  • Join me (JSB) as I listen to 4 randomly selected tunes from Rush's classic 1984 album Grace Under Pressure for this week's 'random 4-play' (and 40 year flashback!).

    RANDOM 4-PLAY, WHAT'S THAT?
Nothing naughty, honest, it's simply where I put an album on shuffle and listen to/discuss the first 4 tracks to come up and (SPOILER ALERT) in this case those songs were:
    Red Sector A
    Afterimage
    Between the Wheels
    Distant Early Warning
    ABOUT ME AND THE CHANNEL:
Welcome to Acting is Reacting! I'm Joe or JSB (snappier than my full double-barrelled monstrosity of a name!), a New Zealand born and London (UK)
based music-obsessed actor who loves diving into sounds old and new. Join me on a musical journey as I explore and react to a wide range of genres, notably singer/songwriters, classic rock and prog - but much more besides - nothing is off the table! I'll cover artists I've loved since childhood -The Beatles, Billy Joel, Chicago, Gordon Lightfoot, Queen - right up to modern indie rock from Sam Fender, Giant Rooks and The Killers (to name a few), plus stuff from in between - Marillion, Toto, Rush...I could go on all day (and often do!). Whether it’s my first time hearing a song or the thousandth, I aim to share my genuine reactions and insights with you.
But wait, there's more...occasionally, I'll be taking a look at some of the projects I've been involved in as an actor, offering a unique 'self-reaction' to my work in the entertainment industry.

Alex's guitar work on this album is some of his very best. Every time I listen to it I am amazed.

1976-1985 is going to cover their Top 8 albums IMO. But yeah, that 1980-1985 was pretty awesome with Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures, Signals, Grace Under Pressure, Power Windows.

Red Sector A is a very personal song for Geddy Lee. His parents were both in concentration camps in Nazi Germany. Alex's parents were also Polish immigrants from that same era.

GREAT album!! Just missing The Enemy Within and my day would be complete!! LOVE the bassline on that track! I've embraced the 70's and 80's Rush pretty much equally.
    Cheers from Canada, eh!

@@Act0rJSB as I totally understand the 'dislike' for Geddy's voice (at times) during this era...my wife is one - she greatly prefers the 80's output, and much of that is due to Geddy's dropped register. Cheers!

'Grace' was not derided as much as people think. I was still onboard with Rush as a hardcore fan and a musician. Their peak period for me was the late 70s into 81-82. Signals was a terrific album, the synths were full and warm and the songs had subtle atmospheres. I missed Terry's production on Grace, and Rush suffered for that loss, but it was still a banger of an album. I also loved Power Windows, but they were going overboard with all of the clattering layers of sequencers and samples, but they were still shredding their fretboards underneath it all, and the songs were still great. Hold Your Fire was the one that lost me. Didn't get tbe songwriting, the production was a mess, guitar, bass and keys all in tbe top end, drums submerged in ambient tones. BUT.... they were still shredding tbe fretboards!! LOL So I still bought every album and listened through the following weaker period, Presto and Roll tbe Bones. Then Counterpoints woke us all up again and every album since has been great.

Thanks Mark, great summary of those years from someone who actually lived through them! A very different experience from the haphazard way I've gone back and forth through time when working my way through their discography! JSB

Thanks for watching - have been pleased to see that this album is a lot better regarded than I thought (or those who hate it have just stayed away perhaps...?!) JSB.

This is a genius album and it’s interesting in that it’s probably the darkest Rush album in their discography due to the lyrics that Peart penned. While Peart in particular is highly influenced by reggae here which was all the rage at the time, it’s still a master at his craft. There’s not one mediocre song on the album, they’re all great, but being a musician I look at things a bit differently with a very different metric. Nonetheless, it’s all subjective anyway so ultimately it doesn’t really matter what people think; you like what you like.
