Rolling out a red carpet for cyclists (Netherlands) [128]

  • Bicycle lanes in the Netherlands are red. They are like a red carpet for cyclists. They are not just a bit of paint. It is actually a thick layer of very smooth red asphalt. This video shows a road (Parklaan) being resurfaced in the city of 's-Hertogenbosch (a.k.a . Den Bosch). It makes clear how it is done. Four machines rolling down the street on a Sunday, Two with the red asphalt for the cycle lanes, two with black asphalt for the car lanes. The same night the white lines were painted on and the following day all traffic could use the street again.
Infrastructure like this makes cycling attractive and pleasant.

What an incredibly organized and proficient crew. Like ballet with many tons of machinery, plus, they wind up creating an incredibly smooth road. “Nice work” doesn’t come close to describing it. Fifty years ago I worked on an oil rig in the North Sea, and we were always happy to receive the Dutch service boats. They were neat and tidy, all cargo arrived on time without any drama, they worked hard and smart...all around, a class act. Hurrah Netherlands!

And they don't complain about poor people who genuinely can't work or can't find a better job, they complain at locals, immigrants, refugees taking advantage of our social system. Another large chunk of Taxes go to people like government officials and agencies.. e.g CBR and The Belastingsdienst, GGZ etc all organizations with massive problems. Officials who just hold meeting after meeting with very little conclusions.
And not to mention, the budget cuts to healthcare, police etc
I know it's been a year but they've also increased taxes on basic needs such food, medicine, gas, electric, water.. which fun fact THE POOR, MIDDLE CLASS, AND RICH ALL NEED.
At least I'm trying to do something about it though, by volunteering, voting and joining a local political party

Here Italy the income tax is about 42%, it's very well known here that state employees do absolutely nothing because they basically CAN'T get fired, so politicians, the city mayors, public officials etc. do absolutely nothing, and the money that we pay for services go straight into their pockets. Our roads are terrible, there are potholes everywhere, cycleways connecting cities don't exist, public transportation is horrible. And while poverty and unemployment are rising, the European Union also wants us to accept and pay for the immigrants that want to come to Italy!

The road signs when reconstruction is starting are placed along the side of the track two weeks in advance. The detour signs, the traffic wardens, the barriers and fences, are all in the bid for the reconstruction. The only thing the municipality has to do is advertise in the local papers where in the coming week the road reconstructions are and give a permit for the road reconstruction. Our normal road direction signs are blue with white letters, the signs for reconstruction and detours are always in yellow with black letters. It is a very efficient and clear system.

Wished theyd just create green colored cement or asphalt for the bike lanes again tho. Your bike lanes are he same color as my city's sidewalks tho so.

Where I live there are few bike lanes, and recently they’ve been painting them green. I’m not a fan of that as when it rains or there’s condensation the paint becomes slippery so I end up having to ride out of the bike lanes so as not to slide and wipe out.

Cycle lanes in asphalt usually don't get a lot of load, so if no cracks occur, frost damage really isn't worse than an equal lane in black asphalt.
Red asphalt is practically no different than black asphalt, albeit that transparent bitumen is used instead of black bitumen, an red granulate (mostly porphyry) instead of black or grey granulate. Th transparent bitumen is what makes red asphalt two to three times more expensive than black asphalt.

In France most of the new bicycle lane aren’t plane. Because they are using machine to big for the work. So we get narrow bike lane with lot of bump !
