I have seen Pink Floyd 4 times. I met David Gilmour in 1984 back stage at a concert in Hollywood Calif. He gave me a signed album that I have in my music room. We talked for 22 minutes. I called him…“The Master Of The Stratocaster” He smiled. I asked if I could shake both his hands that make such great guitar solos, he smiled bigger and said “Sure” and shook both hands at the same time, making a cross between us, I smiled HUGE. I asked him to describe his technique of playing guitar, he replied… “I strike a note, bend it, shake it and then release it”…. Yes, he does that quite well, better than any other guitarist I know.

This is a very good review of probably the best guitar solo ever heard! Thank you.Gilmore blows my mind. I’m a 66 year old woman, and listening to his playing, transports me to the stars. I’m guessing, it’s like being high on a drug, but without any drug. I’ve not taken a single recreational drug in my lifetime, but I should image the feeling is the same listening to this glorious solo. Again thank you. Caroline, north London.

Gilmore must have known something about physiological responses to certain tonalities and rhythms when he composed those two guitar solos. Even as a former guitarist, (broken hand last October has left behind nerve damage 😢), playing this masterpiece would leave me shaken. No, I was not a virtuoso, but technically, this song is accessible to an experienced intermediate level guitarist (I played for 60 years before I got hurt). I'm delighted that you mentioned the drummer as well, he looked like he was about to levitate straight to heaven during this monument to all music!! 😇😁🤓

I was fortunate enough to see David Gilmour on this tour. He was showcasing his new album at the time, 'Rattle That Lock' (which I also enjoy) but the Pink Floyd classics are just on another level. He was 70 years old in 2016 and as you can tell, he still sounds amazing! The bass player in this concert, Guy Pratt, is the same player as in the Pulse concerts with Pink Floyd (he was only in his 30s back then. I think it's cool that he continues to perform with the members of Pink Floyd on their solo ventures). If you want to react to more of David Gilmour's solo shows, I suggest checking out the song 'In Any Tongue,' also from this David Gilmour Pompeii concert or 'On An Island' featuring Crosby and Nash (from 2006).

That's probably the best analogy of David's style I've ever read. Well put! He is technically the best I've ever seen, such precision and flawless. I've played acoustic for over 42 years, not professionally but for the love of it. Watching David is such a gift. And the way he plays, just watching it, the difficulty level is unattainable. Sure you could play the chords, and learn the song. But only he knows how to get the sound he produces. A pure Magician!

I agree 100%. This is better. And in 5 years, he might be in his 80s…. And I have no doubt in my mind that it will be even better. His fingers may not move as fast, but he will compensate by making every note he can play be even more emotional.
I used to listen to a lot of old school southern blues musicians. They were recorded by archivists way past their prime, to put them on record. But I can’t imagine that they sounded better when they were younger. They were recorded as older dudes. Many or them were not in the best of places. Financially, some had drug and alcohol issues, at a minimum none of them had been properly compensated for their music at that time. But some random historians felt it was important to document their music while they were still alive and that is amazing. Not sure where I was going with this. Maybe to say that there is wisdom that comes with age, and that can come across in music.

I saw an interview on TV with an American musician and he swore Gilmour was among the best guitarists ever and one of the reasons was that he did not fill every note with sound. He said that most musicians were frightened of leaving spaces in their music and Gilmour regularly leaves whole note size spaces in his music in the knowledge that the mind will use that space and fill it in. It also allows room for all the musical layers provided by the other musicians.

And what about that light show!! Cosmic.
Pink had me at Ummagumma, long before they got popular with Dark Side of the Moon. One of my earliest grade school purchases, circa '70. I was flipping through records, and saw it sitting there, all awash in grooviness and a cool display of their equipment, and I couldn't resist. I was InstaProgressive Man from that point on, and gathered records by Pink, ELP, Yes, Genesis, Strawbs, Renaissance, Moody Blues, King Crimson, and other mostly British bands that thought with the tops of their head, and the depths of their soul. This song relates to humans being sleeping automatons; a complex system of levers, living in a Kafkaeque nightmare of numbness.

David has certainly matured well. Nobody can bend the strings like this. I don't know which other version you were referring to, but if it's the Pulse concert then I say it's on par, but not better

no, no 40 notes in a second, Gilmour tends to play one note, and he will bend, stretch and shake that one note for 40 seconds!!! And it is the best note one will hear, imo. What Mr. Gilmour does with one note, for the length of time he 'distorts it', is more than most guitarists do with the whole fret. Again, just my opinion. But I was born in 1960 and have heard (and got to see live) most of the 'great' guitaists that came out of that era, which I still believe to be the best rock music EVER , the 70s.

He’s never been one to play wild, fast solos. He’s more rhythmic, and precise.
He is one of a kind, and sits above the rest.

He has said that he knew he would never be the fastest guitar player so he figured out that he would have to touch you in a different way. From meddle on I have loved the music he produces. I was fortunate enough to see pink floyd in Munich in 1977. They played, wish you were here, animals and a lot of dark side of the moon for an encore. When I listen to Floyd it's like I don't hear the music or lyrics. For me it's like I'm receiving everything telepathically. I feel ever word and note, I experience it more than just hearing.

I played drums nearly 27 years from young man around 10 in 80s early til 05,..then a couple sit in gigs. I moved after Katrina hurricane lost everything. I wound up returning to music teaching my son keys and Guitar as I knew only a little of each. Then when he moved and grad in 2017 I took a year to realize I needed that sound. I bought a strat. Thanks to David Gilmour and my son I had to. I went in passionate in mid 2018. Been playing ever since.

I have recently discovered your channel. You are now my favorite reaction person, and I have a number of reaction channels I frequent. Your insightful comments and the ability to articulate your feelings are rare. I am duly impressed. Few TH-camrs possess these abilities.
Pink Floyd has been my favorite band going back to the days of Syd Barrett. "Dark Side of the Moon" is the most iconic album ever with "The Wall" not far behind. "Ummagumma " was the album when they were really developing their sound after the departure of Syd. They are an album oriented band and therefore you need to listen to the entire album in order to capture the entire message.
And besides, we share the same name! Lol

Listen harder, Harri, there are indeed differences in the lead guitar and bass guitar arrangements. Certainly this is as masterful and transcendental as the Pulse concert version, but Gilmore is no "one trick pony". Thank you for this one. 😁😇

Roger Waters was the brains of Pink Floyd but David Gilmore was always the soul. My favorite songs on The Wall are mostly Gilmore written guitar songs. "Run". "Comfortably Numb". "Young Lust". This is the first version where I heard the audience singing so clearly. It was very moving. The Pulse concert may have a longer more dramatic solo. This was voted the best guitar solo, and the best guitar tone in the world by some outfits.
