Tip I got from Linda Germain--if you spray the corrugated paper with water and wait a minute, the top paper layer will come off fairly easily!

I love this, Mark! You are inspiring me to unpack my Gelli again. BTW when I started watching you edit the photo, I thought you were going to make the black, the grey, and the white three different color plates a la Warhol. That would be cool too, though I think the black only with halftone works perfectly with the collage composition. Your art is great, thanks for sharing.

I am so enjoying watching your experiments and techniques. But I think you have missed out on one of my favorites: transferring with graphite. Make a drawing with a soft graphite (9B works really well). Place the drawing directly onto the gel plate (no ink, no paint). The gel plate will pull some of the graphite onto the plate. Add paint/ink and pull the print as normal. Works great. Would work with your excellent drawings.

You are such an innovator in this space of art! Love your videos. I’m just starting out and I’m having the hardest time getting a clean and clear laser print transfer … I’ve read that a color printed b/w laser print works better because of the build up of toner, is there any validity to that? My HP laser jet pro is just not layering the toner even after running the print through 3 sometimes 4 times. Any advice?

  • @johannafritz4255

Can you use new newspapers for the transfer or do they specifically need to be old? I didn’t know if that made a difference when I want to transfer an image to a plate if the ink coverage was different on old newspapers, Thank you.

When you worked with the corrugated cardboard you took the print from the gel plate but couldn't you have used the paint on the actual cardboard as a stamp instead?
That's awesome! I've never seen a gel plate used in this way. So many possibilities! 🙂

Hi Sage, absolutely would work either way. pressing the card in to the plate means you get a smoother texture which ultimatley makes the print a bit easier to pull. not a lot in it though!

How long did you let the bent can image dry on the gel plate before you added the acrylic gel medium? And once you have placed the image and plate on the paper, how long should it stay there before you peel it away?

Hi there. It was a warm day so I only left the can image 2 or 3 minutes to dry. Once gel medium was applied and then aligned onto paper, I left it for about 10 minutes to make sure it was totally dry.

Thank you so much! Out of all the videos I've watched yours is the BEST! In my head, I've made up a story about you. I think you are an art professor in printmaking? Anyhow, I digress. I was watching your techniques with Gelli Plates because I am preparing for a gallery show. I have primarily worked in digital media but wanted to switch things up a bit. I made my own Gelli plate from gelatin & glycerine with supplies I bought off amazon. I never managed to get a good image transfer from my homemade plate & ink jet print. I'm learning that most people use laser prints or photocopy prints, do you know what the science is on this? I could get the image to transfer to the plate but never could get it to pull off. :/. I finally invested in the commercial Gelli Plate :/. It's too late for my show, but I wanted to experience the difference first hand...even if only from a magazine. Keep making videos, it's refreshing to see them as they are well edited & the sound it good. I have an MFA in Art & Technology so I'm a stickler about that stuff. :)

Hi Cynthia, such a heart warming message! Thank you. The sceince (I think!!!!) on laser copy transfer is that the ink is oil based and therefore resists the water based acrylic while it is wet on the plate. Hopefully you can explore the gel plate and incorporate it into future work and shows - best of luck : )
