I am a Zildjian man, but I HAVE to say those Paiste Signature Dark Energy 15” sound amazing!
I also play Zildjian, and the 15-inch Sweet were nice, but that Paiste Dark Energy based on this comparison was the best sounding.

Lots of oddball cymbals out there but all you need is a good set of Zildjian A’s. You can do anything with them. Perfect pitch, perfect feel, and incredibly versatile.

I completely agree with you. The New Beats took home the prize; the K’s were also excellent, and I liked the Paiste hi hats (I’m a Paiste player but I use Signature and 2002) and the Istanbuls. The others I would not use.

The Paiste 602s are my favourites here. I own a pair of 15" Zildjian K Light hats and they sound VERY similar to the 602s. A nice amount of definition but without too much obnoxious hi-end.
Paiste Signature Dark Energy all day long.
For me and the music in my head the Istanbuls sound best. But the Meinl extra dry have something that sticks out in a mix in an interesting way.
Sabian HHX Complex Medium and the Instanbul Agop Mantra were my personal favorites. But with that being said, there was not one bad sounding cymbal on here. All of them sound amazing in their own way.

They all sound great. I own a pair of New Beats, tried a bunch of hats a few months ago, without looking at labels, and fell in love with the New Beats. In person, they have a very pleasant kind of depth, it’s hard to explain but it makes them awesome in a mix.

Hands down, no competition, best ever, are the Formula 602 ME. I have the 15" and they are perfect. The Zildjian New Beats are amazing. Great video.
I play the paiste Modern essential 602s in 15. Also Istanbul agop 30th anniversary.in 14. Love them both!

Great comparison! My main set of hats is a pair of 70's 15" New Beats. My favorite three in this video are the K Sweets, the Istanbul 30th, and the 15" New Beats. To me New Beats are just what hi hats are supposed to sound like.
Just keep in mind, particularly with Zildjian-You can really customize your sound. Every pair or I should say, cymbal, sounds differently! With that being said, I’m fortunate to own, both, 14” Zildjian New Beats and 15” Zildjian K Sweet hats! I tried a few pairs out before I chose. Out of three pairs of New Beats I tried at a local music store, I chose a top from one pair and a bottom from another pair. The salesman said it was fine! Let me tell you-To my ears, they sounded perfect! You have to look, try and play different pairs, especially with Zildjian. With the K Sweet 15’s, I got very lucky! I found a pair that worked. I played them with a couple of bands, recording them and playing live and they’re great! The New Beats I picked sound very smooth, for many styles and the K Sweets are great for dynamic playing, higher volume playing and also, many other applications. These hi-hats you have here are all nice. But you have to look, try, play and hear them for yourselves. You can go and play them at a local store near you and many of these will all sound different! It’s worth the effort, though. It was for me!

Funny, but both my son and I listened to the demo and we both had the same 2 favorites but we chose a different number 1. I preferred the Zildjian New Beats and he preferred the Paiste Dark Energy. Both are amazing. Thank you for the demo
They all sound great. The Meinl Byzance sound pretty funky. Nice and wet. Paiste 602's are great sounding. Zildjian New Beats are excellent. Both Agops. I play 14 inch A Zildjian Quick-Beats.. after having played 14" New Beats for years.
The Pure Alloys sound amazing. Clean, not too heavy, sound good opened or closed.
All sound great in their own way, no matter how subtly different. Not a Meinl player currently, but, for me, the Extra Dry had the most personality, but the Pure Alloy were very clean and versatile. Great video.
All of them are good. The K-Sweets and Paiste Dark Energy are special. I have the 14" New Beats. Love them. Saw Kenny Aranoff mentioning the session drummers were going 15" . Lots of choices here. All are winners . Thanks to Tom for the great demo

I only have experience with Zildjian and Sabian but I really liked the Paiste 602's out of all of those and with m luck, they just happened to be very expensive. By the way guys, I love how when you're demoing the cymbals how you play the same beat. It makes it much easier to focus on the sound of the cymbals.

Like all of them, love most of them, but in the end, Zildjian A New Beats remain THE hi-hat sound for me. (Even if it's not the set I would choose if someone offered me one of these for free--that'd probably be the Meinl Byzance Extra Dry or the Sabian HHX Complex.)
That's so interesting. They were by far my least favorite set. quickly followed by the meinl alloys. I just can't stand bright hats. Weirdly enough, I loved the AAX. My favorites though were the extra drys and both istanbuls
@@guywithabeard I mean, that makes sense, right? I love bright hats. I'm intrigued by dark and dry hats but I still love the sound of the hats I grew up on, both with recordings and what I played, so New Beats are just what hats are "supposed to" sound like to me.
I've owned a pair of 14s for a few years comprising of a new beat top over a k light bottom. The thinner, darker k just takes some of the harshness out of the sound, perfectly moderating the top. I cant speak more highly of them. They sound even better in the 15" version, but I cant justify the expense when the ones I have work so well. We all have a different idea of how things should sound, but you might want to give it a try?
see what i look for in hi hats is something that’s very versatile and has stick definition. Zildjian A New Beats win that for me. I play rock, metal, punk, core, everything heavy and i need versatility for those. also, the open hi hat sound on them is incredible, a nice sloshy sound and not too crashy. my biggest issue with a lot of hi hat is it’s crashy open hi hat.
Meinl X.Dry is a very slow jazz sound IMO
Iv had the 15” paiste de’s for a year now and they are just awesome, there’s nothing they won’t do well. Silly money but they’ll save you in the long run by ending your search for the ultimate hats.
Up here in Canada, the Paiste Dark Energy 15" are very hard to find these days.....after a recommendation by Rob "Beatdown" Brown I decided to take a chance and get a pair....sight unseen....a Long&McQuade rep managed to find a pair for me a few weeks ago so I bought them....they were pricey but I love 'em....worth every penny. This video confirms that without a doubt, I made the right choice......BTW...great comparison video!

My faves are the Paiste Signature Dark Energy or Sabian HHX Complex Medium hats.
Try The Sabian HH Vanguards . They're a mix of the best of both hats.

The new HHX Complex sounded great, right now I have two 17" crashes for hats. Artisan (Brilliant) on top and Crescent (Natural) on the bottom. Let's keep these going into 16 and 17 combinations! Great stuff as always!
At the rehearsal for a brass band I'm in, the other drummer brought his K sweet hihats and they sound INSANE! At least In person anyway, they sound really thick and beefy and seem pretty versatile too (but probably best for rock)

Loved the Signature Dark energy. I would have loved to be able to compare it to the Signature Dark Crisp which is a big favorite. I’m also a big fan of Zildjian’s hats. New beats are great. The K sweet sounded really good. I was hoping to hear some UFIP hats... great content
The New Beats have a great all around sound that could be used for any genre.

I have the 15 ibch sabian complex medium. Fantastic. These upper upper priced hats really feel different. Great response and you can really dig in while keeping its warm sound.
Those Mantras are outstanding! Just to be followed by the 30-Anniversary. Sweets are spot on, but little sterile. All the others… well, fine but those Istanbuls are unreached.
I love the Paiste Hats in this Video. Great choice for the demo. I own the 15" 602 Modern Essentials and the Dark Energy Hats in 14". Amazing how versatile they are.
The Paiste DEs stuck out as the "winner" but all are terrific sounding. Hard choice to make, it's like picking your favorite child.
Paiste dark energy #1 but I will say for $200. Less the A zildjian hats are more in my reach.I owned a pair in the 80s, sure wish I still had them.

Meinl Pure Alloy and the Paiste Modern Essentials are my preferred choice. New Beats are ok too.

I am hoping against hope that Zildjian will offer those soon. I have been having the hardest time finding 15" Zildjians that I like. This one's too clunky, that one's too thin. I need the happy medium.
Paiste dark and Istanbul mantra are probably my favourites. Honestly they all sound good in their own ways tho
These all sound great. It depends on what you're looking for in a set of hats. I actually really like the K Sweet for the brightness on the open hat. A little more complex overtones than the New Beats, which are a staple set of hats for many people.

I'm using A Mastersound 14" hats at the moment. Best hats I've ever owned.

The A's have a crisp sound and cut through the mix very well. I'm a heavy hitter and find i don't have to hit the hats hard to get a great sound out of them .
I recently got some 14" AAX Xcelerator hats and they are very similar in sound.
Both hats are great. I sometimes swap out the bottom hat and use an AA Regular bottom hat. Closest sound to New Beats i can get without actually buying them.

I have the 14" Paiste Dark Energy. Love them. They're just a tiny bit brighter than the 15's and a bit faster and less sloshy - can still get a bit dirty if I want, however.

Great demo. I liked the Meinl's, the Paiste Dark Energy and both of the Zildjian's the best. If I had to pick one pair -- Paiste Dark Energy.
Thanks for this! I love 15” hats...period. But nothing too thin - I prefer hats with some sizzle, or they just sound “cheap” to me. I made the switch to 15’s over 10 years ago and haven’t looked back. I started with 15” Zildjian A New Beats and love them because they are so versatile! I had Paiste 2002 15” Sound Edge for a bit. Loved the sound but just too bright and loud for what I play. Now I’m loving the 15” Zildjian K Sweet hats I got a couple months ago. Unfortunately most of the other models you demo’d are harder to find in Canada. I could be happy with most of these in the video, particularly the Paiste and Istanbul if not my Zildjians.
Got me a pair of New Beats in this size and never looked back.

Get a piece of paper, and write out a number but not the name of the cymbal and write your opinions. Then, find out which is which later.
Zombieroo that’s seriously the only way. I see a brand and there’s nothing I can do about preconceived notions. Good idea.
They all sound great. My 15" hats are the Zildjian A Avedis. I also have the
14" K/Z
14" A Mastersounds and sometimes use the K top over the A Mastersound bottom and A top over the Z bottom
How you like 14" A mastersound?
I think these are a great all around GP set of hats and its all about that bottom cymbal and thats why i picked them over the new beats
I love my Meinl Byzance Extra Dry hats and have played Zildjian New Beats forever. Nobody does it better than DCP!

The Paiste Dark Energy crispness really jumps out when the stick on top of the hats, doing that articulate stuff.... Some of the others sound dead with stick work on the top. And the Dark Energy wash is pretty great too.
My favorite was the Paiste dark energy hats. I want them now for my collection. Beautiful sound with a great chick and lots of character.
The HHX Complex with the Sweet Hats as a close 2nd
Dank Energys are my favorite, but those Sabian HHX's are total class. Also, Hot Tommy Roth is best drummer.
Zildjian New Beats. My favorite high hat cymbals are Zildjian Quick Beats in 15". Bottom cymbal is substantially heavier than the top but has no bell and instead four small holes around where the bell would have been. Amazing cutting "chick" sound. I don't think that they are manufactured any longer. I purchased them in 1980 and used them constantly since then. If something happened to them I would in all likelihood use New Beats.

I have both for that very reason! The HHX 15" Legacies (Weckls) are awesome too! Legacies are a bit brighter and buttery, K Sweets middle timbre/brightness, and HHX complex are the darkest. They're the only 3 pairs of 15s I have or need for any context, and they're each phenomenal! I also have the 14.25" K custom hybrids, and those are a very musical hat, with multiple tones in one plate, and an unbelievable sizzle and chick. Out of all of them, I think the K Sweets are the most versatile, the Legacies are great for groove and live playing, and the HHX complex mediums have their own dark and amazing character. The K Sweets and hhx complex are very similar. But, the hhx are definitely darker. I just grabbed some K Mastersounds too...Oh, my, gosh!!! Those K Mastersounds sound SILLY good! But, I gave away my pair of K Sweets to my best student (because I had/have so many pairs. I collect, but also flip and sell plates), after he hit the 5 year mark and made first chair in jazz band. I figured I'd be just fine with my Legacies and Complex, but there's something about the how versatile the Sweets are and their timbre, that I just got another pair. lol. But, I play a lot of contexts from 2k seating capacity front houses, to small dive bars, to fusion, to jazz, to funk, to rock, to recording sessions; so I tried to make sure I had all my bases covered for any context. But, out of ALL of them for me: 1) Mastersounds or Hybrids, 2) K Sweets, 3) HHX complex and Legacies tied. Then of course you've got your New Beats, and Paiste Dark Crisps, etc. But, for darker hats, you can't find better than those! Maybe throw Dream Bliss in there too. But, boy do I love my K Sweets and HHX complexes!

Great video. As an engineer (primarily live), dark cymbals are the way to go. Cymbals with a lot of high end bleeding into vocal mics = disaster. I liked the dark energy, but they seem too loud (again, limit the bleed). I liked the Agop 30th Anniversary. The Byzance line is killer.

I'm partial to the Paiste Dark Energy and the 602 Modern Essentials; I am currently playing a pair of Paiste 15" Giant Beat Sound Edge prototypes I purchased from you guys at DCP, and I absolutely love them!
I own the Paiste DE, but they all sound great, except for maybe the Meinl Extra Dry (not a bad sound in itself, but not so versatile) .
