  • Another remastered Baldwin video from the 1992 California trip, this time the Amador Central. I only got to shoot the outward run on this occasion, as the train derailed as they were shoving back onto the SP interchange track. The engine was effectively trapped, and the engineer told me it would be hours until they were rerailed and got the track fixed. On the way back to Sacramento, I did catch the SP's Ione local coming up the branch to meet the AC crew.

Among the best and most enjoyable chase documentation of a beautiful short line. Nice that you could experience this. Wish I could have!

I must agree, the video is lovely, such a pity the 9 was parted out. That horn as you say is just splendid. The rumble and timbre to it. I assume it to be some type of M5?

This is a railroad that should have never been lost. Trucks killed it off and sadly that traffic dried up too when Martel lost the mill. Even today ISP in Ione is barely hanging on by a thread. 😞

Jackson/Martel isn’t the same with the Mil and train yard gone.

That Baldwin manhandles the grade at 17:00! Looks like no problem.

I have lived in Ione. Did this train just travel from Martel to Ione? What was the route?
I don't recognize any of the locations. Would someone mind telling me what some of the locations are with a time stamp
Is the mountain on the left in 12:19 that volcano-looking mountain in Jackson?

The opening scenes were taken at the railroad yard in Martell. Yes, this railroad only ran from Martell to Ione. Subsequent scenes were all taken from highway 88/104 between Martell and Ione, in order as the train progressed. The "volcano looking mountain" shot was taken from highway 88 looking south near Sunnybrook. You can view all these locations on Google Earth by following the rail line at the spots where it is near to or crosses the highway.

I think part of the line is now used by those using Speeders.

The speeders are not allowed to run past the sunnybrook crossing because of a incidence where they hooked the gates to a garage opener, which is illegal.

That little Engine needed a helper. Rickety old track. She never stood a chance. Where's the S.P.to help?

That Baldwin could grind up and down those hills all day, just not so fast. The handwriting was on the wall at this date for the mill so investment in track work was not an option.

My friend used to be head of operations for the successor railroad, AFRR or Amador Foothill railroad and he says that to keep a tight budget instead of tunnels and bridges which were expensive, they built over hills which went up to 5% grades on the line.
