Mato, i loved watching your videos. not only because youre a good commentator/narrator, but also the magical moves made during those days.. thanks for bringing them up 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Marshall came up with one of the best, most enduring gambit lines of all time, one that is still playable for super GMs today. Capablanca beat it over the board. Unreal. A masterpiece and a historic game for opening theory.
I sort of assumed from the title that Marshall won. Not so! The commentary brings the game to life much better than reading a list of moves with "!!"s and "?"s., and endless variations in brackets. Mato just tells you the moves, explains the key moments in a clear way and shows what might have happened if thing had been different.
Capablanca greatest ever by a mile, only Morphy was equal. Kasparov, Fisher, Alekhine - all they spent day and night at chessboard , at books , analyzing all time some combinations. But Capa didn't do barely any preparation and still managed to be almost unbeatable( has world record of a time without loses which exist till today) Also, as Alekhine said Capa possessed the biggest rapidity of chess thinking that ever existed. He lived a complete life, wasn't only chess nerd like Bobby and Garry.
@@triplight2781 Marshall did make some huge attacking mistakes, though. He had a really solid position at one point with the tempo and white had several pieces tucked away and useless. About 4 moves later white has developed his pieces and, well ,the rest is Capa's skills in how he maneuvered the mate.
winning is not everything... yes Marshall lost this game but he created something that is known with his name. His name will always live because of this brilliant move. Anyone would lost against this atack. anyone but not Capablanca... Capablanca is the best of all times..
I really like your videos. They go at just the right speed with just the right amount of variations and explanations for average standard enthusiasts, like me.
Great game! Thank you so much for the upload mato. Secret for ten years? Would have been a shame if marshall never got to use it. I am glad he did. I think marshall is undrerated. I usually see his losses, but rarely hear about his wins. Thanks again mato and bye for now
This game shows how Great was Capablanca! Against a new opening variation preprared during 10 years, He smashed it in minutes. That's why He is my favourite player of all times. :-D
As did I - had to watch the whole thing because the embedded video started at 7 minutes. Shout out to Zerohedge friends (use a slightly more sensible name there, but only just).
Dear Mato, this has been one of the most interesting chess videos I have seen in a long time. Thanks for letting us know the story behind the Marshall gambit. Too bad he still lost though! Capablanca was a monster OTB!
Hey Mato ur videos are amazing. Only to get u know that i am very busy with my final thesis and i only make small breaks to watch ur videos and drink a tea. Congratulations
Pretty funny. Marshall sitting around with his new gambit in his back pocket, waiting, meanwhile Jose is drinking and "kissing" his way through life, finally they sit down at the board and Capa solves the gambit over the board.
Mato is a professional chess commentator. His reviews are well-thought of. Unlike the other chess channel whom the commentator seems to be experimenting on his moves.
Gnwekor Agrwshe I beg to disagree English grammar guru! Review in dictionary also means analysis. Mato doesn't merely present the game. He does some deep analytic calculations as well. If you wanna watch basic presentation, better yet download the PGN's from popular games and watch the presentation yourself.
+Mahmoud Hachem The original gambit needed some tidying up, but the modern Marshall gambit remains one of the most formidable gambit sequences in chess... That Capa found a way out (even in the old gambit line) is testament to his genius.
MatoJelic on the position at 5:29, i have an idea.. what if you take the f7 pawn with the light squared bishop on b3? then black is forced to recapture it with rook takes on f7 and then white plays rook to e8, check. the only defending move possible is rook back to f8, then white captures f8 with his queen and it's check mate, right?
By the way, when I first discovered chess, I followed a few games played by Taal. I remember enjoying his flamboyant tactics; like a sleeping tiger, always playing very simply but often coming up with a 'killer' move. Could we see an analysis of a couple of his games? Thanks again, Mato.
Why not Bf7+, then Rxbf7, then Re8+, Rf8 blocking Check, then either Rxf8 or Qxf8? Thank you for all these wonderful videos - they occupy the majority of my Google+ Posts.
Very good analysis, as always, Mato. There are just too many questions! What do I do?? Maybe we could go for a coffee sometime!? Really, very well done. You make everything very clear, even to a bad player like me :-)
I think it's quite epic how Marshall took 10 years to refine his strategy. It was definitely a treat to see how Capablanca responded to it. It's unfortunate one of these players had to lose...
Mato, what did you mean at 5:50 when you said there was no time for the white rook to deliver the checkmate? It looked like the rook only needed one move to trap the black king on e8. The black rook defending couldn't deflect the attack because it was already under pressure from the white bishop, and obviously the black king can't retreat with the rook in possession of the back row and his own two pawns blocking him on the 7 file. Also that winning move from white wouldn't have put the white king in any serious danger from the attacking black queen and bishop, as clearly indicated. Just a curious suggestion, wasn't sure if you missed that unless you see something wrong with that move that I might have failed to realize.
Thank you for your comment, but I think that Mato is the best. Next year I will maybe come to Australia, Adelaide sounds attractive. I will bring the board. Shall we play Mato? ;)
@ 5:39 bf7 works then after rook captures on f7 the white rook on the king side can check the black king on e8 forcing the black rook back to f8 and capturing with either rook or Queen and white would still win the game. That was the second mate variation, you only covered one
Mato, i loved watching your videos. not only because youre a good commentator/narrator, but also the magical moves made during those days.. thanks for bringing them up 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
It's amazing how Mato makes everything look so dramatic!

Capablanca figured it out "over the board"; unbelievable!!
finally I found someone that speak well and go directly to the point, only few minutes and I watched the complete game, thanks
If I was Marshall and I kept this unheard of attack in my mind vindictively preparing for this for 10 years and I lost id be extremely pissed off lol.
@Paulo Eusebio I'd doubt my existence
Mato, you are brilliant. I randomly discovered your channel and now I cant stop watching. I've seen all of your videos. Great job, congrats !
Thank you. Can you please make that comment here: th-cam.com/users/MatoJelicdiscussion And here: chessschoolsa.wordpress.com/about-mato-jelic/

You have to give credit to both players in this game, it was a clever attack by Marshall and a brilliant defence by Capablanca.
except Marshall had been preparing this line for 10 years and Capa refuted it over the board.
@@triplight2781 Marshall did make some huge attacking mistakes, though. He had a really solid position at one point with the tempo and white had several pieces tucked away and useless. This was one of the most interesting games that I have seen in this channel. Thanks mato!
Briljantna partija i Vasa fantasticna opservacija...Hvala Vam Mato! Pozdrav iz Bgd. P.
I thought Marshall was going to win this game, since the name is deadly Marshall attack. Well, no wonder Capablanca is a legend.
+Samuel Castaño Against Capa..ablanca he should have come with an axe - # deadlyMarshallattack.
+sandeep nair He should have! Lol
yes, that really confused me too.
You weren't kidding when you said you were going to show a beautiful game.. Thanks , amazing video :)
winning is not everything... yes Marshall lost this game but he created something that is known with his name. His name will always live because of this brilliant move. Anyone would lost against this atack. anyone but not Capablanca...

What a wonderful piece of chess history! Against anyone but the supercomputer Deep Capablanca, this attack would have been devastating.
Great game! Thank you so much for the upload mato. Secret for ten years? Would have been a shame if marshall never got to use it. I am glad he did. I think marshall is undrerated. I usually see his losses, but rarely hear about his wins. Thanks again mato and bye for now
One of the best game so far !!!
Thanks Mato !

As did I - had to watch the whole thing because the embedded video started at 7 minutes. Shout out to Zerohedge friends (use a slightly more sensible name there, but only just).
capablanka/ "casa blanka" = white house
Frank James Marshall = Frank Marshal ( BO Real Father?)
check mate game over BO? GITMO Bay? lockup
Great commentary Mato! Loved this game
I LOVE the way you say checkmate! It's so chilling!
Man, thank you for the tips and the analysis, it really helped me understanding the Marshall Attack.
Thanks Mato for sharing such a beautiful game ...
I have watched this video many times... awesome analysis Mato..
And Julian Assange tweeted in today?
This is a great video Mato, very informative and entertaining. Keep up the good work!!!
Pretty funny. Marshall sitting around with his new gambit in his back pocket, waiting, meanwhile Jose is drinking and "kissing" his way through life, finally they sit down at the board and Capa solves the gambit over the board.
Very beautiful game. Thank you Mato.
One of the best Mato's lecture.
Another great video. Thanks!
I used to be a big fan of Bobby Fischer but I think Capablanca was really the best player in the History
best chess comentary I've heard of all other chess commentaries including Mato's own. made it so dramatic :)
Mato, I think I may have improved by watching your videos alone. Very informative and interesting. You have a new fan.
"Hi this is Mato""If you wish, you can pause this video and if you can try to find the best move"The best chess commentator ever! 😆
What a exciting game! Thanks for the help
Thank you
Free Julian Assange
excellent video mato!thank you very much....
Mato , I always like your videos before I see the game , I guess evryone do that cause evryone know how brilliant you are :D
I absolutely love your chess lectures, just amazing.
Brilliant game, brilliant analysis -- very instructive.
this is one of the best games ive ever seen
Mato, I like your videos a great deal and learn a lot from them.
Entertaining game and superb defense from the chess machine. Although a poor debut, this video inspires me to play the marshall gambit.
i made the like before i watched the video due to the title :)
mato we all love u , we wish u the best in life
Capablanka was a genius, to play so well against so strong - new then - attack/gambit! I lower my hat before him!
Mato is a professional chess commentator. His reviews are well-thought of. Unlike the other chess channel whom the commentator seems to be experimenting on his moves.

Thanks for this break down. Very interesting. Did we just see Julian Assange use the Marshall Attack to get out of the Ecuadorian Embassy?
Ohh the irony, poor Marshal prepared his attack for 10 years and lose in 10 min :)
Mahmoud Hachem like ski mountaineering. It takes you 3 hours to get to the top and 20 minutes to go down again. That's just how life is I guess…
+Mahmoud Hachem The original gambit needed some tidying up, but the modern Marshall gambit remains one of the most formidable gambit sequences in chess... That Capa found a way out (even in the old gambit line) is testament to his genius.
The game was not a rapid or bullet,so it probably took Calablanca 100 minutes to figure out all of Marshalls traps, not 10 minutes
Thank you explaining lines Mato. Please keep doing that.
Wow, Capablance defended so well against this great attack.
He really was a chessmachine :P.
Good video as always mato
Thank you for your comment
Wonderful! Thank you.
Capablanca once again . Omg Marshall held this opening for ten years wow that's crazy Mato...Mato ty so much .
mato is very cool ,and easy speaking -and simple---this is the best---thanx mato
Jose Raul Capablanca ✊🏻😍😍✊🏻 BEAST !
Very good game. Love the way Mato says "check---pause---mate" xD
When Mato says someone played a move and the other resigned , I feel as if I was playing .
Jullian Assange just tweeted a position from this game.
Q to FOX THREE
do you believe in coincidence?
I love the way you say "check mate"
Thank you Mato,exelent drama
Finally a worthy opponent for Capablanca! Amazing game

MatoJelic nevermind, i just realised that the king can go back to h8 after bishop takes on f7. was a good insight tho haha
at 5:28 what if b takes f8 and after king h8, rook e8
By the way, when I first discovered chess, I followed a few games played by Taal. I remember enjoying his flamboyant tactics; like a sleeping tiger, always playing very simply but often coming up with a 'killer' move. Could we see an analysis of a couple of his games? Thanks again, Mato.
I thought with the title and all, Marshall would win :) Great game Mato!
Why not Bf7+, then Rxbf7, then Re8+, Rf8 blocking Check, then either Rxf8 or Qxf8? Thank you for all these wonderful videos - they occupy the majority of my Google+ Posts.
I love this narrator! Subscribed'

+Oliver Groom h6 or g6
Gnwekor Agrwshe You are right, I just rewatched that part of the video and I can't believe I very stupidly overlooked that! My mistake.
well done mato,thank you.
Absolutely beautiful game
Capa's over-the-board refutation remains a great part of chess history.
Thank you for your comment, but I think that Mato is the best. Next year I will maybe come to Australia, Adelaide sounds attractive. I will bring the board. Shall we play Mato? ;)
At 6:10, if black played queen to h1 instead of bishop to h2, wouldn't it be checkmate ?
No because king takes knight
+Crackaine123 true.. Didn't see it.. Thanks
+Andrew Sp It's far from check mate, cuz white still have TWO moves, Kf2 or Kf1
+Nubian42 not kf1
Kxf2
@ 5:39 bf7 works then after rook captures on f7 the white rook on the king side can check the black king on e8 forcing the black rook back to f8 and capturing with either rook or Queen and white would still win the game. That was the second mate variation, you only covered one
I didn't expect Capablanca to turn this game around… wow
THANK YOU
thank you Mato , you are my best chess teacher
It's a treat to watch this game ! To me, this is one of the best in chess history. Those who 'dislike' this video, would you please tell, why ?
Bxf7+ didn't see this one, so brilliant move!
Very instructive!thanks mato..
the bishop sac on f7 seems to be possible earlier in the game when white queen still was on the same diagonal as black rook on a8?
Não dá pra acreditar que Capablanca escapou desse ataque, simplesmente épico! Mas o vencedor do jogo com ctz foi Marshall!
Thank you sir Mato
Fierce game by Marshall!
Beautiful game indeed!
Mato, where do you think he went wrong?
In the position held by black at time apprx: 6:11 is queen to h1 checkmate? ☺️
+Jonluke Summerfield No, Kxf2
Imagine that. Preparing the Marshall attack for 10 years..and then one day you launch the pawn onto d5. Amazing.
Fantastico match!
Capablanca, such elegance and thought. Mato, you are the guvnor!
you always pick the best games! continuation if at 6:10 Qh1+ ?
Very nice videos
Mato is the most interesting ... Chess commentator ... in ... the World.
Thank you. May God bless you with many grandchildren
