  • Full review of the 25mm 1.7 Panasonic Lumix G H-H025 ASPH its beginning to look like budget lenses are no longer something to turn your nose up at for image quality. build materials? yeah turn up the nose but everything is plastic these days. I think if a person is looking for the best lens for street photography this is dare I say the perfect tool for the job, I mean it when I say a 3 thousand dollar Leica lens's images look no better.

      Hello Thomas thank you, yeah I really want to make reviews that leave no stone unturned. If i click on a video review I expect to be shown all I need to know, just about respecting folks time. oh im working on a review of the 14-42 kit lens and another for the G7. I dont know how to go about reviewing that camera, too many features to cover. thanks for taking the time to comment and by the way my last name is Anderson also.

    Your review is like a template to do it right. Say the most with the right amount of words - all very gentle and calm, informative and personal.
    You lay out your own vision of photography in this video - the adept, humble spectator. ;)
    All in all a true gem...
    Oh... you mentioned you mind the intro and outro. I get it from a technical pov, but see them like blending out and back into reality... once the music kicks in its total focus on the materia. That minor imperfection makes it even better - just opinion.
    Kind regards from Austria

      @Raychristofer  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello LF how are you? I really appreciate you taking the time to say those sincere words. Means a lot because these lens reviews sometimes can take me a month to put together. If I could do this over I would have used a proper mic for the intro and outro though. My wife always wants it to visit Austria to stand on the mountain side and run through those green grass fields

      Doing great, hope you too!
      Yeah, the tone could be better, but with the same street background noises.
      I can relate to your effort since starting doing some videos on my own. First one took about 2 weeks from 1st take to final cut (not the one uploaded on this channel). It's hard to see that effort as an outsider, that's for sure. I think it's good you hint to retakes and such... too polished videos often are discouraging for "newbies" in their perfection. They often also lack real character.. while you show being totally cool with messing up several times. It's all about - well - "keeping it real" ;)
      Can also relate to your msg with the lens. Got the 25mm as my first prime (shot DSLR before, but more or less as an underappreciated hobby. You want it, you get it... and then you sit on it, so no primes ;). I wanted to use the 25mm, I wanted to like it... but somehow I didn't really find its use and went with the 60mm oly most of the time for portraits and Leica zoom for everything else.
      Just getting started with using MF on a regular basis... - needed to find out that AF is just a compromise for comfort when shooting video. It ends in disappointment nearly everytime.
      If you and your wife ever make it to Austria, drop me a line and I will point you in the right direction. :)
      We (as a family) kind of made it our mission to capture the natural beauty of our surrounding. Let's see how that turns out as we improve the "craft".
      Cheers & all the best

    Greetings from the UK. I bought this lens after watching this review a couple of months ago. I use it on my Olympus OMD-EM10 mk2 which has excellent stabilisation. The Lumox 25mm F1.7mm has become my favourite lens and I use it constantly. I also bought the Lumix 42.5mm as well so I'm well pleased. Thank you for an excellent review.

      Thanks! I’m shooting a promo video for a slightly anarchic band in December and how it performs will form a big part of my opinion.. in the meantime it’ll be used for portraits of the kids in the (very cold) countryside, which I imagine it’ll also be adept at. I have the Olympus 45 1.8 which is a beautiful lens but too long to be a good all rounder. Great to talk to you again.

    Fully agree. Use this lens for mainly low light or portraits. It’s fantastic and best part I got it free when I bought my G7.
    Sadly yes it feels cheaper and manual focus is a pain but I get over that. I also avoid video on this as without some kind of gimbal or tripod it’s bad. Else it’s my main go to lens for close ups whenever your at a party with lots of people.

    • @metalmick99
      @metalmick99 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Ray, I'm a bit unsure right now. It's a consideration, but I want to get my camera first (it's due in a few days). Or rather my wife's camera - a shiny new GX-9 - it's a gift for her. In Australia, the camera only comes with the rather ordinary 12-32 zoom rather than the 14-60 (I could be out a little there) zoom. I've got her a 50-200 zoom for it, and would like a 30mm macro lens as well, and that ought to be an okay kit. I enjoy photography and had a darkroom when I was 15 (45 years ago!), But my wife loves it and is getting into it in a big way, I think. I have an FZ1000, which is great, and the GX9 is an upgrade of her LF1 point-and-shoot, which we'll keep. I lugged a Sony DSLR through Thailand with 4 lenses a few years back and promptly sold it on return, for something more portable. I'll think on the answer to your question and post a real reply when I've decided. All the best, Ray.

    • @metalmick99
      @metalmick99 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Ray, I decided against the 25mm lens. A 30mm macro came up for sale for a bargain price. I've checked-out the 12-32 and its resolution isn't too bad and reviews are usually complimentary. I was considering a 14-42 pancake or a regular-sized 14-42 (AUD$150/USD$110-ish second-hand in pristine condition) all of which got some excellent reviews. I know the 25mm will give great results and the bokeh on the kit lens isn't anything to shout about, but my (tight-fisted) wife will use and enjoy the kit and macro for a while. GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome) may kick in after a while, but we'll see. Thanks again for an excellent review and if you find yourself heading to Melbourne (Australia), sing out it - would be a pleasure to meet you.

    • @Raychristofer
      @Raychristofer  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Michael Pless Michael my Australian brother good to hear from you again LOL. I think a prime lens is super smart, you'll be able to do a lot with that 30mm especially portraits and getting people in their environment and because you have good background blur it won't look like an iPhone photo like many kit lens photos do. If you're on a budget for a wider lens the sigma 19mm is about 150.00 . Definitely share your pics with it and as you can see it's fun shooting reviews once you get to know about a piece of equipment so you may want to try it. By the way what brand is it and is it the 1.4 or 2.8

    Thanks Ray - really appreciate the very approachable and low key way you present your video. I have a Canon 6d for stills that I love, but I got a GX85 with this lens a little bit ago for a light kit to take on family trips and trips with my boys Scout troop. I've really been enjoying it for making me think more about my shots, and with the built in GX85 stabilization, it overcomes one of your big concerns - now I have a great fixed lens that with the camera, gives with 5 axis stabilization in photo or video!!! Hello from New Zealand!
    This is probably one of the most concise reviews on the 25mm F/1.7 on YT.
    I use this lens as my daily and while it's relatively small still vs the equivalent on other formats, it is a bit too big on my GM5 with the lens hood on but I like the lens hood on. Oh well, it's not the lens' fault the GM5 is extra tiny. The beauty of the MFT system is that, we are inundated with so many different size lenses on the same focal length so we are spoiled with choices.
    I am a fan of this focal length, though, especially when on the street. In doors, I find it a bit tight, which is why many choose the 17mm over this. Cheers again for the great review. Stay safe!

That's a very loaded question that is not simple to answer because someone can have a $10,000 camera system and if they don't know how to use it to make beautiful images they can not be successful and another person can use an iPhone and take a great fashion photo that can wind up on the cover of a magazine.

    Great video, thanks Ray! Also i liked the ending :D I wish I had this lens. I can't wait to try it with my Lumix G7, maybe some day. But it's expensive, too expensive for me now and I can’t call this a budget lens. In our country, they are considered (Panasonic lenses) expensive. Upset that there is no stabilization. And the G7 itself does not actually have it. Also I really liked the 4:55 footage. What was it filmed for? It looked very cool and cinematic. Do you use manual focus on the subject by tap the screen? It's really helpful on G7.
    You know, I love to hear you speak. Your conversational style sounds cool. I would like to learn how to speak like this, in English of course. Especially when you say something like: keep it real! :D

      Hello thanks Aleks. This is one of my highest viewed videos and it makes me feel good to know that all the time I put into it did not go in vain the shot at 4:55 with me mounting the lens I think that was shot with my gh1 in manual focus mode and I shot it for this particular video. a good thing to do when you're out and about with the camera is to shoot footage of unusual things and if you have a second camera or phone to shoot yourself using the camera . The time will come when you put together a video and you could use that footage.

      @@Raychristofer some videos bring real results after 3 years. All the effort is worth it, especially when you try to do it well. Trends are changing now on TH-cam, and large long episodes, if interestingly done, can be more profitable than videos under 15 minutes. Here's what I've learned lately. But, it is important to take care of the quality of the video, which is extremely difficult for me. On the old channel, I have a video that I recorded as training for the features of one game while playing it. 5 years later, when I had already stopped doing all this, the video gained one hundred thousand views and is relevant to this day. I was surprised. So your video has already collected almost 100 thousand views in three years.

    • @Raychristofer
      @Raychristofer  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello for a first lens I recommend an electronic one because there are times you will need autofocus. to save money a good affordable one is the Sigma 19mm 2.8 that I reviewed a few years ago. also the panasonic 25mm 1.7 is mandatory and you can find it for 150.00 on sale sometimes. I love manual focus for photography but you can use both for video. its just that many times I stand in front of the camera to talk and I need it to autofocus on me and its harder to do that with a manual focus. its best to focus on a tree or pole and stand next to that if you go with the manual focus.

This is the lens I use when I'm shooting talking head videos because you can shoot It Wide Open get that blurred background and still have sharpness. Actually I usually shoot it at f2. Also try using it with continuous autofocus mode and it's great because it will not post like some lenses do when you're sitting in front of the camera. The manual focus no as I said is pretty useless to me I don't even use it anymore LOL. Thanks for taking the time to comment

      Raychristofer do you think its an all arounder prime? because it seems like it.
      i have a 24mm and 50mm on an APSC. and i am longing on the middle focal like a 35mm which is 50mm equivalnt on apsc sensors.
      24mm is too wide and the 50mm is too zoomed for me.

    • @Raychristofer
      @Raychristofer  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      For some reason I cant call it an all around, too many times I go to use it and im wishing I could get more of the background or a slightly wider shot. that being said my wider sigma 19mm 2.8 cant blow out the background like this. I only use this lens when im trying to isolate a person doing their natural activities. its perfect for that. you pretty much have to get it especially for the price. actually if youre looking for that 35mm equivilant then maybe it would be perfect for what youre trying to do.

    • @dropyvisuals4355
      @dropyvisuals4355 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      oh i see, so you're saying that the lens cant be considered as an all rounder ''if you do not have time to move back a little more'' (to have more of the background) right ? but if you have the time and space ( like in staged shoots/portratis) i think it might be a one lens solution.
      plus you cant get bokeh easily when you come close. what ya think ?

    • @Raychristofer
      @Raychristofer  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      240 Films what's up bro, one thing to know is it's definitely not the camera because when I use my Sigma 19mm 2.8 it behaves just like a manual focus vintage lens it's so connected. I think they program these Panasonic lenses with some kind of acceleration mapping curve which is probably done by someone who's not a photographer. For that reason I mostly use the Panasonic lenses for still photos or video where I don't need to do a lot of rack focusing

    • @240Films
      @240Films 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hmmm yeah, very weird and annoying. I need to get some new lenses for my g7 any recommendations, I film a lot of car shows and I'm starting to do corporate work so might need something fairly wide for indoor but also fast aperture for better low light and bokeh any suggestions? I'm open to vintage lenses if they're not too soft etc. Thanks :)

    • @Raychristofer
      @Raychristofer  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      240 Films congratulations on getting paid work. If you're going pro like that I think the manual voigtlander lenses you can't go wrong. But if you need an electronic lens I don't think I have enough experience to help you with that. Because everyone has a different workflow.. The Vintage lenses are good for artistic effect but if you're doing professional paid work you need crisp stuff actually now that I think of it the manual Rokinon lenses are great quality for the price as well

    • @240Films
      @240Films 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I was thinking about the rokinon lenses as I don't get a lot of paid work only odd bits and don't get payed a lot but the rokinon seem like good value and seem fairly affordable for my price range :)

      For sport just make sure whatever you do your shutter speed is high enough to freeze what you need, sometimes you might choose to shoot 1/80th for a little motion blur for speed effect. its something you will learn as you go. sports is tricky you need a long lens sometimes then a wide one other times.

      Network Unplugged when I'm on a trip I usually take three but yeah changing lenses can be a drag and I have a love-hate relationship with the kit Zoom it's extremely Sharp but there's literally no depth of field so a lot of times I think it's best for shooting video because its stabilized or Landscapes at the wide end. But otherwise I never use it. 3 weeks ago I bought a rolleiflex medium format film camera it has a 75 mm lens which equals 50 mm in full-frame terms. It's actually liberating not having to change a lens sometimes and the shallow depth of field is more extreme and micro four-thirds

    • @networkunplugged
      @networkunplugged 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      well, yesterday evening, i grabbed this lumix 25mm lens and I made a few shots (as pritending it would be expensive film). I did so different pictures than i normally do with my kitlens at 25mm. I was limited, and I was focused in one special view. with zooms I want so different pictures, and I can get lost easily. Depth of field is not the smallest here but still "creative" and f1.7 is well useable. For video, I am trapped still with my gopros, as mainly I am the object of the video, the focus can be tricky. Thanx for your reply!

    This was a great review of this lens, I keep seeing videos about it but no one will actually show what type of work this lens is good for. I want to do photography with my G7 but I do not know what type of lens would be perfect for that.. or what type of lens I should be looking for in general considering I am still learning how to use my camera and all of the photography lingo that goes with it. Would you be able to give me some suggestions or specific lenses that I should do research on? The type of photos I like to take are of people outdoors surrounded by nature, whether its a meadow, on the mountains, or just in a grassy yard. After seeing this video this lens does seem like it will do well in a downtown setting, but will it be great for the outdoorsy type of photos or should I look for a different type of lens?

    • @Raychristofer
      @Raychristofer  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      935xmintx what's up 935 I really appreciate that. Let me think. If you want to shoot folks in their environment you can look at the Panasonic 20mm 1.7 it's great in low light. Or the 19mm signal 2.8 that I reviewed but it's not a very low light lens. You will gravitate to whatever focal length you prefer as time goes on. I recommend also a 45mm for portraits and blurring the background. Thanks for taking time to comment.

    Random question. When using manual focus on a lens does the little focus box on the screen matter? Or is that just for autofocus? I'm thinking in manual it doesn't matter just how much you turn the focus ring

    • @Raychristofer
      @Raychristofer  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello that is a good question on the camera there's a switch that turns to manual focus and then the focus box will disappear. It's still has the acceleration problem. The new full frame Panasonic has a setting in the menu where you can set the lens to linear focusing and you can even adjust how much rotation of the Ring
