  • Another remastering of a low res video uploaded in my DSL days. This time it's the Sierra Railroad, a day spent on the line in May 1992. Enjoy the sounds of Baldwin and Nathan M5 horns.

    Great Nathan M5R24 horn . Brings back memories of AC&Y H - 20 - 44's through Sycamore, Ohio in the mid to late '50's. That's the horn they had. We lived a block from the tracks. As a child I had a front row seat! All Opposed Piston power !!

    I used to see Sierra trains go by my house all the time when I lived in the oakdale area. Really cool seeing old footage of trains from an area I know

    @ fmnut - In the late '50's I would visit grandparents in Fostoria, OH. I got to see Baldwin VO - 1000's on the East branch of the T&OC through Fostoria as a kid. Always thought they sounded like a bucket of hex nuts being shaken.

    Excellent footage of this operation.
    The number of pickup trucks at the plywood factory was striking, obviously the vehicle of choise in the countryside.
    But never expected to see a Peugeot 504 parked in the same lot, never knew this car was sold in the US.

    That is one interesting sounding horn. Sounds like the mellow sound of probably a M3.

    • @fmnut
      @fmnut  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think it's an M5 with one or two bells not sounding.

      I watched later into the video and I saw that it was a M5. So it’s the #1, 4, and 5 bells working.

      Not all bells are working on the horn for sure

      I hear all bells (except for the #3 bell most of the time... at 17:25, the #3 bell can definitely be heard, unless I'm hearing overtones), and the #4 bell sounds half a step higher than usual for an M5. Regardless, it's apparent that this horn could have used a proper servicing, which most M-series horns sadly did not get due to their frequent need for maintenance.

    What happened to #44? I looked it up, Wikipedia said it was stored in 1995 and scrapped in 2008.

    • @fmnut
      @fmnut  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's correct. They had 3 Baldwin S12s on the roster. 40 and 44 were scrapped, 42 was retained for special occasions. They switched to EMD's which had better parts availability. More recently they got low emissions rebuilds.

      @@fmnut speaking of low emissions, did the Sierra ever try using bio-diesel with the Baldwins?

      @@bakerboat4572 Also, bio diesel doesn't significantly reduce emissions, it's simply a renewable resource as opposed to a fossil fuel. It is carbon neutral.
