Honestly I think within the next 20 seasons. Teams are just going to be from positions 1-5 6'6-6'9 with obviously outliers being shorter or taller. But it seems like the way the NBA is headed its skilled position-less basketball. A lot of the best teams already dont have traditional bigs. Warriors, Heat, Celtics, Bucks, Rockets. I think that's just the way the games going.
@@peacegawd5192 Thats why I said outliers being shorter or taller which I think will be rare and most likely the best players on the team. Aka 7fters being insanely skilled are the KD, Akumpos, and Porzingis. The shorter players being like Curry, Trae Young, CP3
@@mxp6725 completely agree. Talent pool is still growing. I am curious about how far the center will go towards the mobile, all-switching players. And again with the outliers, I think there will always be spots for near 6ft players. The simple reason being that there is only so many 6'6"-7ft people and out of them there are only so many mobile, healthy and skilled ballers. But there are lots of near 6ft people and lots of them are mobile, healthy and skilled. And the ultra skilled will likely still have spots on teams. On another point this is why it bugs me when fans talk about the old days and how tough they were. It was more physical due to the size of the bigger players. Blocks at the rim. Clogged lanes. But those guys would still be here if it was an effective way to play. Fact is, they couldn't make the rotations or run shooters off the 3pt line. So now, they can't play.
@@benw7367 I agree. Gilbert talked about this in another episode about how the defense back then wasn't actually defense. It was guys fouling more often cause they couldn't guard the best players. Every there has been more and more highly skilled NBA players. Back in the 90s there were less well known players. Basically like some teams did not have all stars. Now every team has like 2. But as for the level of defense back in the day. It was that there was less skilled guys taking more contested mid range shots. Which are not very high percentage.

Exactly. It’s positionless basketball but it’s not at the same time. People say LeBron just started playing PG this season. Nope, he’s been a PG his whole career. That’s what I love about this game, the versatility is light years ahead of 20 years ago never mind 30.
When positions were invented, they were named based on defense. Guards defended the perimeter, centers protected the middle (zone defense). Coaches who remember this were probably first to get into position-less offense

I’m a 5’8 white guy and when I play pickup games with my friends who are 5’10+, I play power forward. I’m an awful shooter but I get all the rebounds and defend their biggest players. Also, my post up game on the low block surprises a lot of people lol. Heart over height.
Chill Gill just dropped a bomb. As much as I know about basketball,it never occured to me that Lebron doesn't have a first step like MJ,Dr.J or even Kobe. That's deep
Once the game evolved to longer jump shots, he became obsolete. He still had skills they were just no longer valuable. More 3’s and less layups. His role as a rim protector became nonexistent
So, What is Ben Simmons? Ben Simmons is a 1. He guards 1s. He runs the offense like a 1. When the Sixers played him at the 4, it was because they were hiding him and trying to free up space on the court. When Sixers moved Shake Milton to the 1 in the bubble, Shake still wanted to defer to Ben as the 1. Ben just creates offense when the ball is in his hands. His vision makes him a 1 and not just a very good passing big.
@@gfbs7004 -- We know that but the discussion isn't about jumpshots; it's about positions. Before you say PGs need jumpshots; my opinion is all positions need jumpshots. We are just talking about skill sets, size, and position.
LeBron can't play traditional 3? I'd say he can consistently play as the 1, 3, and 4, but also play the 2 if he has a hot shooting hand and the 5 if he's matched up against a small ball line up. Not sure how Gil's train analogy disqualifies him from being able to play a traditional 3.
It generally there less skill to play 4-5 then 1-3 especially the 1. But I notice some comments are speaking as if skill big grow on Trees. It's most often that smaller players happen to be more commonly talent to play 1-2.
Idk we’ve seen some death lineups come out with short centers and pfs like golden state mia and shit and the only team you really needed a big center and pf for this year was the lakers but they also had bron running the one so just too much height
With today’s rules positions don’t exist anymore. It’s man vs zone. Pick n pop swing and drive. Position happened when you could actually play defense. Take that away and everyone is playing pg in a 5v5.

Yea, some coaches can’t overlook how they learned basketball to see what players truly are. It stunts growth.
The 6’8” point guard with the 6’8” 2 and 6’9”- 3 is what Jason Kidd had envisioned with Milwaukee when they drafted giannis and maker
