon imperator over upgrading the leviathan with pyramid tech, which would have been the clear superior option.
To be fair, the writers probably just wrote the Leviathan off the story cause they realized how dangerous the ship is HAHAHAHA Calus could've simply rammed that thing into earth and we'll have no time to help Neomuna. It's just way too OP if you think about it. And with Rasputin's warsats gone, we won't really any means to destroy it just like how Rasputin destroyed the Almighty.
Because the Leviathan is a derelict vessel. He didn’t have control over it after he made his connection with the witness. So he abandoned the ship which he was stuck on as a prison. It’s not really a superior option because how would the Leviathan be upgraded by pyramid tech? The black fleet wasn’t in our system at that point. Instead he abandoned his previous self and then embraced the Witness’ power and became a disciple.
Except the black fleet WAS in our system. In Season of Arrivals, they took Mercury, Mars, Io, and Titan and left anomalies in their place. Calus took the Leviathan into the anomaly in Mercury's place and vanished prior to this season. That's the same anomaly the Glykon came out of in Season of the Chosen. That's why both of those ships have egregore growth on them.
@@theweebking6748 the black fleet wasnt in our system at the time. when the pyramids took the planets and left the anomalies in their wake at the end of arrivals, that was when the traveler reformed and pushed them back to the edge of the system.

It reminds me a lot of Dark Souls, and how Anor Londo was a golden city of sunlight but after we defeat Gwyndolin it shows how dark and rotted the city has become
Considering the mass of the leviathan itself, let alone that one statue of Calus MADE OF NEUTRON STAR MATTER I gotta wonder if its playing hell with tidal patterns back on earth

Many horrid abominations he’s created, and abhorrent atrocities he’s committed, is what’s defined his legacy since he’s died. But the dead, rotting Leviathan, is probably the biggest, ugliest stain he left on Sol. Behind all that shiny glamor, and oppulent splendor, Calus was ugly on the inside, as he was on the outside. The Witness took what was left of his soul, as the darkness does-one must take power. Calus tool what he’d always desired, but the Witness took his soul in return. The foul horrid stains he’d left on the system, like the Nightmares and Taken, will not go away so easily. His legacy will be a festering stain for years to come, it may take years, decades, to cleanse his mark from Sol.
It hurts to see what the Leviathan (and Calus himself) became. Levi was my first ever raid in destiny and is in my opinion the second most beautiful raid area in the game, with garden as the first. Calus used to be my favorite npc, and i miss his joyous attitude from the old voice lines a lot. Calus's Selected remains my top shader choice to this day.

A lot of people aren't very interested in the lore, but I love it when a game has a lot of deep lore it makes the game almost feel real.
FR. Now, if only Destiny 2 didn't do Sunsetting and seasonal stories that are only accessible during that season. I played D2 during Season of the haunted, and right after the opening mission I was thrown into Savathun's throne world and then to the Leviathan. If it wasn't for channels like Byf, you'd never really be able to know what the heck is happening in D2.
@allentayoto7387 Yeah, sadly, I started this season, so I missed out on a lot of lore. My clan helps me out when I'm confused, but byf is the one I go to for general lore. I just hope that there's going to be something similar to the skimmer for next year's guardian games, I was completely unprepared, and it doesn't help that people spam nightfalls even after they got it already. At this point, it's too late for me to get it with any one of the three options, and that has me a little upset because the skimmer reminds me so much of a skateboard and I skate in real life so I was super excited when I found out they had it. I was then super disappointed when I found out that if you don't get the 10% almost immediately after the reset, your chances as a low power level character plummets to near zero percent of even getting in the top 50%.
And is funny how gold neither rust and it cannot be tarnished, but because of the different influences that the Leviathan got with the Pyramid and the Nightmares it started to lose its value, its beauty you could say, like showing how bad things are
In Elise's original timeline, Mara put together her own coalition with the Leviathan serving as her flagship. Giving that Elise says that certain elements from her future could still play out but within different circumstances, I've been hoping that our Coalition would cleanse the derelict and appropriate it for ourselves
I love how the Leviathan is the equivalent of the Destiny franchise.
A regal Palace (Destiny 1) turned into a rotting Corpse of a Palace (Destiny 2).
Season of the haunted was one of my favorite seasons it was so good and the solar update was the best part (I love solar)
To be fair it was always rotten if you stare closely at the old leviathan. Stuff wasn’t looking too prestige.
Thank god for these lore videos. I started playing Destiny when Beyond Light came out, definitely a rough time to pick up the game 😅 These videos have really helped me get into the game this year, answering questions I had or filling me in on information before I reached points where that info would be relevant, that way I wasn't coasting through the game feeling clueless. I had taken a screen shot of the Leviathan so I could ask my friends who got me into the game what it was that I was looking at. Thanks for all the helpful shorts 👍

To be honest, if it wasn't infested with Egregore and nightmares, we could use that thing as bugout ship with enough room to house everyone in the city on it, seeing as Dead Orbit and the other factions peaced out.
Then again, Calus had statues made of radioactive metals, so radiation poisioning... and all the other stuff that will kill you...

Nope. BUT I do remember Byf mentioning in a video before that in Torabatl, there are actually huge sandworm-like creatures that the Cabal called Leviathan. So, Byf theorized that those creatures may be the source of the ship's name.
Since we now know that the Leviathan in the book of sorrows is probably just a proto-worm like Ahsa. There really isn't any similarities between Ahsa's appearance and the ship's appearance. So it can't be named after the Leviathan from the Book of Sorrows.
This is why I loved Season of The Haunted, the Leviathan Raid was my first ever raid completed and always had some type of something in my heart. I do however wish that they never got rid of the Seasonal Location, couldn’t get the triumph title because I couldn’t find those nightmares with a chance of spawning, nor was I skilled enough to do it solo 😂
This was one of my favorite seasons. An open place to wander, enemies and encounters. This was the only title I’ve gotten.
Would be a shame if one of us smuggled some Egregore

It sucks that there are so many new lights that don't know the Leviathan from year 1. Us veterans can only live to tell the tale of such an amazing og raid...
And it has become an even more hollow tomb now that Calus and The Witness are dead. I am VERY curious to see what happens with it in the future

Ah despite the fungal overgrowth and some haul sections being rearranged die to being in an anomaly, I'm sure it's still functional enough to fly, i mean it hasn't crashed into the moon or earth by gravity.
With enough cleaning and a deep look under the hood, I believe it can sail among the stars again (probably won't get the smell out though...)

I am so sick of bungie removing stuff from the game. It is still there, the file size hasn’t gone down. They just cant let us play content we enjoy and i cannot respect that. They sunset so much that we all payed hundreds of dollars to play. Quit taking activities and planets/patrol zones away from us

Do we know what the connection to the darkness the fungal growth has? Like what is it’s purpose is?
All we really know is that the Egregore is a manifestation of Darkness similar to Stasis and Strand. But Eris Morn described it as "not pure". Byf had made some speculations before too that the Egregore seems to grow around places where the Veil have influence. BUT so far, we don't really know what it is.
We do know its purpose. IIrc, in one of the lore books during Season of the Haunted, Eris Morn did some experiments with it and realized that it can sort of create a connection through its mycelium network for the mind. It connected the Leviathan, the Glykon, and the pyramids in Luna and Europa. Calus also used it in an attempt to merge his consciousness with the Lunar Pyramid. So think of it as like wires that can connect your consciousness to something far away from you.
