I really love that sail white. It creates a lovely warm foil for the cooler grey kitchen cupboards. But the light colour really reflects light in all directions. You make me wish I'd investigated velux skylights too ... Your kitchen inspired me, though, to spring the extra dosh and get the profiled (shaker style) cabinets for my kitchen (in my house being built). Mine too is also grey, but I think its got a touch more 'biscuit' brown to it. My island is not as deep as yours, and I'm jealous - it will be such a draw space in the middle of your main living area - & that beautiful big sink. I do have one question - I know in America, England & Australia we all call the 'wall' construction something different. I notice the brits call it 'plaster board', the Americans say 'dry wall' or 'sheet wall' & in Australia we call it 'gyprock' (which is a brand - like the way people say 'band-aid' or 'hoover'). But ... my question is this, as I haven't been able to figure it out ... the joins & the skimming & the coating prior to painting ... why does so much go into it? In Australia, we apply the panels (or as we say 'gyprock') to the joists with stud adhesive, and then fix with screws or nails. Each panel is butted up close to each other, but of course, there are fine joins. Those joins are taped & plastered over with some thin layers of fine plaster, as are the counter-sunk holes where there are nails/screws, & everything is then sanded flush with the raw panels. Plaster coats are not applied across the entirety of the new walls, only to those holes and joins - you just paint the gyprocks panels as they are (primer sealant, & then undercoat, colour, etc., depending on what paint system you're using). It seems in the UK, you cover the entire walls with plaster prior to paint. But I've seen an either or situation in the US - some 'mud' (plaster) the whole wall/s, but I've also seen some videos where they do as we do - tape, plaster & sand the joins & holes, then prime | undercoat | paint. Does anyone on either side of the pond up there know why its so different?
