@@CantTellYouNope, "Manson lamps" has been a saying in the US since back when Charles Manson ordered his group of flunkies to kill all those people back in 1969. In most of the photos & TV coverage, Charlie would give this crazy-ass stare to the cameras. Those dark, beady eyes were the "Manson lamps". I don't know who first coined the phrase, but it's sure gotten a lot of mileage. I've heard it all my life, & I'm getting mighty close to 60 years old. Ugh, it really hurt to type that, LOL. All the best to you. 😊

I live in Dannemora. What a scary time this was for us. There's a siren that was supposed to go off if an inmate escapes, but it never went off. Road blocks, helicopters, and we were scared. What a horrid June that was. Thx for re-telling it so well.

Same thing happened to us when that pick axe killer escape from a prison bus in Texas a while back. My woman works right of the same highway some miles down the road. I was terrified picking her up and dropping her off until they finally caught him. He ended up getting that family grandparents and grandchildren. It was definitely a scary time for everyone around.

    • @-Lana-L
      @-Lana-L 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

I cant imagine just throwing up a sign saying dont pick up hitchhikers. Holy moly. Like anyone would do that on a normal day anymore. Instead it should say escaped convict. Be aware of your surroundings and be cateful. Living near prisons is a peculiar thing most ppl dont think about. Take care! @dizzymindy6024

i worked at the summer camp up the road from dannemora and my lanta that was a terrifying summer. We only got security detail when the campers arrived, and we routinely had troops stop by to search the grounds. We coped by making t-shirts (the counselors) at the end of it all, absolutely terrifying.

I'm from Bombay NY. My mom worked with Tilly and Lyle installed the ceiling fan in my parents bedroom. I don't think it's fair to put all the blame on Tilly. Why were these two on the Honor Dorm? Started digging in February and not a single guard caught it? If you live there you know what was going on with the prison guards at the time. I just couldn't believe they weren't eaten alive by the black flies in June!!

James Earl Ray was sent to Brushy mountain here in Tennessee after he was convicted of murdering MLK Jr. It's deep in southern Appalachia and the property surrounding it is a wildlife preserve, with cougars and black bears. He escaped and they eventually found him a day or two out in the forest. When they found him he allegedly said "boys I sure am glad you found me" haha. There was some other inmates that got loose but not too much fanfare on finding them, escaped a work detail and city boys. The area they fled, if the mountain doesn't get you, the hillbillies will.

I would sleep in the car at night, go into a restroom at a service station and clean up in the morning, get my cup of coffee and start doordashing all day. It made the day go by quicker and I made money. It took a while but I was finally able to save enough to get a place. But there’s one where a lady married an inmate serving life. She moved across the street from where he worked in the fields. One day she drives up to the fence, he tossed down the hoe, or rake whatever, and he took off for the fence where she opened fire on him, of course, the guards opened fire on her. They had planned the whole thing from the jump. My bff’s Dad was the local Justice of the Peace for years. He’s the one who they got married in front of. I’m sure Google has all kinds of stories like this. But as long as i’ve been a True Crime fan i’ve never ran across any coverage.

As a teen I was in a foster home with David sweat , it’s sad because he always had serious problems but was very intelligent. He had to be because of his upbringing, he is a product of Broome county’s environment. It’s a sad situation for everyone and there is many more of these same stories only different names and dates

Ricky Matt walked so Casey White could run.
    Literally.
I highly recommend Dannemora, the mini series about this case.
Patricia Arquette, Benecio Del Toro and Paul Dano play the 3 mains.

20:25 prison officer gave inmates burger that contained hacksaw bits and tools inside.
Reminds of cartoons where they hide a file inside a cake.

23:58 all i can think about are fishermen and their prize catch. It'd be funny if they had a hook in his mouth and a scale in the picture lol

There was a *great* HBO miniseries about this a few years ago, "Escape at Dannemora." Fantastic cast--Benicio del Toro, Paul Dano, Patricia Arquette--and ably directed by Ben Stiller. Highly recommended!
