How Christian Bale BECAME A Psychopath

- If you know anything about Christian Bale you know that his preparation for a role is nothing short of extreme. Using a term called Method Acting, Christian Bale brought the character of Patrick Bateman to a whole new level for American Psycho. Without the amazing performance by Bale, American Psycho would not have the following it does today. Whether it's Christian Bale in American Psycho, Daniel Day Lewis in There Will Be Blood, or even Jared Leto as The Joker, Method Acting is a tool used by only a few actors today but it seems to bring out the best in all of their performances.

What's your favorite Christian Bale performance?
Probably "American Psycho", "Empire of the Sun", or "The Big Short."
Other than this masterpiece it would be the Dark Knight series, and The Fighter
The moment when most favourite Batman killed most hated Joker
The Fighter, The Machinist, The Prestige & Rescue Dawn
+1 for The Machinist
I think I saw it said best in a meme: “In American Psycho (2000), actor Christian Bale prepared for his role by reading his lines and rehearsing the scenes ahead of shooting.”
I heard that he even read the novel!
He broke new ground!

The irony of Gloria Steinem being so adamantly against American Psycho and convincing DiCaprio to drop out and that leading to her step son Christian Bale getting the role is hilarious to me
For me it's not Irony she did it on purpose
4D chess
Dicaprio carrer would has been very different, i think both him and bale came out winning here.
right that part confused me lmfao
It's probably more to do with the fact that DiCaprio had a young female fan base so a mature role like this would be inappropriate for him at the time. This was Bale's first big role and wouldn't leave an impression on a bunch of tween girls. That's probably why Steinem was flexible on that stance.
I love how Chris Nolan saw American Psycho and thought to himself, "That guy would make a great Batman."
BATeMAN
I mean, when you break down Batman, what is he? A guy who pretends to be a normal, charming socialite by day, but when the sun goes down he takes off that costume and becomes the obsessed, violent crazy person he is underneath.
Have you Eva seen “equilibrium”!! If you never seen it, I can’t amagin thet movie with out him!!
What people overlook about batman is that his desire for a peaceful gotham involves violence and dominance over thugs, two things patrick bateman also actively seeks in his life. The main difference between the two characters is that batman has principles which keep his desire for revenge in check
@@TheBloofyx This. I'd go so far as to say that you could make a reasonable argument that Bateman is what Bruce might've become had he not channelled his rage and sorrow into Batman.

Talking about him being immersed in his role, Bale didn't drop his American accent until the wrap party when filming was completed and apparently most of the cast and crew never knew or realized he was British and were just blown away.
Woahh so he was in role the whole time, impressive
Christian Bale wasn't acting. He wasn't even hired. They just followed him with a camera.
In a Forbes interview, he actually told how he got in character for the role. He said every morning he woke up and scrolled through Twitter for ten seconds, and then was ready to be a homicidal psychopath.

@EL AUTENTICO joke
I never understood why people get mad at actors for playing controversial roles like don’t they understand it’s not real life and they’re *cough cough* acting…. I swear some people are just idiots.
This is the drawback of the actor becoming too famous and popular. DiCaprio is one of those actors where, even though he’s excellent in his performances, you still see DiCaprio giving you a really good performance. We know who he is, how he thinks, what his lifestyle is, what he does, there’s not much mystery about him. It’s why many TV shows primarily look for unknown but talented actors to fill in the majority of the cast, with a couple of well known actors for credibility and marketing, they want audiences to see the character and not the actor. Bale is a strange case, because he is very well known, but he seemingly looses himself completely within roles, whether he’s playing a fat political puppeteer, a highly trained assassin, a narcissistic psychopath, or a moral and righteous superhero, he is so completely different where he can bypass that obstacle.
I think it’s hilarious that the woman who talked DiCaprio out of the role did it because of the violence against women in the film.
Like, brutally murdering a homeless man and stomping his dog to death was fine to her. But killing a woman was crossing a line 😂
I hope she never watches Lars von Trier’s “The house that Jack built”. It would probably give her a heart attack. That movie doesn’t spare anyone. Old people, women, children and animals. I am fairly desensitised to violence, but I have to say it’s the only time that depictions of violence alone have genuinely made me feel uncomfortable during a film. (I say that because graphic depictions of sexual assaults in other films have made me feel uneasy, but this film managed to do so without crossing into that territory).
@@numerum_bestia weirdly enough Leo later went on to do wolves of wall street. And if you have seen it then you already know what I'm talking about. But if you haven't then I'll say female characters in the movie are treated as a piece of poop

Well that's not necessarily true you become the character if you take it seriously, didn't the actor who played joker (can't recall his name) end up dying or like committing suicide as a result?
Something about method acting is extremely fascinating to me, I think in a different life it would be my perfect craft and artform, completely losing yourself in a role, the ultimate form of artistic escapism and borderlining on the obsessive artist trope - I love it so much
But being honest being a character off and on character idk it seems tiring like how do you know that once you stop being this character you’ve stopped being that character it scares me at times because I feel like I wouldn’t be able to be out of that character after playing him for so long
@@demon108hunter6 for shows, yeah, maybe - but movies take... 6 months at most?
Jesus died for our sins,if we turn from sin we'll be saved,Jesus is the only way not to go to hell
It should be noted that what most non-actors these days call "method acting" has basically nothing to do with the actual Method. Method acting isn't about literally becoming your character and staying in character even when off-camera/-stage, it's about "behaving truthfully under imaginary circumstances", as Lee Strasberg put it. That is why some actors give sub-par performances despite perpetually staying in character: Because they don't truly understand what the real Method even is.

@@niels1142 true but it's been a while before Leo got into those more violent roles
Leo was too much of a pretty boy at the time, and hadn't yet developed into the actor he would later become. He could have done it ten years later, but not then.
Bale didn't just have the character down; his face is a good natural look for the role.
The fact that Gloria Steinem was Bales stepmother is actually a pretty funny thing to think about, family helping each other out.
I've acted in several plays, and have experienced things similar to the sweating spoke of in the video. Especially with it being live, in the rare case someone sees you offstage (at least where I've worked), you HAVE to be in character. When you get attached to a character enough, you get to this point of empathy for them that you have to smack yourself a little to get away from them. It's the oddest experience, to feel so horribly upset or joyful over something that isn't even real. It's those feelings you feel and the mannerisms that come with it that truly make your character look real.
Then several years later, Leo got to play a psychopath in Wolf of Wall Street. Everyone wins.

Good method acting involves keeping the tone/mannerisms of the character while collaborating with the director and crew. Daniel Day Lewis on There Will Be Blood was noted as keeping the voice and mannerisms of Plainview in-between takes and on set but when talking to him you weren't talking to Plainview you were talking to Daniel Day Lewis.
This. It's not mailing dead rats to your costars. That's just being an asshole.
I think the method probably can evoke great performances but yes, keeping it civil and still remembering who you are throughout remains key. If you just go insane like Carrey did in Man on the Moon you just make everyone hate you and probably hurt the movie in the end.
@@RaptorJesus To be fair, most of the press tour shit is all staged and fake to create hype for a movie. You have a weird wackky movie with a method actor playing the joker, you spin up some outrageous stories, get the cast to tell them in interviews to make headlines.
Dead rat claim has been debunked by multiple sources.
It's mostly the same as with any production. Everything gets dialed up to 100 because you need to generate as much talk about the movie, and you want to stay in the newscycle for as long as possible.
@@hansvdz5834 Damn, they really fucked Leto over.

You like American psycho? The book was a little too graphic for my taste, but when the audio book came out in 93' i think it really came into its own, commercially and artistically. Pablo Schreiber's narration has a clear, crisp sound and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the book a big boost! It's been compared to catcher in the rye, but i think Ellis has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor. In 2001, lionsgate released this: American Psycho: uncut. The most accomplished adaptation. I think the undesputed best scene is the murder of Paul Allen. A scene so memorable most people probably don't listen to the commentary. But they should! Because it's not just about a homicidal psychopath brutally murdering people in cold blood, it's also a statement about the elite of society, and how they can essentially get away with murder! Hey Paul!!

Bale is a legend in the field, held back purely by his very weird selection of movie roles.
If we compare him to Gary Oldman who has done everything from drama to sci-fi, Oldman comes across as someone who knows how to choose his roles well. Christain Bale honestly has to be one of my favorite actors since even if he hasn’t always played in great movies (see: Terminator Salvation), he truly pushes himself as far as possible both mentally and physically in order to fully get into the mindset of his character. And it’s that level of dedication why I can truly respect his level of method acting, especially when he has a far more consistent track record than an actor who similarly does so such as Jared Leto.
He played the this role so well that I genuinely question if Patrick Bateman is far off who he actually is lol
People thought the same of Anthony Perkins with his role in Psycho.
I watched that movie so many times and i didnt even notice that his expression changes so abruptly at the chinese dry cleaning scene
One if the greatest movies of all time. And definitely one of the great scenes is Kimball's meeting with Bateman. The director using 3 different cuts to show Willem Dafoe as being suspicious, indifferent, and clueless was pure genius, it really elevates the tension in that scene.
This is why he’s my absolute number one favorite actor. He consistently brings something extra to his performance to a level that not many can touch.
This movie is, by far, Christian Bale's greatest performance, imo. I watched it with a friend, expecting it to be just another boring thriller. I was rivetted the whole way through, a rare pleasure being someone who has watched too many movies in my life. Aside from Bale's performance, the movie itself was just so expertly (I will even go so far as to say "perfectly") directed and put together (I'd have to watch it again to check, but have zero criticisms of it that I can recall, a rare thing for me). Another great movie I always remember Bale for is Empire of the Sun. He was an exceptional talented child actor.
The best advice I ever got is ''sometimes you just got to let the text speak for itself''
As an actor you always want to give, modify and portray everything. But alot of those moments inbetween emotional or action scenes can be left as is. This really just put a lot of weight off my shoulders.

They point out Bale's expression changing as he leaves the dry cleaners. There's a funny scene later in the movie where Detective Kimball compliments Bateman's building and Bateman thanks him with a polite smile that changes to a glare a half second later.
Method can get a bad rap, but for a lot of actors, becoming the character is the best way to embody them. There often isn't a need to go to the point of being the character 100% of the time (especially when you're on break), but for some shoots, staying in character could be essential for an entire shoot day to maintain an emotional state.
Acting is not easy.
It's fine as long as you're not being a dick to your fellow cast and crew. Another example of this is Dustin Hoffman taunting Meryl Street about the recent death of her fiancé on the set of Kramer Vs Kramer to get an emotional reaction out of her. She didn't ask him to do that and I'm sure she was perfectly capable of getting to the emotional state she wanted for the scene in her own way. It's one thing to be method yourself, but to decide to push it on someone else in such a horrible way really isn't ok

Looking at the ying and the yang of different actors, on types of acting, quite often we'd consider that stereo-type casting. When I look at Chris' movie catalog, he rarely goes against method acting with the only film that even remotely begins to move him in the other direction would have to be The Fighter. A good example of a movie that should not have method acting would be something like Back To The Future. Yes, everyone says that Michael J. Fox is Marty Mcfly, but this is the reason that Zemeckis and Gale had to let go of Eric Stoltz, he was putting a method spin on the character.
