      Honestly if you know how to sharpen a knife 1095, 440c, or AUS 10 is all you need. Much easier to sharpen than 20CV or M4 too. Believe me I know, I have all kinds of knives with fancy steels, I make my own knives too. Don't fall for the high end steel hype.

      Most of the people who complain about steel don't even use their knives, they just want the print on their knife blade as a status symbol. Because if the blade says CPM XXX it means the blade is better. I've tested cold steels AUS 10 over the last week and its a good steel, nothing wrong with it at all.

    Jim the difference between s35v and AUS 10a is nominal especially in edge retention. Aus10a is definitely a tougher steel. If you put those two knives through a severe beating the 4max scout with grivex scales and aus10 a would come through with flying colors, whereas the 4 max with s35v steel and titanium scales would chip, and break without question. In the long run the 4max scout is definitely the better buy! The last thing, if you used these two knives for field use the aus10a is easier to sharpen!

    Thank you for the video Joshua. It's always good to hear and see you (or see your hands at least). After much internal debate, I decided to buy the Italian version - received it yesterday. (You'd actually recommended it to me before the Scout was presented.) The knife is well designed and no folding knife has a more secure lock. Two things I find odd about the knife are to do with the handle. (1) The handle diameter is skinny in diameter making it built for medium size hands yet the knife is a colossus. (2) The knife handle is way long, 6.0", yet the blade sticks out only 4.0". Still, the knife is fun to fidget with. It always spooks me a bit when I deploy that blade and hear that monstrous click when it locks open - I fear one of my fingers might get caught some place yet that won't happen. The knife is designed to be so safe as it can be. Look forward to seeing you again JS!

    • @Jimislash
      @Jimislash  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The long handle gives you different options to choose from for grip. Great for chopping. :) Once you get used to the lock, it's super easy to take use. Thank you for the kind words.

    This checks so many boxes IMO and there is nothing wrong with AUS10A steel. Cold Steel has their process dialed in for all steels used so you can be assured it is made to spec. FYI: "The AUS stainless steel series is produced by Aichi Steel Corporation of Japan. They differ from the AISI 4xx series because they have vanadium added to them. Vanadium improves the wear resistance, toughness, and ease of sharpening.[11] In the alloy name the appended 'A' indicates the alloy has been annealed.
    AUS-6 (6A) is comparable to 440A with a carbon content close to 0.65%.[11] It is a low cost steel, slightly higher wear resistance compared to 420J.
    AUS-8 (8A) is comparable to 440B with a carbon content close to 0.75%.[11] AUS-8 is often used instead of 440C.[11] SOG knives uses AUS-8 extensively.
    AUS-10 (10A) is comparable to 440C with a carbon content close to 1.10%.[11] It is slightly tougher than 440C."

    • @Jimislash
      @Jimislash  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cold Steel is heat treating this right, if it's only a bit tougher than 440C. It's a beast.

    • @majergens
      @majergens 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Jimislash : I have had very good luck with 440C in knives by Ganzo (and others) so this will do quite nicely. The chronic naysayers will still complain but I think Cold Steel has a hit with the 4-MAX Scout!

    I'm some what torn on whether I want to buy one. I have enough big tough over-built knives already. I don't have need for another one, yet I want it none the less. I seldom have need for this type knife, yet the allure draws me in every time. I can't really afford a 4Max, but this one I can..Cold Steel kills me..I love them, regardless of my need, or lack of, lol. AUS10 doesn't bother me at all..it's a decent performer. At this price point, for a large heavy use intended beast of a knife, you won't do much better. If you improve the steel, you raise the cost. This is a decent steel at a decent price. There are far worse steels they could have chosen to use. More than likely, I'll end up with one in my collection, and it will probably sit and collect dust with only an occasional carry, like the rest of my big over built hard use knives do, lol.

      Timbo437....As a longtime collector, user, seller, trader, buy'em again guy, I started getting rid of knives I wouldn't use or carry. So after 25 years, I sold off a lifetime collection which included 2 Sebenza 21s, Daltons, 9 Medfords, andseveral Striders that I had bought used because I refuse to support posers. Then went all of the "collectible" Spydies and a lifetime Benchmade collection because of their political leanings. So, what was left that I love and am not afraid to carry and use without worry....I still have all of my Cold Steel blades including old ones like the Triple Action and I ordered one of these Friday after watching this great video. Cold Steel is a company that puts out great, unapologetic blades that are affordable for the average Joe and are a better and stronger knife than some costing hundreds $ more! Cold Steel, the company with balls!

    • @timbo4374
      @timbo4374 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@sturmgewehr70 I agree about CS. I only have 5 of their folders, and 6 of their fixed blades, but every one is an awesome knife. I know there are a lot of haters because of their marketing, and a lot of Lynn Thompson haters, but regardless of what anyone thinks about all that, the product they put out is solid as hell. From their budget line to their top tier, their knives perform as a knife should, and they hold up to hard use. Even their lower grade budget steels like AUS8 and 1.4116 hold up pretty well compared to others that use those same steels..they seem to do a good job on their heat treats to get the max performance out of a steel.
      One of these days I'm going to need to thin out my collection too. It's kind of stupid to have 75 knives or more that never see any pocket time, and just sit in my chest of drawers collecting dust. I have both budget brand knives as well as higher end TI frame locks with exotic steels, but there are only around 10 that I carry regularly. Kind of stupid when you really think about it. I just find it a major pia to sell them. I've given away far more than I've ever sold 😂 🤣

    Wait do people not know that aus 10a is a decent steel? Cedric & Ada put it slightly better than 154cm as far as edge retention in his tests. I haven't heard anything bad about it. Heck, even CS's aus 8a is good stuff. CS has consistently good heat treats which is going to be more important than the specific steel type anyways. I can understand people maybe not liking the feel of the handle material since that's subjective, but complaining about the blade steel here is weird.

    Great review, nothing wrong with Aus-8. Most manufacturers who use Aus-8 thin their blades to much. Ontario Rat, also uses Aus-8. great lil knife but blades to thin and the liner lock sucks. Also, one thing I like to see in reviews is real life cutting. I have hard use knives but never would I chop into lumber/timber, that's were machetes,hatchets, and axes come into play. Right tool for the right job kinda thing. Butcher something with the test knife, bone and sinew and even meat can dull a knife too. Different types of cardboard, ropes,cordage(dry and wet). But yes the 4-Max Scout is a beast of a knife. Nice thick blade, easy to sharpen, Triad lock, diffently made for hard use.

      I got GSM Engage. I'm not as paranoid as I was after getting word of the sale. I didn't think of panic buying then. I'm thinking the 4 Max elite because of S35VN and G-10. I been watching videos on 4 Max. I like a big knife. Strange but I just took out Engage to get at some car signal bulbs in clear plastic and it seemed too big for the job, but it wasn't an issue of long, wide blade, just being careful not to cut towards myself or have fingers in the way. 4 Max is beefy, large and tough, still sharp. LTC always wanted Cold Steel to be the sharpest, toughest knives. I wonder how many cheapie "Wonder knives" he easily demolished and ruined. I've seen him at parking lot event and Blade West 2022 in SLC, UT, but he's not the approachable type and doesn't need to be to do what he does, but it would be fun to ask him about his knife experiences before Cold Steel was started up. Like what was his first knife and his favorite knife as a teen.

      @@Jimislash Here's the earliest example I can find of Cold Steel marketing AUS-10: www.bladeforums.com/threads/aus10a.1563342/
      I had thought the regular use of AUS-10 went way further back but I guess the first production catalog reference was in the 1999 Cold Steel catalog: sales.coldsteel.com/cs_images/1999catalog.pdf
      (See the Triple Action)
      "WHATISAUS 10A? Cold Steel’s commitment to producing the finest cutlery in the world starts with procuring the finest materials. Five years ago we discovered AUS 10A, a high carbon stainless made in Japan. We tested AUS 10A, along with every other Japanese-made stainless suitable for knifemaking. Some steels showed promise, but weaknesses became apparent when we flexed them in a vise and began cutting rope. The only equal to our AUS 8A in strength and toughness was AUS 10A; however, the big breakthrough was that it exceeded AUS 8A by an honest 20% in edge holding ability, giving it a wide performance advantage over ATS-34, ATS-55 and 440V."
      The marketing claim of an edge holding performance advantage over 440V (S90V in modern nomenclature) is obvious BS, but to say it was the best Stainless coming out of Japan in the 80's-90's probably isn't an exaggeration (I still can't find a reference to its actual origin, most of the best steel used in the 90's was just developed in the nebulous "Post War" era).
      Anyway, for decades AUS-10 was only used by Cold Steel on their absolute best products and I remember for years and years being highly envious of anything made in AUS-10, that we're getting it in the 4Max now makes me flat out giddy.
      I have to use a lot of personal restraint to avoid going and buying one example of everything they're making in AUS-10 right now.
