    *Jazz Blues Chord Solo*
    This weeks lesson is a short etude, a chord solo on an F blues. You should be able to use it as inspiration and resource to make your own chord solos but if it was played less dense it will also work well for comping.

    You can of course download the pdf of the exercises and examples here:

    Hello Jens! Nice lesson! Today I think I realised something : I am already thinking about top note melody when I try to play chord melodies , which for sure has the benefit of making the chords sound more connected. However, I realised that it sounds more like comping instead of a chord melody. I think that what I see you doing, that is missing from what I do, is that you keep giving it much more movement . I was playing 1 or 2 chords in each bar.

    There may be a typo. Example 1: blues solo. Bar number 3. Where you write 9996, should it not be 9998?

    hey jens I'm having some trouble understanding why we harmonize the Bb scale over the F7. Im sure I can grasp the theory eventually, however, the reasoning as to why we do it eludes me. SOS :p

    • @JensLarsen
      @JensLarsen  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Nathaniel Borochof We need a scale that contains an F7 chord, it's really quite simple

    • @sirpineapplekush
      @sirpineapplekush 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Therefore we could use Fmixolidyan?

    • @JensLarsen
      @JensLarsen  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nathaniel Borochof F mixolydian is Bb major

  • @moonn4108
    @moonn4108 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    what did you mean by "harmonizing Bb major with an F7 chord " i understand what's harmonizing a scale , but what does it mean to harmonize it with an F7 chord ?

    • @JensLarsen
      @JensLarsen  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Moncef Fadal What that means is to take the whole scale and try to find an F7 chord that you can put under each of them, so you have an F7 with a C, D, Eb etc as highest note. That way you can play any melody over an F7 and use these chords to make it a chord solo.
      Does that help?

    Would just using drop 2 voicings the entire time, including passing chords like diminished on the bottom four as well, be alright?

    • @JensLarsen
      @JensLarsen  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Allright in what way?

    • @545parsa
      @545parsa 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That it would still work, like if I have the notes G, B, Bb, then A on the High E as the melody and play drop 2 voiced chords that contain those notes as the highest note in that chord.

    • @JensLarsen
      @JensLarsen  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That doesn't make sense to me witout more context.
      But in any case you can use drop2 all the time if you think it sounds good. It's not going to fit in all styles of jazz because it is a bebop/hardbop type sound. A lot of guitarists later than that didn't use it that much,

    Hi. My apologies, my English is a bit poor.
    I have a doubt.
    When you say "harmonizing Bb major with an F7 chord"
    what does it mean?
    I do not see where the Bb major comes from. What does that Bb major means in the exercise?
    Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

    • @JensLarsen
      @JensLarsen  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No worries!
      What is the dominant( or V chord) in Bb major?

    • @greenaturuxo3941
      @greenaturuxo3941 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      ok, it´s F7.

    • @greenaturuxo3941
      @greenaturuxo3941 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Then, to finish understanding, for example, could we harmonize a C major with a F7 chord?
      Does this make any sense?

    • @greenaturuxo3941
      @greenaturuxo3941 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess not, but...

    • @greenaturuxo3941
      @greenaturuxo3941 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I mean, why do we have to say "harmonizing a Bb maj"? We are only moving the F7 for its different drops and some notes of the F mixolidian scale, no?
      It may be because if it was a min7 chord this could be doric or eolic, then we say "F major harmonized with Gm7" to indicate that it is Doric?
