  • Queen Athalia had cannibalized part of the Temple for her Temple to Baal, and now that she is gone, the seven-year-old King Joash demands that money be raised for the temple's repair.
Unfortunately, the monies don't come in, mostly because the people don't trust the priests. Any extra money goes into their pockets.
23 years later (!), the temple is still not repaired -- so Joash and the High Priest, Jehoiada, set up a large box for offerings dedicated solely for the temple repair.
Once people are convinced that their offerings will go directly to the repair of the temple, money comes flowing in.
Towards the end of Joash's reign, he stops listening to the advice of Jehoiada, and, begins to listen to other elders. He turns away from God, and when Jehoiada son, Zechariah, challenged him, Joash had him stoned to death.
Meanwhile, up north in Israel, there are four generation of Kings in Jehu's dynasty, just as God had promised. They are all quite wicked, but some will still seek God when they are desperate.
As always, God delivers, but none of them every truly repent. In one instance, King Joash (of Israel), grandson of Jehu, tracks down Elisha, who is sick and dying. Joash is so distraught at the Syrians advance on Samaria that he asks for God's help.
Elisha has him shoot an arrow towards Syria and declares that God will deliver Israel. He then asks King Joash to shoot the rest of the arrows into the floor. Joash reluctantly shoots three arrows (most likely because it is a silly request), whereupon Elisha gets angry. When God speaks, we need to fully obey without reservation or rationalization. Because of Joash's half-hearted obedience, Elisha tells him that he will only have 3 victories against Syria.
