R2 Single-Pin Transceiver vs R2Pro Transmitter

  • A workaround for the white balance issue when using the R2Pro/Xpro triggers is the R2SP single-pin transceiver, but can it withstand the paces of pro work? This trigger was recommended by Flashpoint to deal with the AWB issue I identified a few videos ago, and it does come in at a lower cost. While it may fit some needs, I put it to the test as compared to the R2Pro to see if it was viable for interior real estate photography. First I recap the issue that we're trying to solve with a smart trigger and white balance, and then delve deep into how the R2SP and R2Pro match up, and then touch on the various other options to deal with this issue. For more on this and other techniques see my real estate photography series at amzn.to/3mFoznx

    After watching your prior video on this subject, Nathan, I tried my R2 Pro for Fuji trigger on my Sony. What a difference! The warm color cast I was getting with the Sony-specific R2 Pro was driving me batty. With the R2 Pro Fuji-flavored trigger, whites are white, not light beige. Amazing. A HUGE thank you for raising the issue and providing a simple solution.

    I shoot with Sony a7iii and the flashpoint gear that Nathan mentions. I have tried to find a single pin hotshoe to use between the camera hotshoe and the R2 transmitter, and failed. I recalled Nathan talking about using tape to cover the pins that allowed the communication between the transmitter and flash, that he didn't think that was a practical solution. I then realized he was talking about his Nikon gear. I looked at my Sony version R2 pro transmitter and saw that there are small wires at the edge of the transmitter and also in the camera hotshoe. I used non sticky blue painter's tape to cover those wires and it worked. No sticky residue, an easy and cheap fix. I took pictures using the transmitter both without and with the tape covering the wires. It affected the AWB and made it usable. For any Sony shooters this is the cheapest solution. I'm thinking even a piece of paper, cut to just cover the wire connection on the transmitter and create a barrier between the transmitter wires and the camera hotshoe would also probably work.

    Brilliant! Thank you Nathan for such a detailed and objective analysis of your findings. I too have an affinity for the Godox line (and their affiliate brands) as I find that they tend to offer great value. Having taken your test results and taken efforts to replicate your findings, I have to agree 100% that the 'smart' triggers do indeed cause some WB issues. Up to this point, I was always of the impression that the warmer WB was due to my AD 600pro, my shooting/editing technique(s) and/or the lack of proficiency therein. Having now added a single pin adapter it has completely corrected any WB adjustments that I was experiencing with the smart trigger connected directly to the hot shoe of my camera. I really appreciate how you have taken your suspicions and investigated further to determine any issues present. Cheers!

    Thank you Nathan. I thought I was loosing my mind. I recently moved to a canon EOS r and was thinking the color shift was the new camera body. Im very disappoint in flahpoint/Godox response. It really is too bad this is an issue, but I’ve been experimenting with using the R2SP in TRX mode on camera and carrying my R2Pro with me so I can configure the flashes and remotely trigger my camera at the same time. Seems like a cool little setup. Thanks for the video and the efforts to get them to fix this!

    By the way, when I bought my R2Pro II trigger (Canon version), it came with a stand that you attached to the camera's hot shoe and then attach the R2 unit to (I call mine R2D2) that effectively positions the R2Pro in a full vertical orientation, adding several degrees to it's slanted orientation. I haven't tried it yet with the R2S2, but of course that would help enormously with its visibility! The model number is "Flashpoint FPRRVHSC," should anyone be interested.

    I use a R2SP single-pin transceiver on camera and a R2Pro/Xpro trigger in my hand, that way I can change flash settings remotely without touching the trigger on camera.

      I also use the XPro trigger in my hand (hanging on a loop around my neck). I use the XPro to adjust power remotely. I also use it to trigger the shutter on my Canon. Using XPro (channel 1) transmit shutter release to an X1 Receiver (hanging on tripod and connected by sync cord to camera). on the hot shoe, I have an X2 transmitter to the speedlites (godox TT600 and channel 2). I could also use the X2 to manage TT600 power, but I always just use the XPro. I change channels on the XPro to manage power or turn off a light (same as how Nathan shows in this video). I am not clear if the X2 is causing the same white bal problem as discussed by Nathan, with the XPro. The Canon DPP4 exif shows that the flash was fired, (so does LR) but doesn't share info about what was fired (possibly I just dont know where to find it in the DPP4)
      BTW, with this approach the only time I touch the camera is turn on or off the X2 transmitter (ambient vs flash).
      Mrhevia or Nathan - please weigh in on my approach. And Nathan, if you know that the X2 transmitter is causing the same issue as the XPro, would you suggest stacking the X2 on top of the $10 single pin you linked to on amazon.
      thanks much, Steve

      I'm hoping to use this setup too, do you mind me asking what camera you use? I wonder if this would still work with the XPro II trigger. I'm hoping to attach the R2SP to an older Hasselblad H3D, do you think it would matter which XPro or XPro II trigger type I got? Thanks!

    Figured out a work around for WB issues. Use a R2 SP ( in APP mode) on camera and the R2 pro remotely with Sony’s Imaging Edge app. Works great and keeps your hands off the camera.

    I just purchased the XPLOR 600 from Adorama since they were having a BF deal and It comes with the R2SP. before this, I had purchased a Standard TT685 flash combo that came with the X2T trigger for my fuji and absolutely loved that. Unfortunately, I had to return that combo in order to purchase the XPLOR 600 and now Im wondering if the R2SP is going to work well with my Fuji and if Im going to have that cooler white balancing issue with it.

    I would say Godox can provide software update for R2Pro/Xpro triggers and it can be easily fixed on menu level, one more option to activate or deactivate to send any info from trigger to camera. I don't want to spend more money on faulty triggers!

    Hello Nathan. I enjoyed your thorough analysis. I have a technical question about HSS. I tried but did not successfully employ HSS function using the R2 SP, Xplor 600 and Canon 5D2. My camera did not recognize this speed lite and thus I could not engage HSS options. Might you know this can be resolve or where to obtain the information? Thanks.

    Great work again as usual. I've been thinking lately that I may have a WB issue. I have the FP R2pro2 and also the XT. As you suggest, I'd rather not buy a third trigger. I do see an advantage in being able to use my r2pro as a remote trigger I carry around, eliminating the need to touch the trigger on the camera at all using the single pin model. Still, I really don't want a third item. I'll think on it. Can you please post the link to the workaround you mention at the end of this video? Thank you for another great video.

    Hello Nathan, Thank you for all your videos! I love watching them and have employed a lot of your techniques from your books and videos.
    I have recently done the conversion and used a single pin converter on my good and the color cast goes away but now my Nikon Z7 camera has syncing issues past 1/80th shutter, at 100 and up I'm getting the shutter part way or over the whole frame. Any suggestions? I know your a Nikon shooter so thought you may have encountered it, When its set up using all pins the camera sees the flash and shoots unto 1/200 but causes the red color cast, where with single pin the color goes away but then I get sync issues..... Is this a Z7 specific problem maybe? I appreciate any advice you can give on it,

    • @NathanCoolPhoto
      @NathanCoolPhoto  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Cameron, that sounds like a lag in the pass-through of your single-pin converter. Since I don't know what that is...or your entire setup...it's impossible to say for sure if that's the issue.

      @@NathanCoolPhoto Hello Nathan, Thank you for getting back to me and I thought I would follow up to let you know I figured out the problem,
      This may be useful if yourself or others run into the same problem, I was shooting on a Nikon Z7 with Good X1N kit TX and RX with a Yongnuo YN568EX TTL Flash. Tho I don't think its a camera problem, most likely the Trigger or flash,
      I had disabled the TTL pins as you showed on the X1N TX so the Camera did not see the Trigger making it a "dumb" trigger, the color cast was gone and my whites were bang on, But then I was getting curtain de-sync at anything above 1/80th shutter. Thru trial and error and experimenting, I learned I had to disable the TTL pins on the flash as well. It may be the trigger RX or the flash that is causing it but once I disabled the TTL pins on the RX/Flash side of the triggers my sync speed was back and clean upto 1/200 and even 1/250 with some shading at the bottom of the frame. My thoughts are the X1N Rx and Flash must be waiting for some type of signal from the X1N TX causing a delay on the firing of the flash, When TTL pins were on the camera the set all fired perfectly all the way thru the HSS speeds,
      You wouldn't run into this problem with Cactus dumb triggers as the RX would only be single pin, or if you have manual Flashes it would not try to engage the TTL on the X1N RX side.
      Long story but if you ever hear of a De syncing problem in the future you know a possible solution
      Keep up the great videos, I have all your books and keep up on all your videos, I have learned a ton off you and have definitely grown as an architectual photog since following your videos and books,
      Happy holidays

    If I just wanted to use the R2 SP as a receiver for my R2 Mark II will it be able to accept HSS? I can't seem to find the sync speed anywhere for the R2 transceiver. I have the older Godox transceivers that work for HSS if I insert one of them into my R2 Mark II but wanted something that could receive the signal directly. I found the Godox X1R but if these smaller cheaper R2 SP transceivers can do the job I would rather get one of these to jack into my older strobe.

    • @NathanCoolPhoto

      HSS sync requires more than just the center pin from the hotshoe, so in that case you will need to use the multi-pin transmitter.

    • @NathanCoolPhoto
      @NathanCoolPhoto  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Never saw the problem, and without knowing what camera you're using other how you may be using the R2, the only thing I might add is that perhaps your SP adapter is not seating well in the hot-shoe of the camera and/or R2, thus causing intermittent connections, or the SP adapter is bad. They're cheap, so you could always get another one to try.

    Hi, thanks for great video as usual. Is there any dumb trigger that can only fire my flash without affecting the power? I prefer to change power manually on the speedlight I hold in my hand (I use only one light at the time). I can do that easily with my Yongnuo speedlights. I can set YN622N-TX trigger on my camera to TTL and then speedlight in my hand as a manual slave. This way I can change power of my flash without touching the trigger or camera. Recently I have purchased the AD200 PRo and X Pro and there is no manual slave available on AD 200 Pro :(
    Also I've heard somewhere that R2SP has an AAP Mode that apparently doesn't affect power of the remote flash, but I'm not sure if that will work with AD 200 pro.
