This was super helpful, used it to pull a 9" stump this afternoon. I didn't use a bolt through the 4x4, I cut a notch with the Sawzall and just laid the chain across the top of the 4x4. Also, when I had put as much pressure on the stump as I could, I put a 4 ton bottle jack up against the far side of the stump and was able to press it a few inches. This broke it free.
Ignore all the infantile bragging from the overgrown kids saying stuff like "That's not big enough to call a stump" or" I would just use some huge machine costing $ 100, 000" If you are a back yarder with a load of stumps this size and no tractor od digger, this seems like a cost effective and efficient way to get the job done .

This is basically the very best way to pull stumps and how I also do it. But take care, when you don't have struts at your beams to the side, it may collaps.
Now I'm no professor but wouldn't it make more sense to swap the come along with the tag end of strap attached to the tree so that the come along was lower to the ground and easier to reach. And realistically what you are actually doing is weeding in the woods.. Instead of starting the 4X4 at 90 degrees why not start with it leaning slightly over the twigs your pulling out. This will increase the distance of travel of that come along before you need to reset it.
Actually the bolts taking all the load, if it sheared, that would be a terrible place to be standing. The come along should of been more near the tree, or the post half as tall so you weren't cranking right under the weak point.

I added a 2 foot 4x4 to the bottom, between the stump and the vertical post. This keeps the stump coming straight up much longer with less work.
Rick, Think of it as L shaped, as the main post pulls the the stump and starts to lean the lower part of the L will keep the stump coming up rather than sideways. Same as using a car rim. Also google a tool called a "Weed Wrench" for a better idea of what I'm talking about. The "Weed Wrench" is expensive, but easy to copy. I made 2 sizes of them as I have lots of Buck Thorn and other small (2 inch and under) brush to pull.
There must be a huge amount of tension right at the point, where you're standing beneath that ratchet. I was wincing watching this, waiting for it to turn into a bright idea gone wrong, and witnessing a cable snap or 2x4 slip and something terrible happening to you, like being slashed by a cable or head being smashed by the 2x4. Maybe you can invent something to keep your body far away from that ratchet. It seems like using a chainsaw to carve that little stump and roots out of the ground would be much safer.
I'd put the come a long about 4 feet high on the tree and not work that hard reaching over your head.. But I'm old and don't waist energy. LOL Lots of folks can use this trick though. Nice job.
Those are very small "stumps". They can usually be quickly removed with a well placed blow from an axe.....but I suppose if you're wanting to remove the roots, your method works well......even if it is time consuming.

+Mike Dunn When you pull a stump horizontally you're pulling all the dirt between the stump and the fixed point along with it. If you haven't yet found and cut all of the roots with larger stumps, it's super difficult to tell with a horizontal pull. With a more vertical pull once the stump starts to budge you can usually tell pretty quickly if there are additional roots you need to cut.
@@mikedunn7795 The root system of a tree is designed to withstand horizontal winds. Just find a small sprout that you can pull up with your hands and you'll see that it takes a lot less effort to pull straight up than to try to pull to the side.

When I was in my 30's I'd push and pull on a small tree like that from all directions until the ground came loose around it, then I'd tie it to another tree as high as my hands could reach and hang my weight on the rope. the trick would be to take up the slack and do it again until the whole thing crashed over with a big clod of dirt and roots

Those aren't stumps, stumps are a minimum of 18 inches in diameter. Those "stumps" are considered brush where I come from, we drop the Bush hog on them.
leverage is great especially on larger trees and shrubs. Your winch will pop those little things out with no 4x4 contraption easily. The weak link on mine is the handle. You will bend the handle when you pull large stumps. Some of my roots are as big as your whole stump
that's an interesting concept but I simply hook the chain to the stump then to the drawbar on my big green John Deere and say giddy up and that old stump comes right out of the ground. simple, clean and easy. now I know every one does not own a John Deere but that ain't my fault. love that John Deere
For crying out loud get two hooks for your chain quick dickin around with duct tape and learn how to make a choker with your chain but very interesting and useful idea two thumbs up from me also that is not a maul that is considered a mad axe very useful tool for d stumping your yard
Looks easy - NOT. Have tried this. The Tree stumps I've been working with are sweet gums and they have a tap root. So far I've split my 4x4, bolted it back together and pulled a 6" diameter sweet gum (liquid amber) stump. The hardest part of this is hooking the chain to the stump to the 4x4 to the come-along to the tree. Not a real easy single handed project. It does work though.
Thats using your Brain instead of your back !! But the big stumps you will have to dig and cut some roots before you can finish pulling them out i am guessing !!!!!

Watched a video of some guy pulling steel round stock with a chain.
No tape required and no slipping.
Matter of how you wrap the chain.
This would be easier if you just use a high-lift jack with stabilizing legs with a chain

By having the 4x4 he's pulling up than out without the 4x4 he'd just be pulling out

Story, wrong in so many ways. Come-along is being used backwards and it should be position near the base of the anchor tree.
Those aren't stumps, I'll show you stumps that a 3/4 ton truck and a 2" chain can't even budge. Those are little sticks.

An adze i believe is for hewing timber as in timber framed buildings. Mattocks are used in forestry mostly and landscaping for churning soil.
