    Bought a new 69 AMX that I ordered from the factory, Hunter Green, 390 Go pack, 4 speed, tan leather interior, took delivery on Christmas Eve 1968. Drove it out of the dealership and promptly got in a race with a 55 Chevy. Outran him and then outran everyone I jumped on in Atlanta. That car was fast and fabulous. Next Christmas Eve I will have been driving an AMX for
    50 years !!

    There are hundreds of these AMXs still being raced throughout the country. Nearly every dragstrip has a couple that they see regularly. I have seen as many as 7 at the same event at our little track in WV. I have owned a 69 AMX drag car for well over 30 years, and get many compliments for appearance and performance. I have owned Javelins, AMXs, SC/Ramblers, and other AMC products through the years, as well as many pony cars fron the Big 3. I have enjoyed all of them, and consider the AMC to be the equal of any of the others, and better driving than most in their class.

      I have to add to that... my wife had to mumble it out but she admitted the old car did ride pretty good for a 50+ year old car... all I could do is look at her and go,, hmmmm??

    I bought a 69 AMX for 4K in 1987. Was a 290/4 speed, POWER steering and DRUM brakes. Clock delete plate, tilt steering, visor over gauges. Bittersweet Orange, with charcoal interior. Great driving car. West Va. state police mountain pursuit fleet order. Their maint shop put in 390, and was drag raced for years by fleet auction 2nd owner. Driven occasionally by third owner. I enjoyed it for ten years, everywhere I could.

    In 1968 I was stationed in kaiserslautern Germany. E5 and above could have cars shipped home for free but only American built cars. The only car dealer on post was AMC. Rebels and AMX were the hot item.

    Very well preserved AMX! It has the mid-level (and often overlooked).343 Typhoon V8. The narrator is mistaken about the optional 360 as that became available in the gen-3 V8's in 1970. The 343 was an awesome motor that was very competitive to the other guys small- block medium-displacement motors at the time. Long live AMC muscle.

    • @kevinwong6588
      @kevinwong6588 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The 343 was modified into the 360 for 1970, remained all the way to 1991 on the Grand Wagoneer.

      @audieconrad8995 I, too, love my 1968 AMX with the 343 4bbl v8, with a Holley 750 carb.. I have power steering in mine and a good WEATHER EYE heating control system. The 4 speed T10 with Hurst shifter and linkage is fun... I never seen so many people ( mainly women of any age) come up and just simply say that thing is really cool.. Not to add , my 11 year old neighbor boy asked me 100s of questions about its power and all kinds of technical stuff about it 🤣.. it really hits a soft spot with me....

I still have it and have just taken it out of storage after 35 years so much fun to drive, bought a 401 and rebuiding it to over 405hp! More fun!!! So glad I kept it all these years.

    This brought up a great memory. # 2172 was my present from me to me for surviving the Nam. Weak link was the keyed rear end. Cured that with a Dana 60 from a 440 6 Pack Barracuda. Just the right width. Sadly, got married and out grew. Often wonder if it survived.

    I worked at Canal Rambler in New Orleans in the late Sixties and lusted after a Breedlove edition AMX. Which they somehow neglected to mention in the Video. It came from the Factory with a dual four barrel 390 cid V8, dual exhaust and 3/4 race came, 4 speed T10 transmission, with separate overdrive and 4.1 geared rear end. Only 1600 were made.

    No car company did more with less than AMC did bringing out the AMX. While GM was counting its $100 bills AMC counted it's pennies and came out firing with a great handling car that was quick. In 1970 while the 2 seat AMX went away AMC put the much better breathing " Dog leg" heads and add .16 stroke so the 290 became the 304 and the 343 the 360. The 390 lived one more year and then it stroked out to 401 which both the LAPD and Alabama state troopers thought were great cars.

    although the Javelin made its debut first .... The AMX idea was first...The Jav was spawned from the AMX by making the wheelbase and roofline 12 inches longer and modifying the rear end ...not the other way around ...The Javelin could be bought with a 6 cylinder engine for the economy minded buyer...The AMX could only be purchased with an 8 cylinder engine....

    Great video. The 390 AMX got rave reviews from the motoring press back in it's day, because it handled better than most of it's musclecar competition. I still prefer the '71-'74 though.

    I recall reading years ago that the Javelin actually managed to outsell the Barracuda in 1968 and 1969. (The source might have been the long-defunct but excellent Musclecars magazine that was put out by CSK Publishing of New Jersey. Some of the guys at Hemmings Muscle Machines today used to write for Musclecars.) Or it may have been somewhere else, but whatever. Also, I seem to remember coming across the fact that the second-gen Javelin outsold the E-body Barracuda and Challenger a time or two in the later-muscle years of the 1972-1974 period.

    Forgot to add that this AMX is a 69. There were a few little errors but we will gladly take what we can get. The 70 had 325 hp. Years ago there was a muscle car magazine (I forget which one) but they were very friendly to AMCs. A guy wrote in and asked why they were so friendly to AMCs and the editor replied that well it could be that three of the five editors at the magazine drove AMXs ! Awesome.

    It seems to me that Ed F booboo & HarleyRider 283 have some animosity over the AMX.....They must have had their clock cleaned by one is what I'm thinkin...I had a 68 AMX 390 4speed that I absolutely loved...It was production #120...I made a few upgrades to the cam & heads that made a HUGE difference in performance, along with the functioning 70 Ram Air hood, it was VERY hard to catch...Also AMC had what was basically a 4 Link rear suspension on the AMX, that gave them that "Front Wheel Pulling Launch", the AMX was famous for... While other cars are spinning the tires, the AMX is already gone.....See ya at the finish line Ed & Harley...LOL

      Metaroose It is brought up if you're talking to knowledgeable enthusiasts.

    • @05gtdriver
      @05gtdriver 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Not sure if "influential" is the correct term to describe what the AMX brought to the "muscle car" game. Actually, "muscle car" was a term brought up in the mid 80s to describe 60's-70's American big block intermediates coupes. Super cars is what they were called when these cars were new, that moniker applied in the 80's to expensive mid-engine exotics, so enthusiast coined the phrase "muscle car" to describe them anew. Technically, by AMC's admission, the original 2 seat AMX was considered a "sports car", in the same vein as the Corvette, due to it's 2 seat configuration.

    • @05gtdriver
      @05gtdriver 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Funny, read what Webster defines as a "muscle car", but it only states that it's first known use of the term was supposedly in 1966, yet other sources mention that the term "supercar" became widespread in 1966 in published articles and ad campaigns(in which printed proof exists). In fact, coming full circle because of this MotorWeek review of the AMC AMX, AMC called it's compact Rogue model the SC/Rambler with the SC standing for "Super Car"..... Not saying anyone is wrong, or that I'm correct, I just don't remember anyone saying "muscle car" when I was growing up in the late 60/early 70s.

    • @davidhall1707
      @davidhall1707 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes. The '68 and '69 were rated at 315 hp and the '70 was rated at 325 hp. I believe all 3 years of the 390s called for an amazing 425 ft/lb of torque!

    • @davidhall1707
      @davidhall1707 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Aha! You are correct Ed. I forgot about the VERY limited production '69 AMX SS which did indeed have the 340 hp 390! I think it was considered that the SS was underrated at 340hp and generally thought to be more like 400+ hp.

      All AMC engines where small blocks. They unfortunately didn't have the funds, like the big 3, to go deep into expanding their products.The 401 came out in 1970, if I'm not mistaken. It was a stroked out 390. Funny part is, the rebel machine had a modified 390, with different manifolds. It was to compensate for the increase in curb weight.

    at 177inches, the shortest muscle car . Vid is wrong about 360 (that was years later). Most had power steering and power brakes. 390 engine had a much higher nickel content than Chevy/GM and the 390 had a forged crank. AMX also had built in traction bars. Crappy writing - cars are art - learn your topic, dammit!

      I get your point, but if he's going into other years, he should have included '401'. Almost everybody screws up the AMX. Even Leno when he did the playboy pink AMX covered it poorly, spending too much time slagging on AMC and ignoring how they bettered the big 3 in many technical ways.

      This video was about the 2 seat AMX. The 401 did not appear in AMX until the second generation 4 seat cars starting in 1971.

      That's cold, MustangLab, I bought my beautiful new '68 Matador red 390 4 speed AMX, #5559, and it was scary fast, I never had any doubts about the engine size. It still sits in my garage, almost perfect in looks, with almost 200 K miles on it's unopened mill. By the way, I like older Mustangs, too!

      I purchased a brand new 69 390 AMX in Jan. of 1970. Since then I've owned over 100 other cars. 25 were "Sports Cars". including 7 Corvettes, 5 Nissan Z's, Supra's, Hemi's, couple Cudas, RX7's , and a 96 Viper GTS. They've all come and gone, but my favorite is still parked in my garage where it's been for the last 51 years. There's a reason for that, but only AMX owners, and former AMX owners get it.
