  • Episode 5 of overhauling the Volvo penta tamd41 marine engine. In this episode I'll overhaul the water pump. Many of the Volvo Penta engines from this era is very similar, so most of this series will be relevant for owners of other engines including tamd and tmd series, D and AD series from 1988- 1993, AQAD series and KAD series. In this episode I give you some background for the project

    Amazing Volvo Penta videos.
    Still helping people after 8 years.
    You are a legend to have done this. I can’t imagine filming amd working on an engine then sparing the time to edit them also.
    Very selfless of you.
    Thanks.

    Good tutorial! (Not meaning to step on toes).... certainly covers the basics. Don't forget to inspect the shaft for the wear groove that exists when a lip seal is used in direct contact with the shaft as the sealing component. A grooved shaft will leak again ,but even sooner, even with a new lip seal.Also check inside the bearing housing for grooves in the bronze.Excessive wear will greatly reduce your pumping capacity and tear up impellers. The body would be considered not useable if the impeller has worn through the machined surface and into the casting giving the appearance of rough surface.

    Great video, if posible do not hit the bearing with a hammer, if you have to hit it be sure to hit the outerring, the balls inside the bearing will be damaged when hitting the innering.
    What i did was to put the shaft with bearings in the freezer and i also heated the housing with warm water about 60c then the shaft just slipped in without any force:)

    Good work Svend. Have 2x 41a's in my boat, and whilst I am mech savvy, there are many who are not. One point, I would not be hitting any shaft with a hammer - but always use brass drift. Looking forward to more of your work.

      Thank you so much for your comment. I am a "DIY" mechanic, so it`s always good to get inputs from the pros! I se your point about using a regular hammer on the shaft, and recommend my viewers to follow your tip, or maybe using a "plastic" or soft tap hammer?

    I did this pump but with the engine installed and having to reach around the engine from opposite side. A complete pain. The rubber dampener was very hard to align. It took 3 hours to just get the pump back in the engine. These are helpful videos however most of this type of work is done kneeling in a bilge with limited space.

    Does anyone know what the O ring that sits between the two seals do?

    • @utbelegs
      @utbelegs 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's a slinger..in the event of seal failure the slinger gives a "drip path" or slings the water away from the bearing end.

    Hello Svend, how did you got the crankshaft pulley off? I have removed the 6 bolts but it is stuck in old rust. Can I just tap it all around or do I need a pulley removal tool at this point? It should come off at this point, right? You didn't happened to record it on camera? (I have a MD31A four cylinder version without turbo charger)

    • @svendmb
      @svendmb  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I assume you are talking about the main crankshaft pulley in the "bottom" the engine? In that case you need a standard pulley removal tool to pull this off. I have a video of this. Will try to get this out soon. You also need to heat this pulley to get it on again...

    • @JohNSmith-cn3tz
      @JohNSmith-cn3tz 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hej igen Svend,
      yes the main crankshaft pulley.
      I actually want to remove the pulley(själva remskivan endast) only, not the hub. When the 6 bolts are loose, is the pulley then loose or is it something more to it? Volvo manual doesn't show any details here so I am guessing.
      Just came in from the garage, I tapped it bit with a soft hammer but didn't dare to use any force to speak about...
      Hälsningar från Sverige!

    • @JohNSmith-cn3tz
      @JohNSmith-cn3tz 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      At 5:17 into you video above, I can see the 6 bolts but no pulley. The hub is still there I suppose? Hard to see...
