Though China does not control or administer the Panama canal, a subsidiary of a Hong Kong-based CK Hutchison Holdings has long managed the two ports located on the two entrances of the canal at the Caribbean and Pacific end. These ports are repeatedly being leased to the same Hong Kong firm.
China easily monitors the US Naval activity. The US navy enjoys "Priority passage" through the Panama, though. Trump sees this as a threat to US sovereignty.

And just how does he plan on taking control of the canal? Threaten sanctions or military force? If Trump does anything Panama will just block all American ships from using the canal. Trump thinks he can tell other countries what to do and they should just tremble in fear.

@@spaman7716 We won't. We just would let the US try to maintain and use a Canal that has a steep learning curve with no trained engineers in their system (a mix of tech that no longer exists and current tech, so confusing AF). Also without the trained captains that know the currents and safe routes in the Gatun Lake and rivers. Oh, and don't forget the contracts and alliances we've built as a NEUTRAL country for the last two decades. Will the US ever get it right? Of course. Eventually. After the cost and damage spikes up and their international reputation suffers from bullying one of the smallest, but very active neutral trading hub. Don't forget the possible loss of trade and lives should untrained captains try to move boats in areas so hard to navigate you need years of learning to get it right. What is the US going to do? Invade the country and enslave the engineers and workers of the Canal? You know. Like Russia or China would do.

As someone who worked in the shipping industry for over 20 years I can emphatically say the US is NOT being ripped off by Panama. First, there are very, very, very few US registered vessels and the ones that are still in service carry USA-AID cargoes that do not route their route through the canal. SECOND, while some goods destined to the US do go through the Canal most goods come from Asia and Europe AGAIN, not passing through the Canal. And finally it is the shipping lines that pay the tariff not the government of the receiving country. The tariffs are figured into the freight charges. Oh BTW, it was under Trump's watch that freight charges started to skyrocket and he stood idly by and did nothing.
