I've driven my CTR from New York to Miami,FL and I just drove it back from Detroit and I found the drive to be very pleasant. I've never had a problem with my android auto, the ergonomics of the arm rest or the seats however I do have seat covers on my fronts seat so they add a little more padding. The roads noise wasn't an issue mainly because I had my music at a volume the pretty much covered it up. The one negative I'd give this car on a lengthy road trip is the cruise control setting, it's very annoying.
Elias, I agree with some of your points; however, to me they are more finicky than anything and don't degrade the quality of the drive. I drove from San Antonio TX to Tucson AZ 1300 miles and it is the Best Sports car I have ever driven on long trip and I am 50. 1. Why use Google map when you have a built in Navigation system that works perfectly. 2. Arm rest ergonomics is a big deal for me too. I loved my Crown Vic and A8L, but hated my WRX and others. I am 6'2" and the Type-R is perfect for my left and right arm rests. 3. Road noise! Really Elias? This is a 6-speed manual gearbox so you can shift at will based on the engine noise. That's how I drive sports cars from Z06 on down. But this is actually one of the quietest Sports cars EVER...EVER!!! In fact, I stripped most of the car (already) and the insulation is amazingly impressive. 4. Steering wheel? This steering wheel is perfectly fine. If you have clammy hands that's a physical issue with you. I wear driving leather gloves and the grip is phenomenal. 5. Lumbar seat? I am 50 and these seats delivered me from AZ to TX and back to AZ for Xmas 2600 miles in 96 hrs and my Wife (49) and I were supremely impressed for bucket seats. 6. However, those seats are not good with angora wool sweaters. My wife's sweater shedded into the alcantara seat and even seat belt and it took me as half hour to detail. I am a professional detailer so no biggie. 7. Entertainment. I can use my Nano iPod, Pandora, iTunes, Sirius XM, Radio and WiFi streaming no problem simultaneously on demand. Excellent infotainment system. I am not a big fan of the HondaLink, but whatever, I have OPTIONS! The only thing I see is that the Pandora mode can distribute a skip in the music every 45-60 seconds which is annoying when listening to your favorite tunes. FINALLY, Elias, this is a Very Well built Limited Edition Sports car that can take you to work or cross country without a glitch. Don't even compare with BMWs which spend half of their shelf lives in the garage for repairs. BMW is dead. RECOMMENDATION: HURRY UP with a 5 Reasons the Type-R doesn't SUCK. Because the 2018 Type-R I have doesn't SUCK ANYWHERE, rain, sun, Colorado snow, short and long trips. I am 50, owned 25 cars and driven over a million miles on roads all over the world. I am also a F1 and Rally Racing aficionado since 1975 and have driven some of the most powerful (loudest) cars in the world.
Styli F as you are seemingly quite experienced with the type R, would you mind telling me, what the feeling is under winter conditions? I mean, FW drive and 320 hp with winter tires....? Thank you!!
Yeah, Gato is a first world problem kind of guy 😛 “There is a thread on my seat sticking out, so this is one thing I definitely hate about the type R, I hope Honda rectifies this issue during the next refresh because it’s unbearable” 😂 The type R is so refined to the point of almost sacrificing character. Best daily out of the class. I also appreciate it because I’ve lived in other countries, this machine is like a Rolls Royce in comparison to what a vast majority of them drive, rain, shine or cold 😄
I picked up my Type R in Quebec City a week ago and drove it 800km (500 miles for my American friends lol) back to Toronto and had absolutely zero issues. And I’m 6’1” and 270lbs
@@francisnorthwood7862, “standards” or “no standards” my f**king point was that I personally found it comfortable for an 800km drive. For what the car is, I personally found it just fine for a long road trip. No need to presume what standards I have in life.
A shame that the SI isn't in hatch form. I feel like that could fill the gap (and one less rear wing) with highway livability and the hauling capacity of the hatch. In no way would the type-R be threatened from a sales volume standpoint and the market is ripe for good performing hatches (looking at you, Subaru).
This is why you have the 335d. My 3 series had amazing steering feel on the highway, you had to be deliberate with it but there was so much good feedback. The audio system is great and the cabins quiet enough. Seats were 10-way adjustable, 4-way lumbar, AND the pull out lower leg supports were awesome. My sport hatch has a good bit of wind noise around the A-pillar, a lot of general road noise underneath, and an annoying “yoga ball pong” noise over any expansion joint or crack in the road. The seats are uncomfortable and the steering is a little too darty on the freeway. But hey, it gets 42mpg, my commute is under an hour, and half the price of a new 3 series!
For me driving the car in pothole traffic drives me nuts. Every bump feels like something is fucking up my car. Long distance has never been an issue for me 850 mile day trip. This car has made me HATE driving on crappy roads, thank god im swapping out the 20s for 18”.
I'm already thinking about selling my WRX STI and keeping only my Type R... Compared to the STI the Type R may as well be a Mercedes. The Type R is quieter, the seats are better, the drive train is smoother, overall it is just easier than the STI. The literal only bonus my STI has is bad weather driving. I'm thinking about a cross country drive in my Type R as well.... i'm bored with my desk job and want to quit and take a break for a while.... I may just travel do some soul searching and drive around for a bit... I just love to be on the road and I want to experience those California canyons and those cool mountain highways in Colorado.
I could see you set up the Type R with a little bed in the back, and just travel the country with it. Be sure to get AAA for tire punctures, and more comfy 18 inch wheels
I believe Android Auto/Apple Car Play uses the processing power of the phone itself to 'project' the content onto the screen of the headunit. I don't think the headunit itself does anything more than just serve as a screen extension (projector) of your phone.
The main reason i hate the type r is the 20" tires and rims will fail after 12k miles and the 20" rims are acceptable to damage by curbing them or damaged by potholes.
I have that exact cable from amazon. It’s the only one that shorts out my center console. Went back to the Apple cable and no issues since. Physically it’s built well but I have issues with the internals.
First of all get an I-Phone, 2nd drove mine from Pittsburgh to MBSC and loved it. This year in May I'm taking it to California to drive the PCH, will let you know how it goes.
i have the fk2 type r , but cannot complain even in that for long journey s , i drive for 8 hours at a time when im abroad without problems , your headunit might have needed an update for the issues you mentioned , as for road noise if you are running semi slicks yes its gona be bad on mine it sounded like a bad bearing that is why i run street tyres for more comfort. you are lucky to have 3 modes , fk2 had only normal and R+ but normal is probably tighter steering than your comfort .
I have a type r. I live in central pa. I've driven to toledo ohio for a cat, Tennessee for the eclipse, Watkins Glenn in New York for vacation and two trips to Philly. The majority of my 7500 miles have been put on the car in road trips. I love it. Your video is a slap in the face to all type r owners. Btw, I'm 6 4 and 260 pounds. This car is comfortable and fun to drive.
Try using Bluetooth for music and use the stock navi its pretty good im from cali though so im not sure if its good where u live. Since i use bluetooth, when i start my car it automatically starts playing my playlist. I like bluetooth because i dont like plugging my phone in to be able to use apple carplay i rather not have to plug anything in. But the rest of the complaints i dont have a solution haha. Is your A pillar rattling? If it is u can easily fix it with 3m tape just put it inbetween the crack you wont even be able to see it.
Hey flying gato, the issues I've seen with the glitching was actually official talked about with good, so make sure everything is updated on your phone. But if you keep having issues you may have other issues. So far my record is 8hrs of none stop Android auto and worked without an issue the whole trip.
Do you use the climate in full auto all the time? How do you like it? People always complain about it not working right but I think it’s the best dual zone climate I’ve ever had in a car.
Interesting.. I have had a couple of long distance journey and can't say at the moment I've encountred the same issues. Apart from road noise from the stock wheels and tyres. Lane keep assist is also useful on the UK Spec along with many other features which I don't think the US Spec gets which is a shame
Interesting, my wrx wasn't bad on 2000 mile road trip. Crazy that a lot of you tubers love type R ride but I guess they don't take them on long road trips. Good video man. Good insight
Dude, cmon.... 1) Get iPhone, 2) Your not driving a truck, why would NOT be looking out for potholes. 3) You did a res delete, now your complaining about long distance car noise?!?! I cant even get to 4 and 5 because its just like your pulling teeth to find reasons to complain. Im sorry I like your channel but you gotta take the car for whats its worth. I don’t think people are looking to buy this car to take road trips. Its an amazing car for what it was made to be. I love my Type R.
If you would have gotten to the end I basically say what you said, in the larger scheme these are minor, but still worth mentioning. I also say there are positives, which I will cover in another video. Btw, Apple car play has similar issues, it's mostly a ram shortage issue, I'm doing too much through the unit. Also if you notice I didn't talk about exhaust noise, it was the wind and tire noise that got a bit annoying.
Thanks Gato! I will say I had a CarPlay issue where I would plug it in and it would crash. I fixed by unpairing the phone and repairing. Also I make sure not to pair friends phones if they plug in and do the 1 time only. It hasn’t been acting up since repairing.
Hi.. whats the sound system like...quality ? is it comparable to say a b and o system in an s3 audi ? or the bose system in the old mazda speed 3 (uk mps ) thanks Neilo
It would be good if the steering had progressive weight added in comfort mode so at slow speeds it's as per comfort now and ramps the steering up to the sport setting weight at say 75mph.
Luis Flores i dont think its android auto, i strongly believe its the whole honda radio setup. I constantly have to reboot it on my wifes 2017 CRV all the time
4 hours of road noise tire noise relax it's a nature of the beast, my 2018 vw golf gti is the same thing specially when my seat is hard my left leg falls a sleep so I drive my comfortable 2014 Honda civic
Word of advice, 10 dollar cable from amazon is not a high quality cable. 99 percent of all cable from amazon are generic and the same as those you see from gas station.
Admit it, Elias, you were reaching on this one. I respect your experience, but have to say I feel less fatigued driving my '18 Type R than anything else I have owned in the last 45 years. Before telecommuting, I had an hour commute each way, and sometimes longer, with no stiffness or soreness when I got out. I can't vouch for a four or five hour drive, but that is long in any vehicle.
@FlyinGato No, our Honda is not as smooth as a Beamer, but the lumbar support -which is not all that great- somehow has not been an issue. Unlike the SI which eventually got so bad I had to buy a special leather car seat cushion. The steering wheel feel in your hands sucks next to the feel of the combo wood/leather one on my wife's '02 Lexus SC430. . but other than that and the folding hardtop, the Type R walks all over that $60K -in 2002 dollars- convertible coupe. Nothing is perfect, not even the FK8. Turning radius at 39.5 feet is too large. But I bet I could take it on a long road trip, no problem. Serius XM will drown out any road or wind noise. Question- at what point did the lumbar support or lack thereof start to cause you discomfort? I have not driven this more than 90 minutes at one stretch. Most cars are not fun to drive for 4 or 5 hours straight. Even if you are not hungover. Maybe a Bentley, S Class Mercedes, but certainly not a hot hatch. That is why it is good to stop at least every two hours and stretch. I drove straight through from Palm Springs back to Phoenix a few years ago in the SI. I was dead by the time I got within 40 minutes of our house. I think it would have gone better in the Type R- better seats- but that is just too long.
Wow I didn't expect the first one, it doesn't happen on my Sport (Euro), the others are more or less expected for the type R. Sure honda need to put better control software, upgraded infotainment unit, and the seats is just a trade-off for weight.
Man that infotainment thing sucks! I'm sorry to hear that bro. Wonder if they can come out with a software update fix because I would say that should be considered a defect.
My '13 SI will shut down every now and then with an iPod connected to it. The only way to get it back going again is to shut down the car and re-start. My Chevy truck has Apple Car play and when a phone call comes in sometimes it will connect it sometimes it won't. If I don't us Apple Car Play it works perfectly all of the time. Moral of the story is they are throwing plenty of tech in cars but often it is made to a price point and I hope they re-think that if they are to get us in self driving cars.
Mugetsu_Si Yeah it seems once a week Apple CarPlay glitches out and I have to re boot the head unit and my phone. Not sure if it’s the car causing it or a phone update needs to happen.
AbsolutelySi it’s mostly the apps. In particular the permissions part and mirroring parts. Sometimes they will fix one glitch but it will cause something like location services to freak out. Next thing you know maps thinks you’re at your house lol.
The infotainment in ALL TypeR are optional except US. Comfort mode is to help in parallel park. Change the tyres to help with the road noise....wish could do that to your voice🙄🙄. Huh? You could use skateboard elbow pads. You are just too wide to take a roadtrip in that seat. Get a Sparco or Alpine Star for long journey.
Sometimes Apple car Play gets stuck in my regular Civic X but only when loading playlists from a third party app. Other than that, this is a breeze. On the side note, I know you’re using Android but I noticed a slight visual change when Apple Car Play was displayed on the dashboard. I don’t know if there was any update (like OTA ?) from the car itself (I guess not), but it’s getting more reliable and stable even in terms of GPS. Not sure this is not simply due to Android Car Play app itself ? Conclusion: get an iPhone 😋😋😋 Thanks for this great video 👍👍👍
You should get an iPhone and try apples CarPlay it is very solid, it is different but it very stable. You should install some sound deadening and measure the decibles.
Hey Bro, I've made a 3400kms trip. 1700kms in each way, 18hrs + of driving. This car sucks completely for long trip !! but wasn't build for that so we can't blame it
I'm telling you what my experience is with the R, and what you can expect if you owned one. The title of the video tells you it's going to be like this. I have over 300 videos, and a lot of those are of me wrenching, track day driving, and trying things. Those may be more up your alley.
Another reason is because.....it looks like fucking shit!! Every car I had since I was 18 has been some form of Honda civic..and this is just not Honda at all.. the worst looking civic so far....by far!!
OMG it’s a type R not a limousine so disappointed with your negative comments on this car. Really enjoyed watching your reviews on this weapon .... now I’m done 😡😡😡😡😡
FlyinGato Another explanation: sounded like your unconscious would reject your "girlfriend/wife", but your conscious is still in denial. So one is constantly looking for prooves and the literal hair in the soup. If that's the case, stop ranting already and tell me your price! File a divorce and watch me driving your japanese ex into the setting sun... :-D Regards from Europe, buddy..
Lol your funny loco these are tonto reasons for saying its not a cruiser, me and the missus drive for hours on a long road trip and never had this problems , one android auto is shit but carplay is better and i never got that problem could be your caca phone or your crapy reception in your area n 10 dollar cable is not high quality lollol 2# steering is fine you dont need to concentrate so much cause you use cruise control and its fine just steer on comfort its excellent i dont have that issue #3 road noise comes to the caca wheels you bought loco theres your road noise pay for better wheels and you wont have that problem other than that put a little music on via bluetooth and your fine for hours it does not need to be on a droid auto #4 elbow rest is sad loco . You have that problem in your country cause your left hand drive jajajaja we dont have that problem here in Australia we RHD so my left elbow is in the middle #5 bro my wife falls sleep on long distance cause the seat are so comfortable get a Lombard pillow if you got that problem #6 the leather steering wheel is just silly hahahahHa so no need to mention that one . I think the road in your country are neglected the roads here are so smooth i hardly ever use comfort . It really depends where you are mate our type r's also have more features than your usa models , i think they send the crapy type r to the usa cause our here in Australia are fully fully loaded . Anyways i have to disagree with you on this one it comes down to your roads and tyres and tech on your type r ,you guys got dicked on the tech parts in us models that's why you have empty buttons and all our buttons are filled with goodies lol ,I want to hear the positives on you next vid cause i love taking my type r for long drives just encase i come across a windy road too much fun if i left it behind and drove my Beamer cause its more comfortable i will regret it and wish i would of brought the beast out to tackle the roads head on i like to take the scenic roads so good man specially here in Australia roads are well looked after and smooth . Chao locito
I feel the overall problems explained here, besides the android car play, would fall under any performance car driving really long distance miles. If I had a type r, my default daily setting would be sports mode. I could careless for "comfort" mode. My main focus for purchasing a type r would be for its street performance purposes. I feel like "confront" mode was an option forced from honda to satisfy the non hardcore enthusiast to purchase the car. I'm hoping the base model type r fixes that.
I would agree, I'd be ok with a +R mode only mode, but I was just saying how it's not a great highway cruiser. As a track day/backroads car it's almost perfect
You should have waited and made the smart move and bought a Stinger GT. Faster, more dependable and functional. But you're a hypebeast and will not consider this as a smart move.

I've not had that problem with Android Auto in my car and I drove from Indiana to Colorado. The gas tank size is my biggest issue.

I never had an issue with mine. The worst thing will be ground clearance
Since you have so much seat time in the prelude would you take it over the R on long trips?
Hmmm, the seats are more comfortable, the ride is similar and the steering is better, but the road noise is way worse lol! I'll take the type R
It would be good if the steering had progressive weight added in comfort mode so at slow speeds it's as per comfort now and ramps the steering up to the sport setting weight at say 75mph.
I live in Burbank ca. I've taken my car to San Diego, Vegas, Tj Mexico , NO.....problem with anything
I use the same phone (Nexus 6P) in my Type R in the UK, and I have not had any issues with Android Auto.
Until this trip I never had an issue, it's after an hour that it starts giving up
I'd rather have this car than a grocery car...
I like your points. Android auto is terrible!
Luis Flores i dont think its android auto, i strongly believe its the whole honda radio setup. I constantly have to reboot it on my wifes 2017 CRV all the time
I have the same weird android auto issues with my 2018 subaru legacy. Totally feel your frustration.
Tell me....driving from MA to PA every week but at the end it's an awesome car 🚗 🍻 ✌ 👍
The point was that I used 4 different cables, and it doesn't really like any of them
You answer your own question is not a road car is a track car is a Civic type R
Yep, just sharing my overall experience, I have over 30 vids of me enjoying it for its right purpose, gotta share the whole experience 😁😁😁
Wth are you saying
wtf are you saying
Admit it, Elias, you were reaching on this one. I respect your experience, but have to say I feel less fatigued driving my '18 Type R than anything else I have owned in the last 45 years. Before telecommuting, I had an hour commute each way, and sometimes longer, with no stiffness or soreness when I got out. I can't vouch for a four or five hour drive, but that is long in any vehicle.
I guess I'm just spoiled by my 335d, and most likely, it's the lack of lumbar support from the seats
Put it in comfort and let the good times roll 😎
I thought this video was about something being wrong with the car, but after listening to you I think there's something wrong with the driver
Well, there's definitely no doubt at all about that! However, the Type R makes a mediocre long distance car at best
I don’t see any chance that it would be considered a good road trip car. Best part is pushing the top end here and there on ur road trip
Android auto isn’t really perfect right now. It’s part of the reason I got frustrated and installed my stock head unit again
You lost the functionality of the secret car diagnostic menu,
Did you check the sleep function. lol
Listen to this guy complain about road noise, after he cuts mufflers off.
hey, just stating the facts
Honda, please, let the car have individualized configs. The new Megane RS has them
The god damn Veloster N has it too
The infotainment in ALL TypeR are optional except US.
Why is he driving a type r for a winter beater???
It's being rectified, I'll have a truck and a WRX to take care of the next Winters
Damn, your drivers seat is getting worn down.
Wow, you were driving by white plains ny.
Yup I do all the time
Sometimes Apple car Play gets stuck in my regular Civic X but only when loading playlists from a third party app.
Conclusion: get an iPhone 😋😋😋
Thanks for this great video 👍👍👍
I dont have none of this problems in my 2021
You should get an iPhone and try apples CarPlay it is very solid, it is different but it very stable. You should install some sound deadening and measure the decibles.
sound like you were mad grumpy on the road trip bro!
I was! So sleepy and tired lol
road noise? dude have you ever gone down the autobahn @180kmh in a 2000 vw polo? no? THEN SHUT YO ASS UP ABOUT NOISE
After all of your review, all that I can say is, EK9 still wins!
Very true
Hey Bro, I've made a 3400kms trip. 1700kms in each way, 18hrs + of driving. This car sucks completely for long trip !! but wasn't build for that so we can't blame it
I know, totally can't blame it, for what it was designed for, it's amazing 😁😁
Buy an iPhone. Apple Car Play works just fine
I've tested that as well (I have an iPhone as well) and I have similar issues. Might be specific to my car.
Dude you have a Honda. What more do you want.
Opinion based pointless content
I'm telling you what my experience is with the R, and what you can expect if you owned one. The title of the video tells you it's going to be like this. I have over 300 videos, and a lot of those are of me wrenching, track day driving, and trying things. Those may be more up your alley.
Joseph Collazo I got exactly what I came for
Another reason is because.....it looks like fucking shit!!
All your ranting... could it be only sleep deprivation on your side? :)
haha, it's very possible lol
FlyinGato Another explanation: sounded like your unconscious would reject your "girlfriend/wife", but your conscious is still in denial. So one is constantly looking for prooves and the literal hair in the soup. If that's the case, stop ranting already and tell me your price! File a divorce and watch me driving your japanese ex into the setting sun...
:-D
Regards from Europe, buddy..
Chao locito
winter time poor reception. Common sense please.
It's a good 2nd car...
So dumb. It’s a good road trip car for a track car.
Wqtching this wile drinking MICKEYS
get an iPhone. problem solved
Android sucks.
Why are you surprised
buy a benz stooge.
Bitch bitch bitch bitch ! Hahaha good video
It's garbage
That Honda is not worth 40k don’t buy that crap
Most ugly car on the road
Idk wtf android auto is or does lmao
You should have waited and made the smart move and bought a Stinger GT. Faster, more dependable and functional. But you're a hypebeast and will not consider this as a smart move.
Kia? More dependable??
