Refrigerator with clicking noise problem.mp4

  • My GE side by side refrigerator started making evenly spaced clicking noises. This lasted for a couple of days. I traced the noise to the back of the refrigerator and specifically the main circuit board. It is probably the relays on the board that was making the noise. The board finally burnt out and the fridge stopped working. Using the model and serial number of the fridge, I ordered a refurbished board on Ebay for $68 including shipping.
    I swapped out the board and lucky for me, the refrigerator started humming and everything came back on. Make sure your fridge is disconnected when you are working on it.

    @wtam69 I have the exact circuit board after i reviewed your video again. The problem is that the house is getting sold as a shortsale (the bank did not want to refinance) and the closing is the 28 of this month but i did unplugged the refrigerator for an hour and plugged back on the clicking went away. But i will let the new owner know how to fix it without tapping my pocket.!! Your vid was a BIG HELP. thank you

    Looking at the board, the large caps are the input side to the switch-mode p/s, but it looks like the caps on the low voltage side were tell-tale bulged. My theory is the clicking you heard was actually the control board repeatedly safety shutting down and coming back up. All this cycling looks to have fried the switching transistor which would sit where the burn is. That board can probably be repaired for about $20 USD.

      Remember if the evaporator motor makes weird noises, you should replace that as well. The motor can cause the relays on the board to fail. Just buy a used board and replace the motor as well. Can probably do for less than $100 if you can find the parts. I go to eBay for the used or new parts.

    You're probably right about the caps. When I heard a zap and burnt smell, that was my cue to replace something and the whole board was easier than trying to diagnose specific parts. Thanks for your input because when it fails next time, and it will, I'll know the options.

    @malcabro Yes it's the relays. Even with the new board, there are a few clicks when compressor switches on. I think that is normal. If the click doesn't stop, then you have a problem. If that is the case, order a new board before the old old fails completely. Good luck and let me know how it works out for you.

    perhaps its normal operation, i've had it for a long time so im sure it need some maintenance... the worst thing that has happened, is that the ice box tray got too frozen from moisture some how, so i readjusted the inner temp so its inside the box and its good. but i still hear the clicking on and off...

  • @peter11203

    You have to keep the condensor clean about once a year take the cover off and clean it. I would also keep it at least 6-12 inches away from the wall so it doesn't overheat.

    I got a refurbished board for about $69 . Type in "WR55X10942-GE Refrigerator main control board" on Ebay search box. New ones are about $109 and up. They have made improvements in the board so they don't look exactly the same. Just make sure you have your model and serial number and see if the board matches yours. I cannot vouch for the quality of the refurbished one except to say that my fridge is still working. I hope this helps and good luck. Let me know how it turns out.

    Sorry to hear that. It could be your compressor, start relay (or capacitor) or overload protector. The start relay and overload protector is covered in a box attached to the compressor. If you have a capacitor, you have to discharge it or it can shock you. Ask someone who knows how to check the relay to see if it's good. If it's the compressor then you're out of luck.

    too bad you didn't hold the camera steady enough over either board for us to get a look at the section that burned up. I suspect that it had to do with the latching/unlatching of a weak coiled relay. The unlatching really can reek havoc with the other components in the circuit.

    I am repairing a GE refrigerator that makes this clicking sound every 1 second and does not run. But I looked at the mainboard and didn't see any damage. I did hear an irregular sound at the evaporator fan, one week ago; so this time I disconnected the fan and IMMEDIATELY the compressor started and the clicking sound stopped. When I connected the fan, the refrigerator stopped working again. I think the problem is a short-circuited fan motor and not the mainboard. The fan motor reads 0.1 ohm between red and white, and the fridge reads 13V at this points, so I think the fan is overloading the board.

    • @wtam69
      @wtam69  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I replaced the evaporator fan a couple of months ago when it made a whining noise. The fan can make the relays malfunction although mine never did that. The fan is not difficult to replace so you might want to do that.

      My GE fridge, MBC12 bottom freezer has been making clicking sound for the past couple days and tonight the fridge started to not cooling (but freezer seems to be working). Do u have any idea what happened?

    • @wtam69
      @wtam69  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      *****
      Check to see if the evaporator fan is turning. If not, then the fridge part won't be cold. It could be the fan malfunctioning (check to see if it's iced over) causing the relays to click or go bad. The relays are on the main control board and the board is about $100. The evaporator fan about $30. You can either replace the fan (depending on which is bad) or the board or both.

    • @Vlum88
