We have a 2016 civic and a 2018 crv in the family and they both have connectivity issues with our phones. No amount of resetting it or brining it to the dealer works which is by far the most annoying part. In the crv, it will often disconnect several times in the span of just a few minutes, or may never reconnect until the car turns off.

Good winter tires are key for any Honda car imo, they're kinda stanced in a way that makes them vulnerable to slides but good tires counter this very well

What kind of tire and wheel do you recommend for a new Type R owner that lives in a Southern state that may get snow once a year?
I'm fine with the stock tires, but I've read they do not last on a daily driver.

Running Nokian Hakkapeliitta 10 Studded on my Lifted BRZ (295/60r16). I agree, the low weight is a huge benefit and allows me to easily slow the car down on steep mountain passes. My weight distribution is 53/47 front/rear, so 120lbs of sand & other gear in the trunk has done wonders for traction.

Honda technician here. 20:24 We have had issues with the infotainment system for the 9th, 10th, and 11th generations of Civic’s. Usually it’s a software issue. Takes a battery reset (remove both battery cables and let sit for a few minutes) to fix it most of the time. I’ve even had issues with my own 10th gen Civic.

    • @alienc3
      @alienc3 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

We had the infotainment system replaced twice on our 2022 Si, it didn't work at all would not connect the phone at all even after a battery reset. It still does the won't connect thing on occasion, in our case if you delete your phone and add it again that fixes it for us. At least I know it's a common issue and I don't need to go back in and get a 4th infotainment system installed.

@@richardsmith579 It's funny you think RWD vs FWD makes a world of difference. Mainly it's down to the driver. RWD with acceptable tires will out perform a FWD with all seasons by a mile. Same could be said for a FWD vs 4WD with summer tires. Depends on how you drive, and what you like. I'm more comfortable in my 15 Camaro with snow tires than I am in my 4WD truck. Great advice about finding a quite deserted area to test your car's and your abilities in the snow/ice. I did that with my 17 year old last week here in Texas. It is possible she will not drive on something like this for several years so I wanted her first experience to be with me. Took her to a parking lot, turned off traction control, and told her to have fun. Took her a minute, but she told me later it was a blast and she actually could feel how the car and the tires were performing when she did things differently. Then we turned the traction control back on so she could see how much it helps. It's a lot! At least in our car. Us East Texas folks do not see this stuff often, we must practice when we do. Congratulations on your niece as well, fun times!

I have my GR86 on Blizzak WS90s with taller sidewalls than stock to increase ground clearance about 3/4 in. Throws off the speedo a little, but it's like 5 mph low at 70 (so real speed of about 75), so it's a non-issue. With the standard LSD, it's a blast and so predictable and easy to control with nannies off. I've used Blizzaks for years and the '90s seem like the best ones yet.
I used to use left-foot braking with FWD because the parking brake cable would get stretched and, while not as good for goofy sliding fun, I could dance the thing down curvy roads. Don't know if they even let you do that anymore as I know at least some cars have throttle override when the brake is applied at the same time (thanks to morons in Priuses who hit the wrong pedals).

Love these therapy drives, even if this was not a fully-fledged therapy drive it's still nice to see from time to time. idk about other viewers but i really enjoy these (found myself rewatching even old SI drives in the rain and such). I have a question: does the water temp never go to the middle in conditions like these? because you surely drove for more than half an hour and i think that's more than enough time for a 2 liter to get up to temp, but it seems just a line below it and it made me curious.
EDIT: went through some older videos and it seems like it's always like this. idk how it looks in real life but at least on camera it feels like it's a line below the middle haha

Interesting that you had the quadtrac pros and chose to change to a nordic winter this time around.
I live in Toronto. Snow cleanup is fast, but because it's canada everyone thinks they need nordic winter tires. I strongly disagree, and think that most people should actually be on a performance winter tire like the quatrac pro.
The tldr is that nordic winters (x ice snow, ws90) are terrible in the wet and dry. As long as there's no snow/ice, a nordic winter at 0° C gets demolished by a summer tire. We're talking worst possible conditions for a summer tire. Obviously, if its snows the summer tires are a no go. To be clear, I am a strong supporter of winter tires, but most people are definitely better off with a performance winter.
A performance winter (pilot alpin 5, ts870p) will be almost as good as an all season in the wet/dry in cold temps. Like 90% as good. Theyll also be 90% as good in the snow as a nordic winter.
Given that I'm on my winter tires 7/12 months of the year, having one that performs well in the cold dry/wet days is much more important than raw snow performance. My performance winters have been more than adequate on fresh snow, I'd probably bottom out in deep snow before I really regret not having nordic winters.
That said, id be lying if I said there's no difference in snow performance. My tires are clearly worse than the ws90's i had last year in the snow, but it's more than safe enough. The best performance winters can perform like a mid tier nordic tire in the snow, which is plenty.
On the plus side, you won't be driving around on marshmallows all winter long. I cannot understate how bad nordic winters are outside of the snow. Tyre reviews has a great video about the topic, but iirc the nordic winter is taking meters longer to stop from 50kmph in the dry. The obvious argument is that you should drive to your tires limits, but these nordic winters perform like budget linglongs in most conditions.

man, I live in Sweden, and we've been having blizzards for the past couple days. And with the right tires, winter is absolutely nothing, and I have a FWD manual A6 Avant. Lucky for me I can actually turn TCS off completely, and as long as I find a nice straight, I can just throw the car around and really get some wide angles. And I've also learnt how to keep sliding. Just hit the gas right before the car straightens up, and it'll give you a throw in the front, letting the rear slide. I also have electronic parking brake, but just find your ways around it and its no issue:)

You don't want to clear the snow from within the tread when driving on snow. You want and need it, because of the snow on snow grip you get. That's why blocky AT tyres with big blocks and big gaps are absolute shit in the snow. You only want to get the tread cleared once you get onto asphalt, especially wet asphalt. Then you need those sipes to evacuate the water for extra grip.

I owned a 2020 STi prior to my Type R and while it was touted as a winter beast. It never seemed to truly like a harsh cold snowy winter. Transmission always got clunky when it was cold. And my engine always felt like it was gonna break lol

Your like, "I've never seen a 15mpg school zone". I'm like, "I've never seen a lit up school zone sign in weather like that". In PA it's the same. So SLOW and annoying to drive through.

Would be curious what a different experience this would've been with all seasons! My SI is pretty hairy in snow with my all-seasons.. 😂 . Slid into a curb in Melrose last winter in a freak snow storm in Melrose (I'm also in Mass)

That intro clip is why I hate FWD in snow. No matter how good the tyres are you always end up with loads of understeer with the only counter being the brakes which are far too forward biased in street cars to get any rotation from them. I've just got so used to balaced RWD cars not having much slip or push through corners unless you induce some yourself I guess. Haven't had issues with grip other than in FWD cars after you get going the weight transfer kicks in and you have nothing and they're horrendous on slippy hills. Then again, where I live you're allowed to have studded tyres from mid october to april and you're smoking something if you think I'm not taking full advantage of that when I drive on unsalted side roads often.
Oh yeah, get some low temp washer fluid asap if you haven't already. I had -30C rated fluid in my E39 but whoops it dropped to -35 at night and now I need a new washer pump, again. And get used to slamming the brakes till they start locking up to feel for grip if you haven't already. Practically second nature for everyone on the road where I'm from but you don't realise how much that little 1s slam at 15mph tells you about grip levels if you haven't tried it before.
Also great to see winter has forced the European habit of shifting at 2k RPM in absolutely everything you drive to save fuel (honestly it's way more than you'd think) on you. Have you considered EU side mirrors though? I don't know how expensive they would be but NA spec mirrors are just atrocious from my experience. Having both side mirrors be convex with the edge being super convex as basically a blindspot mirror is so much nicer. Can see cars in the lane next to you until they're completely alongside, practically impossible to miss someone next to you even if you don't shoulder check.

you have the gut... but not good for your car thats for sure. Im in Vancouver every year the first 1-2 snow days, our car crash incident will jumb to 200%-500% just these 2 days. They're are always lots of summer tires club VIP member driving in the snow days with summer tires so you can imagine of that....imagine these summer tire vip member on your left side and your right side maybe front and back when your driving ur baby FL5....Oh boy no fking way I will let my FL5 running in winter, becuase I can control myself don't run into others, but there is no way I can control others won't run into my car.

I had to deliver mail yesterday in an LLV in KY. It was single digit temps a lot of back roads and neighborhoods were just sheets of ice. We had little chains around the back tires, but that did not help stopping since any touch of the brake would just let the truck slide forward lol. I did not have a good time in that turd box of a truck. It barely runs on dry asphalt, and gets stuck easily in gravel because of weight. Snow and ice? Nope, we should not have even been out there, but people need their amazon packages ha.

If you can find them, I recommend an old iPod sock for your shift knob. I bought a pack years ago just for this purpose. Perfect fit on a shift knob and easy to manipulate until it comes to temp (hot or cold).

I had the same issue with the infotainment system for my FL5, I had to factory reset the infotainment to temporarily fix that issue (also tried a battery reset didn't fix the issue). Theres that weird notification on the screen saying something along the lines of "theres no storage left" and never connects to apple car play. I got fed up with having to factory reset the infotainment everytime this happens so I went to my local honda dealership and they replaced the whole infotainment sytem under warranty and the issue hasn't come back since.
