    I have a Bachelor of Fine Art degree, but I haven't touched a brush in about 3 decades- I've been working entirely in 3d. My son got into Warhammer, so now I am learning to paint the figures, and you have inspired me to pull out the brushes and get back into traditional art. Thank you, your work is amazing.

    Outstanding presentation, demonstration, instruction skills. Clear, a lot of work goes into the narration, I can tell. And then there's the technique in this episode: I'm dedicated to learning how to paint miniatures, been working on it for one year. This technique brings the non-commercial (non-brand constrained) and art-based approach I'm looking for but not at a level that's beyond even a hardworking student (dividing the face of a 28mm miniature into a dozen zones and shades, for example). I enjoy your style and learn from your content, thank you Marco!

    what an amazingly inspirational video, thanks a ton mate. youve set off a whole series of ideas and theories in my head that i cant wait to try out. the way you are painting is how i paint on canvas to some extent, glazing with completely different colours to the 'base' colour build up a real complexity of tones that also unifies different elements when you start glazing a really small amount of purple into the skin here and then the same purple onto the jacket there, maybe a touch of it on the boots. why am i not doing that more on my minis? i need to step up my game.

    You made that free hand look so easy! The shields look incredible, my favourite being the octopus. I was really impressed with how the washes came out, when you started I thought the opacity was going to look way off but they've finished looking superb. Is that because of the final "filter" that you do? Next time I do pox walkers i'm going to use this method.

    • @MarcoFrisoniNJM
      @MarcoFrisoniNJM  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks!!! The final oil wash helps more for the dark definition, the opacity is built more through the layering of several overlapped washes 😉

  • @dddmmm21
    @dddmmm21 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Fantastic work as usual... One step of your workflow which I simply cannot make it work well is the oil wash part. When dry my minis always look dirty and sandy and I can see a runny streak of small dots. I believe it is because I am not removing the excess with the q-tip, but that is the other challenge... I always feel I remove too much (almost everything) when using the q-tips, even if applied very softly, these minis are so small that I find difficult to remove the oil wash from the surface without removing also from the crevices... :-(

    • @MarcoFrisoniNJM
      @MarcoFrisoniNJM  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks a million!
      You have that kind of effect of you put too much white spirit in the mix cleaning all the oil and leaving the pigments free to dry as a fine dust 😉. Try to clean when the oils are dry to the touch, this helps to regulate better the quantity you are taking off the model

  • @Grey9200

    i would really like to see some Star wars legion minis from you. With the airbrush or without, dosnt matter to me. maybe some rebels and some storm troopers :D the legion minis are quite simple compared to the things you usually paint and that is the reason why i would like to see some from you. the usual legion painters on youtube do a basic paint job and throw some wash on. i hope you could come around and try that when you have the time!

    Hey @MarcoFrisoniNJM , questions around oil use. I've seen lots of people recommend a gloss varnish prior to help improve oil flow, but I did see one video where you said you don't do this. Do you finds not necessary?
    given oil takes more time to dry, how long do you wait till you apply acrylics over the wash? again many tutorials say you can't paint over them, and I think you're the only one i've found that does!

  • @WiqdYT

    it seems like that white spirit dosnt like metalic acrylic paints. i put a oil paint wash on some metalic parts and the WS made it curdle and gummi like and made it look quite ugly. the paint was dry for a few weeks so idk what happend. used army painter metalic paint and some "mild odour" WS

    How would you compare Kimera Kolors to your experience with Liquitex Acrylic Gouache? Or how about with artist's fluid acrylics?

    • @MarcoFrisoniNJM
      @MarcoFrisoniNJM  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi! They are quite similar in terms of concentration of pigments but Kimera have a bit more body and definitely more covering power; Gouache has more a watercolor feel but it's awesome for glazes!!!
      Similar situation with artist's acrylics (I prefer the heavy body version and I have a drawer full of them 😁😁😁; you can easily dilute them to a fluid consistency so they are more versatile!); the biggest difference is again in the covering power!

    Do you find the longer you leave the paint on the wet pallet, the thinner/transparent it gets due to water absorption?

    • @MarcoFrisoniNJM
      @MarcoFrisoniNJM  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh yeah this is part of the wet palette trick, but if you make it in the right way and you prepare a good amount of paint this doesn't have a significant effect on your pools and mixes

    Off topic question. I saw your panel line technique on the imperial fists video, and I was wondering: could it be done with normal acrilics and a bit of dish soap? Because the key is breaking the surface tension and I remember doing it with dish soap from an early chemistry experiment

    • @MarcoFrisoniNJM
      @MarcoFrisoniNJM  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It could work! The flow improver helps to create a similar effect. You have still the problem to not be able to clean/erase/correct but the surface tension can be regulated for sure

    What sort of paper do you use for you pallets? I find the paper that comes with my pallet dries out my paints. Also what level of water in your pallet do you use?

    • @MarcoFrisoniNJM
      @MarcoFrisoniNJM  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I use the RedGrassGames paper but I really like also standard baking paper 😊. I want a thin layer of water over my sponge so I know it's completely saturated. Ps: I have a whole video about this topic 😉

    Hey Marco, do you use flow aid improvers?

    • @MarcoFrisoniNJM
      @MarcoFrisoniNJM  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi! I don't use it with the brush, I prefer a proper retarder if I'm doing something like a wet blending. But I use flow improver in the airbrush for difficult paints like metallics (ps: I have a video about this topic 😉)

    What colours would you use to make an oilwash that has the same tone as reikland fleshshade? Love all of your work and videos!

      😁 I can imagine your plan 😉 Any kind of warm brown can do the job! I like burnt umber but probably raw umber is closer to Reickland

    Can premade oil washes using mineral spirits be stored in empty Vallejo paint dropper bottles, or will the chemical leech/melt the plastic? I noticed you store your spirits in a plastic bottle and was wondering what precautions you take if any.

    • @MarcoFrisoniNJM
      @MarcoFrisoniNJM  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I bought a set of solvent resistant plastic dropper bottles for my white spirit! Not sure specifically about Vallejo bottles, but they are easy to find and you can totally store premade oil washes; I usually use glass jars with good airtight lids for that (I use the premade mostly for terrains, so bigger volumes!)

    Hi Marco, do you thin down your liquitex ink or just spray ‘as is’ out of the bottle?
