Hi Rick, thanks to this vid on youtube I managed to replace the alternator of my Alfa 156 v6 myself. Most recommend lowering the engine far enough so that the alternator mounting bolts can be removed. I didn't like that, since I don't have a bridge and just like you have to reach everything on the jack and axle stands from the bottom because of the risks. so loosening the rear engine mount or actually differential mount and a third jack underneath raises the engine enough to also remove and reassemble the top bolt of the alternator. Since I don't have such a nicely painted subframe as you, I partially lowered the subframe and created extra space with a lever to get the alternator out. all in all, a beastly work indeed
Mines gone on the same car I just bought, result of car is in amazing kick. Alternator supply and fit £540 including VAT all in at my local Alfa garage, had one go on my 156 v6 of a similar age. I’m happy as I thought it would be £700 plus with the labour
5 years ago I bought a 96 spider. first thing that went was the alternator. 3 years ago I bought a 2002 GTV. first thing that went was the alternator. I think it's fair to say that now is the time that a lot of the original alternators maxed out their life expectancy

Doing the best for your car as a precaution feels a bit like a punishment because of this. but in the end I also discovered the cause of the alternator's premature failure. a parafan drain hose discharged the water above the alternator. fine work by garage mechanic. I suppose they got the clip off the hose and didn't put it back neatly
Replacing the alternator on the 916 Alfas is a nightmare whether TS or V6. If for any reason you have the subframe off or engine out replace the alternator!
Correct. At the very least I thought getting mine 'serviced' would have been ok. Lesson learned. New alternator on order. I imagine the labour on this would be rather expensive if you’re paying a garage to do it.
You did the right thing by taking off the subframe - once you done it a couple of times it becomes easy, and the access it gives you so much better than any of the shortcuts methods which probably end up taking more time and scuffed knuckles. Its uncanny, my Bosch battery was not powerful enough either (no enough amperage).
Indeed. If a job is worth doing then it’s worth doing properly. Any attempted shortcut would have just taken a load of paint off my subframe. In terms of the battery, the Bosch in this video is the new one haha

Hi, I have an issue with my GTv here in nigeria, it has movement issues, I’ve change the coils, fuel pump and filter, plugs and also checked the fuel lines but it’s jerks while in gear and doesn’t go up to 20. please I need help on what to do.
What a bloody nightmare! I’ve never seen anything like it, there must have been a better way for AR to design the alternator position!!!😱 Anyway, well done👍🏻👍🏻
Just come across this channel when I searched for how to change an alternator. I’ve got a GTA and my alternator is actually over charging😩. Stunning GTV. At least all the bolts come off easy; I hate think what’s it like with bolts that haven’t been removed in years. What are those stands you have? They look as though they can be stacked. Got a link for them?

Don't risk it if engine is out or sub frame off replace with new alternator!
Hello Rick to take out the starter motor, do you need to remouve the exhaust manifold?
I would say so yes. You would have a really hard time trying to do it with the manifold in place
