Wow what bad luck that with disadvantage an enemy managed to get a crit. That means the dice rolled 20 both times (a 1 in 400 chance). While I get the caught stealing mechanics are to keep players from nicking everything and absolutely breaking the game's economy it is a bit annoying that getting caught makes everyone in the area go instantly aggro.
I assume there being the bribery option means it's a viable tactic in certain places. I guess these guys are a bit too 'live by the sword, die by the sword' to accept a bribe.
