    A quick note on AWB vs. manual WB, TTL, and HSS (since I'm getting a lot of questions regarding that): Interior real estate photography is optimized by shooting in AWB (not manual Kelvin) ,TTL is never used, and HSS isn't necessary either. This is necessary for interior real estate photography (more on that in my interiors e-book at www.amazon.com/dp/B0755KXSL4 ), and the workarounds I show here are geared toward interior real estate photography...you can easily revert them when you need to use TTL or HSS for other work. Moreover though, this issue is a bug. As I mentioned in the video, Godox is now aware of this bug and they are working toward fixing it for these triggers (hopefully they will). As others have commented here though, this also occurs with other "smart" triggers like YNs. As I also show in the video, there are simple ways to work around this problem.

    Hi Nathan. Excellent video as usual. I just switched to the Godox V1+ Pro Trigger for my Nikon and wondered what the hell was going on with the WB !? You've answered the question and after testing, Capture NX-D EXIF data shows that the flash isn't recognised if you cover just the top pin contact, the flash detector contact. I did this on the camera hot shoe with some non conductive tape, as a temporary fix. Hopefully Godox will work on a fix in the near future. Thanks again :)

    Whoa Sherlock Cool! Great detective work. I had this issue for a while. It went away once I stacked a Yonguo RF603-II between my D750 and the XPro. Annoyingly, I had to put tape between the Younguo and Godox triggers to make everything work properly and unfortunately that meant I lost the ability to use High Speed Sync, which can be helpful when fighting against bright sunlight, BUT it obviously accidentally fixed this problem. I have to say I didn't really notice that doing this had fixed it, but now I've seen your video, suddenly it's all clicking into place. So, I guess one side point is you say that it's a bug that Godox presents itself as an SB-900 even in manual mode and it shouldn't, but then if it didn't, I think you'd lose HSS ability, so they probably ought to make it a menu option so that people can choose.

    THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU!!! I did a shoot a few days ago on a large, high end house that had a lot of light colored wood and some light earth tone walls. No matter what I did I could tell I was getting far too warm colors in my flash shots. I thought I had been getting my white balance wrong somehow for some time now but this house proved extreme. It really hampered my workflow in post. This explains so much, I'm glad it wasn't just me. Again, thank you for the information and the temporary solutions. I also appreciate you reaching out to the manufacturer to get the issue resolved.

    I just checked this, using a Sony a7III and an old first generation R2 trigger (I didn't have a R2 pro for canon, I wanted everything in my test to be the same, except trigger type) and an eVOLV 200 (all my gear purchased at Adorama). I've been having horrible problems getting colors correct, both in real estate and in portraits. I took a picture in my room using the Sony R2 trigger and then a Canon R2 trigger. The results were exactly as Nathan showed. My Sony R2 showed an orange tint to the room wall color, which is tan like Nathan's room. The Canon R2 trigger showed the wall in the proper tan color. THIS IS SO MADDENING that Godox/Adorama did not catch this problem. I have been in despair over how much trouble I have had in getting colors right, and now I find the problem was in the gear I trusted. ADORAMA--light a fire under Godox and get this problem fixed, now.
    For Sony users, another solution is to pick up a R2 trigger for Canon to fix this until Godox releases firmware to fix the Sony triggers. I only have the first gen Canon R2 trigger, so don't know if the PRO and PROII Canon triggers will also work.

    Hey Nathan, watched the video a couple times and came to my own conclusion. I figured that my trigger was the cheapest component. I took a dremel to my R2-Tii and shaved all but the center pin to nothing. The results are fantastic. I would say to others if you have a steady hand and are using the appropriate safety equipment this is a great option.

    Superb bit of sleuthery, Nathan! Thank you. I have X-Pro triggers for both Sony and Fuji so it's clear which solution appeals to me. I'll do some testing tomorrow. One other thing: Congratulations for actually being able to engage Godox with this issue. In my considerable experience, Godox customer service NEVER responds to inquiries. Nathan this was a good thing you did in helping clarify this issue with ‘smart’ triggers. After you recorded the 1st video to identify this problem, I bought a set of Cactus triggers and will be testing your ‘stacked trigger’ method and see whether this changes things for me. It is my hope that the manufacturer will acknowledge and fix the problem for all of us who own ‘smart’ triggers. Seems like someone missed a step in the programming phase during production. Or they don’t fully understand the nuances of white balance. Superb detective work on your part.

  • @DavidHarrisGRI

    Same issue for me with a Canon 6d Mark II and the R2 transmitter except the colors come out so bad that white balance correction alone wouldn't fix it, I would always have to de-saturate yellow and orange too. Also, TTL is not the only reason for the feedback from transmitter to camera, it can be used during tethered shooting to control the lights and camera through one interface, but that possibility is ruined too. I use reflector tape from Harbor Freight to cover the extra pins on the camera hotshoe since it is thick and the surface is slick enough for the transmitter pins to slide on and off without grabbing the tape. Love my Flashpoint lights but they need to fix this problem.

    Great info. I noticed the white balance issue with the Xpro awhile back and just learned to live with it. I did try a couple of these work-arounds after watching the video. Tried taping over one of the pins on the Nikon. Also got a Canon Xpro trigger. Both worked as far as fixing the white balance issue. However, HSS will not work with either of these solutions. I guess because all the correct info isn't being sent between camera and flash. I use HSS quite a bit, so these solutions are not going to work for me. Hoping for a fix from Godox.

    • @NathanCoolPhoto
      @NathanCoolPhoto  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I never use HSS for REP...no need for it. For other work, like portraits that may benefit from HSS, then I set my Kelvin manually, which can use the native trigger as before. This issue is only for AWB, which for me is only REP...everything else I do with flash uses manual Kelvin.

    The R2 pro trigger has multiple little pins at the front and a central pin (for Sony camera). Can I just break off all of the other pins? lol
    Update:
    I ended up breaking the pins on the trigger. and it works better now!

    Here's a thought. This has been confirmed to be a problem with the X1 trigger also. What if I use the X1t in APP mode (C.fn 9 = ON). That puts the device in essentially single pin mode. Would that overcome the problem? I use my OCF in manual mode 90% of the time anyway. In RE photography, it is easier to adjust flash output at the strobe end, rather than at the camera menu.

      AWB is necessary for interior REP as setting a manual Kelvin would cause further problems, not just technically, but also profitably. Since interiors have myriad color temperatures, flash becomes a "dominant" source, but not a "sole" source of light, thus complicating a true WB from room-to-room and, even from shot-to-shot within a room, and in some cases also the frames within a shot. This makes interior REP quite different from almost any other genre; in fact, exterior REP uses manual Kelvin, but interior REP can't (if you want to make a profit). You could certainly set your WB manually, and then try to adjust between each shot (and frame taken, since multiple images will be composited), and you could also use a gray card for each shot. But since time is of the essence while onsite, all of that would take too long, so AWB is the preferred method for interior REP. I explain this in much more detail in my lighting guide, so if you'd like a more in-depth explanation, see www.amazon.com/dp/B07Z9KKGCS

    Nathan - great video. thanks. Here is my setup, which is almost entirely based on things I learned from you. Canon system. XPro C on my belt. X1 Receiver as a shutter trigger hanging from my tripod (I already had the Feisol CT3442 - great tripod) hard wired to my Canon. X2 Canon sitting on my camera hot shoe. I can control all of the TT600s (as far as power) in various groups on a channel, from either my belt (XPro) or from the camera (X2). As you know, I use a different channel to trigger the shutter, and then the X2, if powered on, causes the Good TT600s to fire. My question is that since the XPro is not firing the flashes, but rather causing the X1 to trigger the shutter, would I have the same issue with the X2 sitting on the hot shoe? Did you also test an X2 for the same firmware issue as you are describing with the XPro? thanks again for your efforts!

    This explains why my camera only sees the trigger as a TTL flash and not manual. Doesn't matter if the trigger itself is in manual mode. Camera tries to fire the first test flash(which doesn't) and then the actual shot/flash, creating a delay. Fujifilm here btw.

    • @NathanCoolPhoto
      @NathanCoolPhoto  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So if I understand this correctly: You have an R2Pro stacked on a single-pin adapter that is stacked in your camera's hot-shoe, and the R2Pro is transmitting to Godox/Flashpoint lights. If you remove the single-pin adapter then the flashes fire, but flashes will not fire with the single-pin adapter in the hot-shoe with the R2Pro on it. If so, then the problem would be one of two things: (1) If you are using Live View mode, then you need to disable Silent LV Shooting...just use the viewfinder, not live view, to ensure that's not the problem. (2) If you are using just the viewfinder and the single-pin adapter is still not allowing communication to the R2Pro stacked in it, then try placing a speedlight in the single-pin adapter to test the connection. It could be that you have a single-pin adapter that is not making contact with your camera's hot-shoe.

      This only affects auto white balance (AWB), so it really only affects interior real estate photography (REP). For all other work I do (including exteriors, products, and portraits) I use and recommend manual WB settings (i.e. 5,500K), which this will have no effect on. Interior REP though relies heavily on AWB, so this is where this has the negative effect.

      Hi Pirjo, I'm using the exact same setup (Canon trigger on Nikon camera), and not seeing the issue you're describing. Since there is no flash intelligence being sent to the flash from the trigger, I doubt the trigger is at fault. I'd suggest running a series of consistent tests with numerous flash shots using each trigger with the same flash unit under the same conditions to see if you can replicate the issue consistently.

      Sadly, Flashpoint refuses to budge and Godox has gone silent. Since their older triggers had a single-pin mode just for this purpose, I don't buy the "feature" argument. If anyone would like to contact Godox, you can email them at servicesupport@godox.com I know Adorama had a flood of calls from Flashpoint users, and Adorama is more than aware of my video, but sticking to their guns that it's a feature, not a bug. Adorama can't fix it anyways, since they just slap a Flashpoint label on Godox stuff; gotta go to Godox to get this done. Nathan, after testing again, although correcting the white balance, now my Xpro trigger acts erratic when I use it above the $8.99 dumb trigger. The manual power of the remote triggers varies w/o changing it in the Xpro master.

    • @NathanCoolPhoto
      @NathanCoolPhoto  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Luis, if your power is varying on your flash, and you can verify that the power setting has changed on the flash's display, then a dumb trigger or adapter is not causing that issue. Instead, it could be that you may have the group in the hot-shoe trigger set to TTL, not M, or it could be from turning your trigger off and on again between shots, or also from pressing the test button on either trigger or light to do testing. Also, since you can change power manually on the light in the single-user mode, you may be encountering a workflow issue where you set the power via the transmitter, then change it on the light, or you turn the light off and on and it will have the same power as what was set the last time, not what the transmitter is set to. I talk about this a bit more in this other video: th-cam.com/video/dWE0bXFFNpo/w-d-xo.html

      You're very welcome, Kristian. You do need to do a one-for-one test with two shots, then check the image EXIF like I show in this video, with pins making contact for one shot and with only center-pin making contact for the other (you can temporarily cover pins with some paper), and also compare the two images side-by-side. Nikon Z cameras tend to favor red no matter what and Lightroom does it more so, so that is not the deciding factor for this issue: you need to check the EXIF and compare WB values using Nikon Studio (OEM software) to see the true comparison.

      No. This affects the auto white balance (AWB) calculation. For everything else but interior RE photography I suggest using Kelvin, but for interior RE photography AWB is crucial since we need, very quickly, a way to get "close" to the mix of various color balances throughout an interior space.

    Is this only a Nikon issue? On my Canon 90D, the EXIF reports the XPro-C trigger (less than a year old, firmware v1.8) as "Individual Group Control" and I don't see any warming of the images when using it. Since the SB-900 is a Nikon speedlight, I wonder if this issue is isolated to Nikon versions and/or Nikon cameras? I am curious if other Canon users have tested this as well.

    • @NathanCoolPhoto
      @NathanCoolPhoto  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This happens to them all, Nikon, Sony, Canon, etc. You can see this by looking at the EXIF as I show in the video, and also be testing a single, repeatable flash shot with the trigger, and with the center pin on the trigger isolated, like I also show in the video.

    • @jlafoon

      @@NathanCoolPhoto Sure enough. The difference is subtle, but it IS there when I reproduced the test like you did with everything on a tripod and stand, and taping over the data contacts on the trigger. I also updated my XproC firmware to the latest (2.0) and the problem is still present.
      The EXIF doesn't show a Canon speedlight model like the Nikon version does, just "Flash Type: Individual group control" which actually sounds accurate, but it is still warming the white balance. And Canon's DPP4 isn't nearly as good as the Nikon software, it doesn't show the WB temperature as a number anywhere I can find, but when I flipped back and forth between the two images, it was definitely apparent.
      It is a shame they haven't fixed this, it has been years, and like I said, mine is brand new.
